  • What is Klippel Trenaunay Syndrome? Go to: Together We Can Solve the Puzzle KT Foundation PO Box 205 Lakeview, NC 28350 What is KT? Klippel-Trenaunay Syndrome is a rare, congenital, vascular disorder affecting one or more limbs. Klippel-Trenaunay Syndrome was first noted in a 1900 publication of Archives Generales de Medecine. In the article, Du Naevis Variquex, Osteo-Hypertrophique, French physicians Klippel and Trenaunay described a clinical syndrome with three major symptoms (Gloviczki, 1982). These main symptoms are often referred to as the "triad." The triad consists of hemangiomas, bone and soft tissue hypertrophy, and vein varicosities. Hemangiomas are often apparent at birth, or by two weeks of age (Samuel, 1995). The hemangioma, or nevus, is usually confined to a part of the limb. In other cases, the entire limb is affected by the hemangioma (Samuel, 1995). Capillary hemangiomas are the most common type and are called port wine stains due to the red and purple color (Letts, 1977). Bone and soft tissue hypertrophy is a result of increased growth around an organ. In many cases, limb length is affected and t he length of the limb is different than the normal limb. The soft tissue hypertrophy is symmetrical around the affected extremity. In most cases, the girth of the limb is larger, although atrophy is common in some patients. Varicose veins are often v ery noticeable in Klippel-Trenaunay Syndrome patients. Varicose veins result from damaged or defective valves in a vein. A vein ...

  • Varicose Veins ; Simplified What are Varicose Veins ? Varicose veins are veins that have become dilated, enlarged and tortuous. The term commonly refers to the veins on the leg, although varicose veins can occur elsewhere. In the legs, there are basically two systems of veins: one under the skin -- Superficial; and the other - Deep Venous System. Blood flow in the veins is always towards the heart as against that in the arteries wherein it is away from the heart. In the legs blood flow in all positions -- standing , walking ..and lying down is towards the heart. It is from the foot upwards. This is due to the action of the calf muscles and the vein valves . These valves prevent blood from flowing backwards (retrograde). In certain situations, the valves are damaged. Raised pressure classically during pregnancy in the females , infections, and prolonged standing like in policemen, teachers,.. amongst others. In such a situation, the blood flow in the veins becomes retrograde -- from above downwards. The veins under the skin then become dilated. With dilation, the valves are made even more non-compliant and subsquently all the valves in the superficial vein may allow reversal of flow. When veins become varicose, the leaflets of the valves no longer meet properly, and the valves do not work. This allows blood to flow backwards and they enlarge even more. The classical picture of varicose veins then develops. What are the symptoms of Varicose Veins ? • Aching, heavy legs (often worse at night and after ...
  • Varicose Vein Procedures Are Simple Procedures Watch full video at and learn more about varicose vein procedures. Vein Disease: Vein problems all involve issues of Valves, Pipes and Gravity: Five systems of veins (greater and small saphenous, anterior and posterior accessory, and the vein of Giacomini) drain the surface of each leg. Each vein system is like an upside-down tree, ie each has a main trunk, branches, and twigs. There are one way valves throughout each of these vein systems. Valves: When the leg muscles contract, the venous blood is pushed upwards, toward the heart. When the leg muscles relax, the force of gravity causes the venous blood to fall backward, toward the feet. The vein valves prevent the blood from flowing backward, down the leg. Venous Hypertension: If the valves in the main trunk have failed, ie are 'incompetent', the whole vein system below is now under increased pressure, holding up the weight of the column of blood all the way to the heart instead of just to the next valve. The vessels below dilate and, under increased pressure, leak. Varicosities (Hidden and Visible): The branches from the trunk dilate under pressure resulting from failed valves above. These branches become varicose veins (dilated and twisting). 90% of varicose veins are inside the leg and not visible from the surface. Patients can have terrible varicose viens and pain, yet have nothing visible on the surface of the legs to indicate a problem. These veins cause aching, tiredness and heaviness ...

  • Varicose Vein Procedures & Failed Valves in Veins See more at and learn about varicose vein procedures. Why suffer, varicose vein procedures are simple and very effective. The Cause of Vein Problems: Failed Valves in Veins Vein disease is truly one of the simplest problems in medicine and can be treated with simple laser procedures. It is mechanical, involving only vessels and valves, with no complicated biochemical issues. Vein disease 'in a nutshell': Imagine the five major veins that drain the surface of each leg as being upside-down 'trees'. These veins have valves about every six inches. When leg muscles contract, the valves in the 'trunk' of this 'tree' allow blood to flow one way - upward - toward the heart. When the leg muscles relax, these valves act as platforms, preventing backward flow and holding up the weight of the column of blood. If the valves fail, the 'branches' and 'twigs' below must hold up the weight of a column of blood all the way up to the heart. With this increased pressure from failed valves, the 'branches' of this upside down 'tree' of veins distend and become painful varicosities both on the surface of the leg and inside the leg causing pain, cramping, restless, 'tired' legs. Also, with this increased pressure, surface capillaries, the 'twigs' of our upside-down 'tree', distend and become spider veins. Increased pressure also causes fluid with protein and blood cells to leak from deeper capillaries, causing swelling and skin changes. Failed valves in the veins ...
