Rehan Mashwani Masjid Haram Al-Masjid al-Haram ("The Holy Mosque"; also known as al-Haram Mosque, Haram al-Sharif, Masjid al-Sharif and the Haram) in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, is the holiest mosque in the world and the primary destination of the Hajj pilgrimage. The mosque complex covers an area of 356800 square meters and can accommodate up to 820000 worshippers during the Hajj. The Holy Mosque is the only mosque that has no qibla direction, since Muslims pray facing the Ka'ba in the central courtyard. The Haram was built in the 7th century and has been modified, rebuilt, and expanded on a regular basis ever since. Major expansions took place in the 1980s and further work is going on today. The beginnings of the Holy Mosque were established under Caliph Omar Ibn al-Khattab (634-644). The caliph ordered the demolition of houses surrounding the Ka'ba in order to accommodate the growing number of pilgrims, then built a 1.5-meter high wall to form an outdoor prayer area around the shrine. During the reign of Caliph Uthman Ibn Affan (644-656), the prayer area was enlarged and covered with a simple roof supported by wooden columns and arches. In 692, after Caliph Abdul Malik bin Marwan conquered Mecca from Ibn Zubayr, the building was enlarged and embellished: the outer walls were raised, the ceiling was covered with teak and the capitals were painted in gold. Ferentino (Fr) : A walk through history Ferentino is a town and comune in Italy, in the province of Frosinone, Lazio, 65 km southeast of Rome. The Cathedral of Ferentino.It is situated on a hill 400 m above sea-level, in the Monti Ernici area. Ferentinum was a town of the Hernici; it was captured from them by the Romans in 364 BC and took no part in the rising of 306 BC. The inhabitants became Roman citizens after 195 BC, and the place later became a municipium. It lay just above the Via Latina and, being a strong place, served for the detention of hostages. From 1198 to 1557 it was the seat of the Papal rectorate of Campagna and Marittima province. After World War II Ferentino experienced a strong industrial growth. Ferentino still possesses considerable remains of ancient fortifications. The lower portion of the outer walls, which probably did not stand free, is built of roughly hewn blocks of a limestone which naturally splits into horizontal layers; above this in places is walling of rectangular blocks of tuff. Two gates, the Porta Maggiore, a double gate constructed entirely of rectangular blocks of tuff, and the Porta Sanguinaria (with an arch with tuff voussoirs), are preserved. Outside this gate is the testament of Aulus Quinctilius Priscus inscribed in the rock. The highest part of the town, the acropolis, is fortified also; it has massive retaining walls similar to those of the lower town. Inscope Arch ..."Beautiful ornamental pink granite surrounds the gray granite that borders the half-oval opening of the archway, 13 feet 7 inches across at the base and 12 feet high in the middle. The archway is Tuscan, that is to say, the top of the voussoirs makes an ogival pattern and the bottom a round one. Encompassing the whole above is a cornice in a segmental arc. Inscope's underpass is 34 feet in length. It has a 100-foot-long railing on top. It was not easy to construct. Olmsted estimated the cost at $50000, considerably higher than similar construction during the Civil War days. The site was once a swamp. Although water had been drained off to form the Pond, quicksand lay below. Piles were required, and a subflooring of timber was needed to strengthen the rubble schist foundation. It supported a common-brick barrel vault, originally lined with wood sheathing. Under the 1973 Central Park Master Plan for restoration of the southeast area of the park, masonry pointing, stone cleaning, painting the brick-vault archway a reflective white, and repair of lights inside the archway were completed. Restoring the wood sheathing to the bricklined walls was deemed too impractical in view of prevalent vandalism. Inscope Arch is important because it illustrates the continuing creativity of Vaux even after all the designs of the 1850s and 1860s. Aulnay de Saintonge The church of Aulnay de Saintonge lies south of Poitiers in south western France and is one of the best examples of the Aquitainian style of romanesque. It stands on the Via Turonensis pilgrimage road which passed via the city of Tours on the way to Santiago de Compostela. It is celebrated for the richness of its sculptural progamme which dates from about 1140. The south porch features a succession of concentric arches which display an Apocalyptic theme.
