  • ELGAR: Sursum Corda, played on Vocalion reed organ Sir Edward Elgar (1857-1934) composed this piece in 1894 as an Élévation for strings, brass, organ and tympani, for the visitation of the Duke of York (later King George V) at Worcester Cathedral. In Roman Catholic parlance, the French word Élévation indicates the moment of trans-substantiation during the consecration of the communion bread and wine. When the score was published in 1901 as Elgar's Opus 11, the title was subtly changed to the Latin Sursum Corda (Lift up your hearts, the opening statement of the Christian communion rite), probably in hopes of gaining a broader audience in England's largely Protestant population. The work was dedicated to Elgar's friend H. Dyke Acland of Malvern, and later appeared as a piano solo. This arrangement for harmonium, by Paul Hassenstein, was published in Germany in 1924. Performed by Michael Hendron on a two-manual-and-pedal Vocalion reed organ, built by the Mason & Risch firm of Worcester, Massachusetts in 1889. This instrument (case style 17 with a façade of decorative "pipes") was restored by Jim Tyler, in whose San Francisco home this recording was made 30 January 2010.
