  • Dr Strangelove Trololol Jack D Ripper is a dick. Dr Strangelove or how I learned to stop worrying and love the bomb. Parody. Song is Trololol or "Indeed, I am very glad that I finally am returning home" by Eduard Khil/Edward Hill In 2009, a 1976 video of Khil singing a non-lexical vocable version of the song I Am Glad, Cause I'm Finally Returning Back Home (Я очень рад, ведь я, наконец, возвращаюсь домой) was uploaded to YouTube,[10] and quickly became an Internet meme[1] known as "Trololololololololololo" or "Trololo",[11] giving Khil the nickname "Mr. Trololo" or "Trololo Man".[11] The song itself was written by Arkady Ostrovsky, and was also performed by Valery Obodzinsky,[12][13] Hungarian singer János Koós[14] and by Muslim Magomayev on the Little Blue Light program in the Soviet Union.[15] The name "Trololo" is an onomatopoeia of the distinctive way Khil vocalizes throughout the song. Meaning and the original text of the song The Trololo song originally had words and was an ordinary song. The song itself was a narrative about a cowboy riding a horse to his farm[16][17][18]: I'm riding the prairie on my stallion, a mustang as such, and my sweetheart Mary now knits a stocking for me, a thousand miles away from here. Hidden quote in the original language (Russian) [show] Я скачу по прерии на своем жеребце, мустанге таком-то, а моя любимая Мэри за тысячу миль отсюда вяжет для меня чулок But the Soviet Artistic Council censored almost all of the song text due to its unsoviet nature. • Ratcliffe Highway [200-202] (155-157) Masterpiece Theatre??? No, it's just a bawdy sea ballad-- the lyrics to the "main" version of the chantey "Blow the Man Down" (ie "As I was a walkin' down Paradise Street...") can be traced to this song; we can call it a forebitter, though Hugill was informed that it had been used as an actual chantey for capstan or pumps. Note that it is the "story" of the solo verses/lyrics, and not the chorus or melody that it gives to Blow the Man Down (the latter aspects seem to have come from an African-American source). The song is very much of the British Isles type, more Irish than anything. The vocable "tu re lye" chorus is telltale. "Highway" is rhymed with "see," suggesting that the latter must be said in an Irish accent in order to make rhyme! Hugill notes, "Many of these Western Ocean songs and shanties were sung in an Irish accent," by which he means you fake the accent for certain songs. (I am not doing that here, at least not very much.) Ratcliffe Highway was a vice area of London; in Blow the Man down it become the Liverpool equivalent, Paradise Street. Hugill omits verses 6 and 7 without trying to disguise them. I had to reconstruct these verses from other sources, mainly the "Cruisin' Round Yarmouth" of Ewan MacColl and "Chinatown Bumboat" of Salty Dick. Also found in: Doerflinger 1951 Please check out the whole chanteys project playlist, at

  • Banyawarra F mago: pretty painterly perfection This mago has a lovely feminine aesthetic... the yellow background, the dainty 'flower' design (which actually represents Flying Fox droppings!). It takes a woman to create something as beautiful as this. This is a no-mucking around mago, something I reckon David Blanasi would have been proud of and would have enjoyed playing. At the end of this clip, Blanasi's protege Darryl Digarrnga looks down at the mago and coments on the instrument and its G***bingu pedigree, and says with a chuckle "maybe for my grandfa eh?". That brought a smile to my face... The artwork on this mago is as fine as Banyawarra has painted and among her best for iDIDJ Australia. Again, it features the design of Warrnyu, an important totemic being associated with a sacred cave, a sacred freshwater stream (drinking from it gives you grey hairs), and topographical features on G***bingu estate. This is an F mago with a sweet sweet voice, very well balanced with great vocal hums and exquisite "mo" tongue retractions with the "di-da-mor" vocable.

  • Poor Paddy Works on the Railway (pp 252-253) This is the sailor version (for capstan or pumps) of the well-known Irish-American song, said to have begun as a popular music hall song, but popular in the oral tradition among railroad workers and sailors alike. This is one of those little rewarding gems in Hugill's text, in that it gives us an idea of what an older version of a song may have been like --not necessarily the "original" and surely not more "correct" than other versions, yet there is something more realistic to it, I think. There are two common versions of the song that I am familiar with. One, perhaps learned by many from Pete Seeger, is in a minor key and has the vocable chorus of "fil-i-me-oo-ree-oo-ri-ay." This chorus would work nicely in a chantey, but it is not part of Hugill's version. Stuart Frank, renowed scholar of sea music, recorded a version of "Paddy Works..." aboard ship at Mystic Seaport, and it is this minor key melody with vocable chorus, only with more sailor-like lyrics than the usual folkie version. It is very effective. [Here's an example of that variety: ] The second version that goes around is after the Clancy Brothers, the Dubliners, etc. It is in a major key. What is odd about this is the shiftes between different tempos for different verses, and lots of rubato and pauses. In my opinion, while nice, it is a bit jazzed up--a side poduct of making staged entertainment presentation of an "Irish music band." In any case, not likely for a functional chantey. The present ...
