  • Often we can t tell for sure if a photo is a self portrait unless the photographer tells us so A number of factors contribute to the illusion that someone else might have taken the shot First of all some part of our mind assumes a person can t be in two places at the same time both behind and in front of the camera even though another part of our mind the part that is familiar with photography knows better The illusion is magnified when people place the camera on a surface or tripod to take a shot of themselves from a distance The further away the camera the less likely the viewer will assume that subject is the photographer If people have their eyes closed or are not looking at the camera it might appear as if they don t know they are being photographed which also leads the viewer to assume someone else took the shot A subject looking outside the frame of the image towards someone or something suggests a presence external to the image that distracts the viewer s attention from the subject s presence as the creator of the image Even looking into the camera can suggest the illusion of someone else being the photographer because the mind more easily accepts the reality of someone taking a shot of someone else rather than the counterintuitive situation of a people looking at themselves taking a picture of themselves These kinds of self portraits create the illusion of objectivity as if pretending playfully or quite deliberately this is how someone else captured me If we assume photographers were not posing for their own shots we might attribute more authenticity impartiality or spontaneity to such depictions of their personality which might be the photographer s intentions By creating the illusion of someone else s presence the objective self portrait also suggests a relationship between the photographer and that imaginary person who took the shot Consciously or unconsciously the photographer might be referring to and posing for someone in particular But who is that person and wh

  • Question 29 of 365: Why is location pretending to be content? Location is the new content. Or, so would nearly every viral iPhone and web app I have seen recently have you believe. From becoming mayor of Café Macchiato, to allowing everyone to know where you are in Google Latitude, or even just checking in at any of the different locations found on Gowalla; Location has become so important to the fabric of the mobile web that it has found a way to become content. It has started showing up in status messages and blog posts. It has created its own platforms for sharing. Location has become so content heavy that pictures and live streaming of your location is easy for anyone who cares to share the information. It has become an automatic part of every day life for thousands if not hundreds of thousands of users. So, why do I say "pretending" if so many people find this information engaging enough to want to "check in" multiple times an hour as they bar hop? I believe that location in and of itself is useful, even playful, but it is not a substitute for discussion, creation or collaboration. Location is now being used as a means to simultaneously advertise to you and through your own posts about places you go, advertise through you. Every time you check in at a Starbucks, you are advertising that you are there, and every time that you are near a Starbucks, you can become a target for an online coupon. This cycle doesn't exactly sound like you are able to ask the right questions. On Twitter, you are able to ping specific people about what ...
  • 2003-1 Tab Manor for the Criminally Insane (Halloween) Part 1 of 2 - Every October each department in my company dresses up their area for Halloween and competes against the other departments. In 2003 my department created an insane asylum among the cubicles. We won "Best of Show" for that year. The video quality is poor because I took it with my still digital camera's video feature (and their was very low light levels). The storyline: A nurse greets each group of "new patients" as they are checked into the asylum. They are given a quick tour of the facilities before being shown to their rooms. The first area after entering the building is the security area. The security guard could monitor all activities via video cameras. Being shown on the monitor are scenes of Dr. Tab's Surgery and, voyeuristically, the security guard often watches the nurses as well. Working in an insane asylum has it's drawbacks and unfortunately the guard on duty has cut off his own head with a butcher's knife. In the next area the tour sees many of the inmates/patients in a waiting room area, hitting each other, playing games or watching TV (which only has snowy static on it). Weird music is heard making the new patients feel uneasy. Some patients just rock back and forth, one quietly sits in a corner petting hit pet rat. The new patients follow the nurse through a door and into a long black hallway only to pass through another door to find themselves in Dr. Tab's surgery. He is currently operating on a patient. You can see the patient's belly has ...
  • Bluecoat Sixth Form Leaver's 2006 Video - The Last Song 2 music videos back to back of Coventry Bluecoat School sixth formers graduating Summer 2006. 1) Last Summer - Lostprophets 2) The Last Song - All American Rejects Shot mostly spontaneously/voyeuristically on MiniDV on aSony HandyCam and quickly edited on iMovie in April 2006, with ancient footage from year 11 shot on a basic bog-standard Samsung Hi-8 Camcorder transferred to MiniDV by simply filming a television screen! I originally intended it to be a single music vid, but realised I couldn't effectively get enough of the students into one video, so the footage spilt out into two. Unsurprisingly, "The Last Song" is the most important one, but I think the first holds its own. Not sure how interesting it would be to someone wasn't in the Sixth Form though. Rough around the edges but gets the sentiment across I think... Thanks to all involved, especially those I nicked stills from!

