  • International Student Safety - Think Before "Hi, my name is George. I am an international student in Australia. Australia's a great place but it is different from home. I am always learning new things and meeting lots of interesting people. I have to look after myself for the first time in my life. One thing I have learnt is, you need to be aware of your new environment. Pay attention to your surroundings and most important think before you travel. Look after yourself and stay safe." George is one of the 650000 international students in Australia, many of whom are not accustomed to the danger signs in our urbanised society, and some have been inadvertently placing themselves in high-risk situations. As the face of Australia's first digital campaign addressing student safety, George aims to spread the word about student safety to other international students or future students through media channels most likely to reach this audience. Stakeholders from a wide variety of Australian agencies including police, government, education and industry have contributed both funds and in-kind services to support Think Before. Important safety tips can be found at the campaign's website. International students are urged to think before they travel late at night, specifically around how to avoid high risk situations that could leave them vulnerable. The campaign is being rolled out across multiple platforms and social media sites are a key feature, including Facebook, Twitter and international social media sites in 13 country ...

  • TEDxKrakow-Paul Mankiewicz-Integrating Ecosystems with Urban and Industrial Landscapes Ecology is the story material cycles, powered by energy flow. The invention of 'waste' overlayed one-dimensional material flows on nature's cycle of production and return. Full cost accounting and biomimicry both argued for a return to material cycling. Urbanised and industrialised landscapes provide an essential testing ground for a new 'circular logic' -- a community ecology in the service oflife. • Zurich - Switzerland Zürich is the largest city in Switzerland and the capital of the canton of Zürich. It is located in central Switzerland at the northwestern tip of Lake Zürich. While the municipality itself has 380500 inhabitants, the Zürich metropolitan area is an urbanised area of international importance constituted by a population of nearly 2 million inhabitants. Zürich is a mixed hub for railways, roads, and air traffic. Both Zürich Airport and railway station are the largest and busiest in the country. Permanently settled for around 7000 years, the history of Zürich goes back to its founding by the Romans, who, in 15 BC, called it Turicum. During the Middle Ages Zürich gained the independent and privileged status of imperial immediacy and, in 1519, was the place of origin and center of the Protestant Reformation in German-speaking Switzerland, led by Ulrich Zwingli. Zürich is a leading global city and among the world's largest financial centres. The city is home to a large number of financial institutions and banking giants. Also, most of the research and development centers are concentrated in Zürich and the low rate of tax attracts overseas companies to set up their headquarters there. According to several surveys from 2006 to 2008, Zürich was named the city with the best quality of life in the world as well as the wealthiest city in Europe. In addition to being Switzerland's main commercial centre, Zürich is sometimes called the Cultural Capital of Switzerland. An impressive ...
  • Iban Tribes Warriors of Sarawak, Malaysia by For Bookings: For More Video: The Ibans are a branch of the Dayak peoples of Borneo. In Malaysia, most Ibans are located in Sarawak, a small portion in Sabah and some in west Malaysia. They were formerly known during the colonial period by the British as Sea Dayaks. Ibans were renowned for practising headhunting and tribal/territorial expansion. In ancient times the Ibans were a strong and successful warring tribe in Borneo. They speak the Iban language. Today, the days of headhunting and piracy are long gone and in has come the modern era of globalization and technology for the Ibans. The Iban population is concentrated in Sarawak, Brunei, and in the West Kalimantan region of Indonesia. They live in longhouses called rumah panjai or rumah panjang [1]. Most of the Iban longhouses are equipped with modern facilities such as electricity and water supply and other facilities such as (tar sealed) roads, telephone lines and the internet. Younger Ibans are mostly found in urban areas and visit their hometowns during the holidays. The Ibans today are becoming increasingly urbanised while (surprisingly) retaining most of their traditional heritage and culture The origin of the name Iban is a mystery, although many theories exist. During the British colonial era, the Ibans were called Sea Dayaks. Some believe that the word Iban was an ancient original Iban word for people or man. The modern-day Iban word for people or man is mensia, a ...

An island country made up of 63 islands, it is separated from Malaysia by the Straits of Johor to its north and from Indonesia's Riau Islands by the Singapore Strait to its south. The country is highly urbanised with very little primary rainforest remaining, although more land is being created for development through land reclamation. Singapore had been a part of various local empires since it was first inhabited in the 2nd century AD. It hosted a trading post of the East India Company in 1819 with permission from the Sultanate of Johor. The British obtained sovereignty over the island in 1824 and Singapore became one of the British Straits Settlements in 1826. Occupied by the Japanese in World War II, Singapore declared independence, uniting with other former British territories to form Malaysia in 1963, although it was separated from Malaysia two years later. Since then it has had a massive increase in wealth, and is one of the Four Asian Tigers. Singapore is the world's fourth leading financial centre, and its port is one of the five busiest ports in the world. The economy depends heavily on exports and refining imported goods, especially in manufacturing, which constituted 26 ...

