In vetoing A-10, the Governor stated that he would not repeat the failed, irresponsible and unsustainable fiscal policies of the past by raising taxes on the highest taxed people in the nation. Further, the Governor pointed to New Jerseys poor economic condition and cited the negative impact an additional tax increase would have on the States economic recovery and job creation efforts. The veto of A-10 rejects the adoption of the 116th tax increase on New Jerseyans in the last 8 years. In vetoing A-20, the Governor cited concerns about the bills constitutionality, action already taken by his administration to restore funding for the PAAD and Senior Gold programs, as well as the imprudence of restoring additional spending commitments in the current fiscal and economic climate.

The FLDS case, where Texas took over 400 children based on the umbrella of beliefs held by their parents and no tangible evidence of abuse or neglect, demonstrated the sweeping power that the government wields against families, even when reports are false. If SB 1440 is not vetoed, Child Protective Services will be able to gain access to peoples homes and children by merely presenting an affidavit to the court asking for a court order to aid in an investigation. Iraq's parliament recently passed a long delayed election law, but now, Tariq al-Hashimi, Iraq's vice-president, has vetoed the bill. Al-Hashimi said he did not reject the bill as a whole, but there is one part that he considers unconstitutional. According to the new election law, Iraqis in exile would account for only 5 per cent of the seats in parliament, even though several million Iraqis live abroad. Most of them are thought to be Sunnis, so this provision could reduce the weight of Sunni Arabs in the upcoming election. Many Iraqis living in Syria or Jordan appreciate the move, but al-Hashimi faces harsh criticism from Nouri al-Maliki, the prime minister, and from the US government.
