In Eastern Europe this refined technique continues today, so much so that it is still being taught in art schools. Even if miniature painting is more or less confined to monastic centers, there are a few artists who modernize it by producing original works. One of these is Atanas Alexander Atanassov, a brilliant Bulgarian painter to whom Lo Scarabeo has entrusted the difficult task of reproducing what is definitely the most famous deck of miniature cards: the Visconti-Sforza Tarot. Today, the originals are partially housed at the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York, partially at the Accademia Carrara in Bergamo, and partially in the private collection of the Colleoni family of Bergamo. This work was realized shortly after 1450 by an unknown Lombard artist, perhaps connected with the school of Francesco Zavattari, on behalf of the new Lord of Milan Francesco Sforza (†1466) who had recently risen to power following his marriage to Bianca Maria Visconti, natural daughter of Duke Filippo Maria (†1447). Unfortunately the deck divided between Bergamo and New York is incomplete, lacking four cards: the Devil, Tower, 3 of Swords, and the Knight of Pentacles. The film focuses on how these traditions are dealing with the rapid changes in local economy and the homogenizing effect globalization has on local culture. Filmed by an Italian American rediscovering his family's roots, the film takes the viewer on an odyssey through remote regions in Sicily, Calabria, Campania and Molise introducing the people who carry on these ancient traditions that most Italian Americans are completely unaware of. Italian Bagpipes - Surdulina & Zampogna A small clip from the International Bagpipe Festival in Strakonice, August 2006. The ensemble is called "Calamus", it hales from Calabria. The zampogna is the traditional bagpipe of southern Italy. It has 3-5 sounding pipes with double reeds, two of the pipes are chanters, the rest drones. A common tuning is f#'-g'-a'-h'-c''-d'' for the right chanter, gah-c'-d' for the right and d' for the drone (additional drones can be in d, d'' or g). The surdulina (first instrument on the video) is a smaller form of the zampogna (surdu means "deaf" in Calabrian) with single beating reeds. The tuning is ie f'-g'-a'-b'c' for the right chanter, d'-e'-f'-g' for the left one (the end is closed) and c'/c'' for the drones.