  • Holland 1995 Holland's prominence in the United Provinces and Dutch Republic In 1432 Holland became part of the Burgundian Netherlands and since 1477 of the Habsburg Seven*** Provinces. In the 16th century the region became more densely urbanised, with the majority of the population living in cities. Within the Burgundian Netherlands, Holland was the dominant province in the north; the political influence of Holland largely determined the extent of Burgundian dominion in that area. Comitatus Hollandiae (1682)In the Dutch Rebellion against the Habsburgs during the Eighty Years' War, the naval forces of the rebels, the Watergeuzen, established their first permanent base in 1572 in the town of Brill. In this way, Holland, now a sovereign state in a larger Dutch confederation, became the centre of the rebellion. It became the the cultural, political and economic centre of the United Provinces in the 17th century Dutch Golden Age, the wealthiest nation in the world. After the the King of Spain was deposed as the count of Holland, the executive and legislative power rested with the States of Holland, which was led by a political figure who held the office of Grand Pensionary. • THREE WEEKS TOURING VICTORIA STATE BENDIGO BALLARAT SOVEREIGN HILL MELBOURNE Victoria is a state located in the south-eastern corner of Australia. It is the smallest mainland state in area but the most densely populated and urbanised. Victoria began in the 1830s as a farming community. The discovery of gold in 1851 transformed it into a leading industrial and commercial centre. Victoria is the second most populous Australian state, after New South Wales, with an estimated population of 5037700 as at September 2005. Melbourne is Victoria's capital and largest city, with more than 70% of all Victorians living there. n 1851 gold was discovered near Ballarat, and subsequently at Bendigo. Later discoveries occurred at many sites across Victoria. This triggered one of the largest gold rushes the world has ever seen. The colony grew rapidly in both population and economic power. In ten years the population of Victoria, Australia increased seven-fold from 76000 to 540000. All sorts of gold records were produced including the "richest shallow alluvial goldfield in the world" and the largest gold nugget. Victoria produced in the decade 1851-1860 20 million ounces of gold, one third of the world's output. DON PUGH

The commercial has a captioned title, The Forgotten Land. In narration over illustrative footage, followed by Gough Whitlam speaking to camera, ALP election policy is presented in relation to services to rural Australia and development of the interior of the continent. A five-minute political television commercial would be unheard of in today's election campaigns -- more commonly characterised by the eight-second grab. This three-minute excerpt demonstrates the policy detail that could be incorporated into party television advertising. The ad focuses on issues relating to rural Australia -- urban drift of population, drought, and the delivery of health and education services to rural communities. It also raises concerns about neglect of the country's mineral and oil resources, and the predominantly overseas ownership of existing resource development. For most of the century, the proportion of the country's population living in rural areas had been declining, and by the 1966 election it had reached roughly 14 per cent -- rendering Australia among the most urbanised nations in the world. Nevertheless activities in the interior of the continent continued to play a central role in the shaping and reshaping of Australia's economy, its landscape, environment, history and, importantly, its ethos. In the ad, Whitlam talks about improvements to rural ...
  • URBANISATION IN CHINA; happiness is seen everywhere - TRAILER URBANISATION IN CHINA happiness is seen everywhere In China new cities and neighbourhoods emerge faster than ever before. The inhabitants, often relocated from small villages or demolished areas in the city centres, find a new social context in the new cities. The apartments are big and clean, but do they feel at home in the high-rises? Meanwhile the 'new rich' can buy a nice house in a themed suburb. But the city centres of Thames Town or Holland Village are empty. These areas are used mainly by newlyweds searching the perfect surrounding for their wedding pictures. The people of the new urbanised china tell their stories.

