CACO - Oral History Project - Trailer Oregon and Southwest Washington is home to as many as 10000 Cambodian-Americans. Many lived through the horrors of the Khmer Rouge and came here as refugees in the early 1980s. A large number of people in the Cambodian-American community are still plagued by nightmares and post-traumatic stress, yet between wariness of Western doctors and mental health stigmas, many are reluctant to seek treatment. Cambodian-American communities see high rates of diabetes, stroke, drug addiction, alcoholism and family violence. In 2008, Northwest Health Foundation funded the Cambodian-American Community of Oregon and southwest Washington to develop an oral history documentary project that trains Cambodian-American youths to interview their own parents and grandparents about their experiences under the Khmer Rouge. The interviews were compiled into the documentary previewed here. This effort is a strong example of a Foundation's Kaiser Permanente Community Fund project, which seeks to address the various social determinants of health. We have already heard that the oral history project has helped Cambodian-American youth better understand their families, and has given Khmer Rouge survivors some catharsis so the community can begin to mend. UX Week 2010 | Adam Mosseri | Data Informed, Not Data Driven At Facebook, ***ytics play a critical role in informing design decisions, but internally there's a wariness of the idea of design by numbers. In this talk we'll hear about three primary ways Facebook uses quantitative data: • Optimizing small but important interactions • Finding pain points in existing work flows • Setting high level success metrics for large projects Some things are difficult, or maybe even impossible, to quantify. Currently, the design team works to optimize for both the user and the network, and though these two are not mutually exclusive they are not always perfectly inline. We'll hear Facebook's take on how they think they should improve their ability to quantify some of the less tangible data points, like brand perception and long term network value. Those ***ytics can begin to perform as counter metrics so that they can begin to rely less heavily on instinct, which is important but sometimes fallible.

Harbor Seal Growing Up Fast The Harbor Seal Pup PAWS Wildlife Center has been caring for is gaining weight and growing up fast! You may remember this pup came to PAWS after a well-intentioned, but unknowing, couple of vacationers took him into their hotel room in Westport, WA, believing him to be abandoned by his mother. In the first part of this clip, the seal pup is eyeing us curiously, but cautiously. He has maintained a healthy wariness of humans, an important instinct for his future survival in the wild. The red tag on his tail is part of a Department of Fish and Wildlife tracking program that monitors the health of marine mammal populations. He has a healthy appetite, and has learned to hunt for live fish (as seen in the last part of the video clip). My initial Reflect is actually for two reasons: first of all, I generally can't be sure of either physical or special Toxicroak, because the guy is pretty neat in that he can aptly perform either (Swords Dance and Nasty Plot definitely help even more with that), but given the deployment I went with, I figured that a boost to Sp. Defense wouldn't come in nearly as handy in a pinch. The second reason is because Toxicroak is just one of those monsters that I see a lot of Sucker Punch from...and trust me, if you run with a team like this one under your belt, you start to get a bit wary and gun shy of things like that, especially from other monsters that are otherwise too slow to do you harm before you take them out...or so you'd think. Froslass on the other hand, is really, REALLY not too good of a choice on my part...because she has no moves that would fail to trigger a Sucker Punch. In a moment of insanity, I thought "hey, I can score a one-hit KO" and ignored all the wariness that I put on with Rotom.
