  • San Francisco earthquake and fire, April 18, 1906 SUMMARY This film shows the aftermath of the San Francisco earthquake of April 18, 1906, and the devastation resulting from the subsequent three-day fire. The 8.3 magnitude earthquake struck at 5:12am and was centered along the San Andreas Fault, which slices through coastal California. Most of the cities of central California were badly damaged. San Francisco, with thousands of unreinforced brick buildings - and thousands more closely-spaced wooden Victorian dwellings - was poorly prepared for a major fire. Collapsed buildings, broken chimneys, and a shortage of water due to broken mains led to several large fires that soon coalesced into a city-wide holocaust. The fire swept over nearly a quarter of the city, including the entire downtown area. Dynamite was used with varying success to prevent the fire from spreading westward. Over 3000 people are now estimated to have died as a result of the disaster. For the surviving refugees, the first few weeks were hard; as aid poured in from around the country, thousands slept in tents in city parks, and all citizens were asked to do their cooking in the street. A severe shortage of public transportation made a taxicab out of anything on wheels. Numerous businesses relocated teporarily in Oakland and many refugees found lodgings outside the city. This existing and currently unoccupied 3-story, unreinforced masonry structure was damaged by fire in November of 2002, and is subject to the city's seismic strengthening requirements prior to re-occupancy.   • Canterbury Earthquake: brick vs reinforced concrete I took this earlier today, of what used to be the old Para Rubber building in the Christchurch CBD being demolished. This is a very graphic (if somewhat boring) demonstration of how vastly much stronger steel reinforced concrete is than unreinforced brick (4 bricks wide for that side wall). It was interesting to see this, other Cantabrians might find this reassuring! It was getting dark and raining harder so I left these guys to it. And no they can't get a bigger digger! They are all being used. There were some monsters a couple of blocks away digging up the road (possibly for an existing job unrelated to the earthquake) with buckets wider than my car. And no, Christchurch isn't "completely devastated" at all. The media (and me) only point their cameras at the interesting sights, like this. In reality you can drive around for ages and not see a thing out of the ordinary, apart from the odd toppled chimney or brick wall. (Not saying it was a small earthquake or to diminish the massive costs and losses some people are facing.)

  • President Jefferson Davis Monument - Fairview, Kentucky The one and only president of the CSA was born in a log cabin in what is today Fairview, Kentucky on the site of this monument on June 3, 1808. His family moved to Mississippi during his infancy. Davis went on to become a West Point graduate, Mexican War hero, Mississippi congressman and senator, and Secretary of War during the Franklin Pierce administration. Davis was a reluctant secessionist but was ignagurated president of the new CSA on February 18, 1861. In 1907, General Simon Bolivar Buckner, a famous Confederate general from Kentucky, proposed that a monument be built to honor Jefferson Davis at the site of his birthplace. In 1917, construction of the worlds tallest concrete obelisk began. After a halt during World War I, the obelisk was finally completed in 1924. Repairs of more than $3mm was spent to repair the elevator, install a backup generator and make the monument handicapped accessible - this was completed in 2004. At 351 feet tall, it is the largest [unreinforced] concrete obelisk in the world, and the fifth tallest monument in the United States. The walls are seven feet thick at the base, two feet thick at the top. The monument features an elevator to an observation room which is closed during the Winter.

While "Plan A" and "Plan C" stalled after repeatedly veering off course, officials said Friday that the "Plan B" drill was nearing the miners at a point 2047 feet (624 meters) below the surface. Mining Minister Laurence Golborne estimated the drill would break through by midday Saturday. Chileans have been captivated by the rescue drama, coming to see it as a test of the nation's character and pride. Knowing that the actual rescue is now just days away also has eased some of the miners' families' anxiety. But now comes a difficult judgment call: The rescue team must decide whether it is more risky to pull the miners through un-reinforced rock, or to insert tons of heavy steel pipe into the curved shaft to protect the miners on their way up.   • San Francisco Earthquake And Fire - April 18, 1906 Library of Congress Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division This film shows the aftermath of the San Francisco earthquake of April 18, 1906, and the devastation resulting from the subsequent three-day fire. The 8.3 magnitude earthquake struck at 5:12am and was centered along the San Andreas Fault, which slices through coastal California. Most of the cities of central California were badly damaged. San Francisco, with thousands of unreinforced brick buildings - and thousands more closely-spaced wooden Victorian dwellings - was poorly prepared for a major fire. Collapsed buildings, broken chimneys, and a shortage of water due to broken mains led to several large fires that soon coalesced into a city-wide holocaust. The fire swept over nearly a quarter of the city, including the entire downtown area. Dynamite was used with varying success to prevent the fire from spreading westward. Over 3000 people are now estimated to have died as a result of the disaster. For the surviving refugees, the first few weeks were hard; as aid poured in from around the country, thousands slept in tents in city parks, and all citizens were asked to do their cooking in the street. A severe shortage of public transportation made a taxicab out of anything on wheels. Numerous businesses relocated teporarily in Oakland and many refugees found lodgings outside the city.   • Installing New Septic Tank Here is the installation of our new septic tank and the demolition of our old septic tank. The old 800 gal concrete tank was still pretty solid in some places but was worn through in other places. 20+ years ago when we first moved here we had some problems so the seller replaced the inlet tee and outlet and some pipe and covered up it all up. Before this was done I saw holes worn through in the side of the tank where we had dug around it trying to find the problem. I never knew if they patched these holes or not but I have spent the last 20 years worrying that the whole tank would collapse and someone would fall in or the house would be condemned or some other disaster would happen. Now we have a nice new 1000 gal. tank and I can move on to worrying about something else like the termites and the plumbing and unreinforced masonry wall in the family room which will probably collapse on my head someday and....