  • Brass Classics: English Brass perform Die Fledermaus Johann Strauss was born in Vienna. He soon proved himself to be a compelling violinist and at the age of 19 found work in the band of Joseph Lanner. Ballroom dancing in Vienna was on the ascendant during those years and the teamwork of Lanner and Strauss rode the crest of the wave. Between them, they popularised the waltz (waltzer = to revolve or spin), an urbanised and sophisticated version of Austrian country dances such as the Ländler and the Schnadahüpfl. In a few years Strauss had more than 200 musicians on his books, racing nightly from one ball to another to impose his remarkable personality on the music and to take the credit. In 1832 Richard Wagner would write: 'I shall never forget the extraordinary playing of Johann Strauss, who put equal enthusiasm into everything he played and very often made the audience frantic with delight.' At the height of his fame, a year before his death, Strauss conducted the music for 125 balls in the two months of the Vienna Carnival. His reputation rested in the end on the amazing discipline and sensuality of his performances, even more than on his composition of hundreds of waltzes, polkas, galops, quadrilles and marches. In 1825 Johann Strauss had a son, also Johann, whose composing talents were to become even better known. Along with his younger brother Josef, Johann the son learned everything musical from his father: We boys paid close attention to every note, we familiarised ourselves with his style and then played what we had ...

  • Netherlands - Amsterdam - Clubs The geography of the Netherlands is unusual in that much of its land has been reclaimed from the sea and is below sea level, protected by dikes. Another factor that has influenced its physical appearance is that the country is among the most densely populated on earth. It is ranked 15th overall on that scale, but is behind only three countries having a population over 10 million. Unsurprisingly, the Netherlands is highly urbanised.
  • De - Urbanised Man - 2030 In twenty years the daily rituals of the urban man won't have changed much. He will still have to dress himself, feed himself and wash himself each morning. The urban aesthetic is harder to predict. The ambiguity surrounding the future of our cities is both exciting and chilling. In this tale, our subject goes about his morning routine in a seemingly familiar manner to the one we all know today. But when he steps outside, dressed for work and ready to go, the land around him is barren, ambiguous, uncertain and muted. The subject acts out this practice each day, repeatedly unprepared for the environment he steps out into; a man of habit, unable to embrace a world that is crumbling around him. He is troubled with the sand in his shoes and the uneven terrain, but each day, leaves in clean shoes and a pressed shirt. Why does the fastidious man continue? Futile tradition, reliance on routine, a nostalgia for the past? Perhaps a melancholic view of the future forces him to cling to the past? Perhaps this condition already exists?
  • Food Connect Visits Mamre Farm Food Connect Sydney organized a visit to Mamre Farm in beautiful New South Wales. Food Connect Sydney wants to challenge conventional, profit-driven food supply systems! We plan to become the thought leaders in the fresh food market, providing consumers with food with integrity. We will challenge people to think about where their food comes from what food quality means to them and the impacts of chemical farming on their health and that of the farmers and the natural environment. We want consumers to re-evaluate the way they go about purchasing their fresh food, where their fresh food has come from and their lack of interactivity with their food. We want to excite Sydney society with the opportunities to take positive action that will help improve social outcomes for our urbanised and rural communities
  • The Despised Ainu People - Japan October 1994 - An insightful report on racial discrimination in Japan. A small boy denies his Ainu ancestry for fear of being bullied in a society where conformity is valued above all else. The Ainu people of the northern island of Hokkaido are despised by the rest of Japan. Different in appearance and language they have suffered more than a century of discrimination. They are denied their traditional fishing rights, their sacred sites are being destroyed and tourists come to gawk at their culture in museums. Now, the Ainu are fighting back. They have at last won a seat in the Japanese parliament and many are re-learning the Ainu tongue. The Ainu are struggling to preserve their unique heritage in the face of an urbanised and uncaring modern Japan.
  • How a seperate receiving antenna helps HF reception A demonstration of how a seperate receiving antenna can help HF radio reception, particularly in urbanised areas where noise is a problem. A large outdoor antenna is best for transmitting but for receiving a small loop can often pick up less noise and allow clearer reception. This is a demonstration of the difference an indoor loop antenna can make when listening to a ZL station in a contest on 160 metres.

The risks are particularly severe in some regions of Australia, such as the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland, the Macquarie Marshes in New South Wales. The Department of Climate Change said in its Climate Change Impacts and Costs fact sheet: '. . . ecologically rich sites, such as the Great Barrier Reef, Queensland Wet Tropics, Kakadu Wetlands, Australian Alpine areas, south-western Australia and sub- Antarctic islands are all at risk, with significant loss of biodiversity projected to occur by 2020'. It also said: 'Very conservatively, 90 Australian animal species have so far bee identified at risk from climate change, including mammals, insects, birds, reptiles, fish and amphibians from all parts of Australia.'