  • DEFICIT at AFI FEST 2007 presented by Audi DIR: Gael Garcia Bernal SCR: Kyzza Terrazas PROD: Pablo Cruz, Gael García Bernal, Diego Luna, Luciana Kaplan DP: Eugenio Polgovsky ED: Alex Rodríguez PROD DES: Mily Moreno CAST: Luz Cipriota, Tenoch Huerta Mejía, Camila Sodi, Gael García Bernal, Ana Serradilla Actor Gael García Bernal's directing debut is infused with an infectious, youthful energy, voyeuristically following his complex characters at a house party just outside of Mexico City. Bourgeois, rich kid Cristobal (García Bernal) is having his friends over for a barbecue at his parents' weekend home. His younger sister (Camila Sodi) and her hippie, pill-popping friends are also staying at the house, and the clash between the two groups of friends, brother and sister, and their childhood friend who works for the family is just the beginning of the story. Bernal uses subtle undercurrents of tension to seamlessly interlace characters, time and place. Both comic and reflective, DEFICIT is an elegant allegory for current Mexico on the brink of change. Shot in an immediate, improvisational style that emphasizes the class chasms, Bernal elicits layered performances from his young cast, proving himself to be a gifted director as well as a charismatic actor.
  • Following Piece 2008 Based stupidly on Chuck Baudelaire's concept of the "Flaneur", Jean Baudrillard's ideas of "simulacra," and after Vito Acconci's "Following Piece (1969)," Following Piece (2008) is not quite a re-enactment, but a reinterpretation imported into the Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas virtual dystopia. Supplemental: Following Piece is one of Acconci's early works. The underlying idea was to select a person from the passers-by who were by chance walking by and to follow the person until he or she disappeared into a private place where Acconci could not enter. (In this case the character "CJ" follows the person until either himself or the subject is killed by the inherent danger and violence of the world). The act of following could last a few minutes, if the person then got into a car, or four or five hours, if the person went to a cinema or restaurant. Acconci carried out this performance everyday for a month. And he typed up an account of each 'pursuit', sending it each time to a different member of the art community. Two experiences here were crucial. During the act of following, Acconci submitted his subjective will to the movements of the person followed. And he thus penetrated a private sphere even though he moved in the public domain. Acconci demonstrated that the urban public space is defined by the random encounters between people that take place within it. At the same time, he presents us the city street as a space where civil protection potentially breaks down. This ...

  • Sund@y Seoul (Film from South Korea) Minimalist in style, Sund@y Seoul is inspired by the bizarre stories that came to light during the circulation of a tabloid magazine—Sunday Seoul—that was published in Korea until it ceased to be run in the 1980s. In typical tabloid fashion, the film voyeuristically peeks into the darkest corners of peoples lives. For example, a middle-aged college professor whose wife has recently died makes a desperate attempt to find an ex-student with whom he had a secret affair. A shy high school student finds himself falling in love with a call girl who is having an affair with a married policeman she met when she was caught in a sting operation. And a lonely housewife seeks more from life by befriending a free-spirited though unpopular woman at the community swimming pool. Sund@y Seoul also contemplates the negative aspects of the Internet and the way in which it stymies meaningful human connection.

TravelPod is a company of TripAdvisor™. Lyse_e's travel blog entry: "The sound of traffic outside my window today was the first reminder I'd had in a while that I was in a city, and a capital city at that. I arrived on Friday afternoon and over the weekend Vientiane has been positively sleepy. Walking around the streets I felt as though everyone had left town and forgotten to tell the 'Falang' left behind. There are, however, other tell tale signs you are now in Laos' major city - including traffic lights, which, whilst ignored by the majority, are only to be found here. As are ATM machines. In the couple of weeks I've been here I've clearly forgotten how to use these as I've managed to loose my cash machine card (I think I left it in behind - and yes I've had it stopped). There's also quite a lot of construction (particularly road works) going on, with about 4 men digging holes and another 10 watching. Hopefully they'll fill in the open man holes (3ft square) soon too, as walking around whilst reading a map is a bit perilous. Being an NHS manager I'm obviously interested in health services overseas and have always peered a little voyeuristically into hospitals as I've passed them, curious to know what is inside. A tour would be nice, or perhaps chatting to a local doctor, but I didn't particularly want my experience of the ...

  • A Quiet Week in the House by Jan Švankmajer A Quiet week in the House (Tichý týden v dome) is a 1969 Czechoslovak live-action/animated short film by Jan Švankmajer. A man (apparently a secret agent or terrorist of some sort) embarks on an unspecified mission to infiltrate an old, decaying, abandoned house that rests in a lonely Czech countryside. Making sure not to be spotted by others, the protagonist spends six days inside the house, where he quietly and voyeuristically witnesses a series of bizarre events enacted by various living, antiquated objects (eg furniture, meat, and clay) that dwell within the rooms of the house. On Monday, a box full of candies reveal themselves to be rusty nails and screws before placing themselves on the keys of a typewriter; On Tuesday, a cow tongue licks a drawer full of dishes clean before climbing into a meat grinder and being made into tiny scrolls; On Wednesday, a clockwork toy chicken breaks free of its tether and reaches a plate full of corn kernels only to be buried under a pile brown clay; On Thursday, a desk releases the pigeons that were trapped in its drawer only for them to be plucked by an unseen force, after which a chair tries to use the pigeons' feathers to fly only to crash and shatter on the floor. On Friday, a hose emerges from the buttonhole of a suit jacket and drinks all the water from a flower vase, causing the flowers in the vase to combust, and then urinates the water onto the floor; On Friday, a pair of dentures bind a cabinet full of pigs' feet with tough ...

It's a modern interpretation of the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet played out in an on-line chatroom entitled Computer Love (a euphemism for Cyber-*** and a reference to the Kraftwerk song). Exaggerated ***age feelings are expressed in urban movement as the two would-be lovers perform to the words of the abridged scene, in contrast to the limitations of the clipped and abbreviated modern language of instant messaging. The audience are invited to voyeuristically spy upon their hidden private world and actions via webcam - privy to the reality of their thought processes and feelings before they reveal them on-line. So a nice place that she could settle into and name residence would be a giant --even "crucial" help to her at this time. Juliet arrives at a building that appears higher inside than out.
