Power Supply Filter or Extension Cord? Power Supply Filter or Extension Cord?Voltage drops and high-frequency interferences have become typical features of Russian power supply networks. For connecting all kinds of equipment the majority of people use power supply filters or regular extension cords. But let's look at the difference between a power supply filter and a regular extension cord. A power supply filter is designed to protect the devices connected through it against pulse and high-frequency interferences. Most of regular power supply filters consist of two simple components - a varistor and an LC-filter. Varistor is a semiconductor resistor. It is connected in parallel to the protected equipment. That means that the same voltage as that for the protected device is supplied to the varistor. If a high voltage pulse occurs in the power line then the varistor's resistance drops abruptly. Being connected in parallel it transforms the pulse's electric energy into heat energy. By doing so it protects the devices connected to the power supply filter. HistoryThe history of variable resistors as devices designed to protect electrical circuits dates back to the early 70-s of the last century. It was then, when James Tramwell patented a device for deflection of an electrical discharge by the actuating medium, that is a plate made of zinc oxide. While a simple discharger can protect cables operating under the voltage of up to 300 Volt and lower, operation with higher voltages, like 480 Volts and above, ordinarily requires a variable resistor combined with a discharger in order to ensure due protection of the power system. In case of such structure, if excessive voltage is applied to the power line, the voltage discharge causes disruption in the variable resistor and its element acquires conductive properties. And a relatively large current pulse, usually 500000 amperes, moves into the ground through the earthing. After that the voltage returns back to normal. However, at such voltage, due to the non-linear resistance of the variable resistor, the allowable current is limited by the physical dimensions of the case. This means that the risk of damage to the component, which would not however cause failure of the entire operating circuit, remains. At the same time the current limited by a variable resistor protects the circuit from holes. As of today, powerful variable resistors are required elements in protection of electrical circuits.
