  • Orchestre Poly Rythmo De Cotonou - Mi Homlan Dadale Benin lies on the West coast of Africa and butts up against Nigeria in the south, Niger in the east, and equally tiny Togo to the north. What distinguishes Benin from its neighbours is the fact that it happens to be home to Vodoun - or as we know it over here Voodoo. So it should be no surprise that the popular music of Benin draws heavily upon the rhythms of Vodoun rituals, but what is surprising is the other influences that have come into play. The Vodoun Effect: Funk & Sato From Benin's Obscure Labels 1973-1975 a recent release on the ***og Africa from Germany, that has collected together four*** tracks by one of Benin's most popular bands, Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou. Recorded in the 1970s on a variety of small independent labels, they show not only the Vodoun influence but how music from both South and North America found its way back across the Atlantic Ocean. According to the publicity material that came with the disc, in the late 19th century a group of freed slaves from Brazil returned to Benin and over the years their dances and songs were incorporated into Beninese ritual, and from there worked their way into the popular culture. In the 1960s and 1970s American soul and funk music started making its presence felt in Africa, and along with the sounds of pop music from neighbouring Nigeria were assimilated into the popular music scene in Benin.
  • Understanding Voodoo ~ Vodun Vodun or Vudun (spirit in the Fon and Ewe languages, pronounced [vodṹ] with a nasal high-tone u; also spelled Vodon, Vodoun, Voudou, Voodoo etc.) is a traditional organized religion of coastal West Africa from Nigeria to Ghana. Vodun is practiced by the Ewe, Kabye, Mina and Fon peoples of southeastern Ghana, southern and central Togo, southern and central Benin. Another source states: Voodoo is the Louisia version (and slightly different) of the Haitian religion, Voodoun. In Haiti, Voodoun evolved from traditional West African (today Nigeria, Ivory Coast and Cameroon, mostly) {entities}, a mix of them brought by the {enslaved} who were 'Christianized' force-ably. As the {enslaved} were Christianized, they called their tribal {entities} "Saints," but kept a lot of the traditional ways of worship the same. (At night, and in secret) Haiti was the first nation to be run by former {enslaved} , as they revolted successfully, and ran their former Masters out of the nation. The US was very afraid of this happening in it's own South, so all communication was cut off between Haiti and the US. This is why Louisiana Voodoo and Haitian Voodoun are so much different today. (They were out-of-communication for a century or so) General background: Vodun (aka Vodoun, Voudou, Voodoo, Sevi Lwa) is commonly called Voodoo (vû'dû) by the public. The name was derived from the god Vodun of the West African Yoruba people who lived in 18th and 19th century Dahomey. Its roots may go back 6000 years ...

  • Antoine Dougbe & Poly - Rythmo : Towe Nin Thanks a lot : Oro & Jam Magica . Antoine Dougbe & Poly - Rythmo : This record is very special and rare. I like it especially because Bylledey Guissey sings on all tracks (we can also hear the particular style of his chorus) exept the exceptional "Towe Nin" sung by the big Miguelito who has been already presented on Oro. The orchestra is the powerful Poly-Rythmo and compositions from Antoine Dougbe. Dougbe was not singing or playing modern instrument. He composed and Clément Melome, the leader, made the arrangements. He was initiated into Vodoun religion, that may be why he was not allowed to sing. Singing is sacred when your are a Vodoun priest... This master piece album was recorded in 1977 on Satel.

  • A sketch of a vodoun/voodoo Veve. softwareprocess.es This software I have created tracks what you draw (based on webcam input, I also used a white board with some dry erase markers). Your drawing is stored as a temporal bitmap which is then traversed temporally. This traversal produces a path and that path is coverted into music. Usually it acts like a sequencer. A jagged path will have lots of sub paths where as a smooth path will not, thus a jagged path will sound staccato, while a smooth path will have a long duration. The different angles in a path determine if it is a path vertex or not. Little lines and dots get turned into short flute bursts or drums, while longer lines and larger objects become long duration flute tones. To learn more about Veve's go here: To learn more about Vodou or Voodoo go here: The idea is originally from Matthew Skala who has considerable multicultural expertise in these sorts of things: ansuz.sooke.bc.ca Here's the software if you want it, it is very Linux specific. It might work on other unices but I doubt it. You'll need csound: Before I offend anyone, I'm not drawing veves, it is just that idea of a drawing producing an effect which is how it relates to veves. This is a first stab and the UI is pretty bad. Also it is hard to tell what is happening because it is pretty abstract. I read from the webcam, this is the color display, my program, written in OCaml, reads this bitmap, then equalizes and thresholds the ...
