  • Claude Debussy (1862-1918): "D'un cahier d'esquisses" The composer Claude Debussy needs little introduction. As a pianist, he was noted for his avoidance of the crisp, dry and articulated style which typified French pianism of the nine***th century. His style of playing was simple, highly tone-conscious and completely uncluttered by over-expressive angst. The recording is a piano roll recording made by Debussy for Welte in 1913 (just three years after the work was composed). The piano rolls for Welte are amongst the most accurate we have, conveying the original performed dynamics, attack and pedalling rather faithfully, and when a good roll is played on a properly conditioned piano, the problems of dubious rhythmic bumpiness which infect many roll playbacks can vanish. This rendition seems as fine as we could hope for.
  • Part 8/9 - UFO Documentary - Out Of The Blue Out of the Blue - The Definitive Investigation of the UFO Phenomenon Out of the Blue, which first aired on the Sci-Fi Channel, is an excellent, sound, and sober documentary that ends up being as much about the cover-up as the UFO phenomenon itself, which is only to be expected since the two cannot be separated until the dark veil of truth is finally torn asunder. While you can't even begin to examine more than a few of the most compelling UFO cases in such a short amount of time, the video does offer a good overview of the history of UFO activity and highlights a select number of important sightings and events from various parts of the world. A vast array of experts (scientists, astronauts, cosmonauts, physicists, pilots, military officers, government officials) are consulted, and many competent witnesses describe what they saw or experienced. Roswell, Rendlesham Forest, the 1976 Iranian air force encounter, and the more recent Phoenix Lights are all mentioned, but the scientific rigor of the presentation precludes any mention of more sensational topics such as alien abduction. Among the most significant (but less famous) events touched upon are Gordon Cooper's filming of a craft landing and taking off from a California military base in 1955 (the film disappeared after it got to DC), footage of a Trident missile being blown apart by laser-beam-like weapons from a UFO, and the disabling of 10-20 nuclear missiles in Montana missile silos by a UFO which hovered over the base ...

  • Colleen Saidman & Rodney Yee "Fearless" Two of the nations most popular yoga teachers, Colleen Saidman Yee and Rodney Yee, return to Omega to offer an exquisite blend of a masculine and a feminine interpretation of yoga for all levels of yoga practitioners. Masculine energy is typified as being more gross, while feminine energy is typified as more subtle. In this workshop, we move from vinyasa (linking movement with breath) to integrated alignment; from chanting to silence; from pranayama (breath exercises) to pratyahara (withdrawal of the senses toward the self); and from philosophy to meditation, creating a profound experience of movement from the gross to the subtle. This expertly-guided practice enables us to refine our attention and begin to dissolve the illusion of the boundary between male and female and between us and the world. As a result, we move in the direction of joyful, selfless service in all of our relationships, beginning with our relationship to self.

  • California Ramblers.....Magnolia...1927 A lot is already known about the California Ramblers and their many records.A great band, never dull.In 6 months Rollini,Bobby Davis (the distinct tone alto sax) and Red Nichols influenced Chelsea Quealey would set sail for London and the Savoy hotel, thus marking the zenith of the bands quality. The band, though good, did perhaps suffer from a slightly loose rhythm section, but on this record the rhythm tightens up and propels the band along, giving the record a hard driving sound.Their manager Ed Kirkby had a pleasant voice and takes the vocals here.Coleman Hawkins who played bass sax on a number of Fletcher Henderson records in the mid 1920s,before stopping on that instrument, was asked in retirement, why he had stopped playing the bass sax.He replied because he had heard Adrian Rollini play the instrument. No greater compliment be paid to Rollini than that. The band had many off shoots, and my favourite is the Little Ramblers who played more solos and had, perhaps, a bit more edge to the music. Whilst 1920s music in Britain is typified by the Savoy Bands. In America it is not Whiteman or Ted Lewis or Abe Lyman, but the California Ramblers, with their jaunty music, that best typify the sound of the 1920s America

  • Joni Mitchell - California September 3, 1970 Watch the full show: While some of Mitchell's most popular songs were written on piano, almost every song she composed on the guitar uses an open, or non-standard, tuning; she has written songs in some 50 different tunings, which she has referred to as "Joni's weird chords." The use of alternative tunings allows more varied and complex harmonies to be produced on the guitar, without the need for difficult chord shapes. Indeed, many of Joni's guitar songs use very simple chord shapes, but her use of alternative tunings and a highly rhythmic picking/strumming style creates a rich and unique guitar sound. Her right-hand picking/strumming technique has evolved over the years from an initially intricate picking style, typified by the guitar songs on her first album, to a looser and more rhythmic style, sometimes incorporating percussive "slaps", that have been featured on later albums. In 1995, Mitchell's friend Fred Walecki, proprietor of Westwood Music in Los Angeles, developed a solution to alleviate her continuing frustration with using multiple alternate tunings in live settings. Walecki designed a Stratocaster-style guitar to function with the Roland VG-8 (Virtual Guitar), a system capable of configuring her numerous tunings electronically. While the guitar itself remained in standard tuning, the VG-8 encoded the pickup signals into digital signals which were then translated into the altered tunings. This ...

  • Presidents Hu and Obama Answer Questions on US-China Relationship (Part 2) President Obama and Chinese President Hu Jintao emphasized areas of cooperation in a joint news conference at the White House Wednesday. President Obama noted China's help in enforcing sanctions on Iran, reducing tensions on the Korean peninsula and continuing to explore clean energy. Obama also typified part of the relationship as one based on 'friendly competition' which 'spurs both countries to innovate.' The two countries continue to differ on issues concerning human rights, the undervalued Chinese currency and creating a level playing field for economic competition in China. President Hu Jintao echoed Obama's emphasis on cooperation saying that 'China and the US share expanding common interests and responsibilities.' But he also indicated areas in which his government is not willing to compromise, namely issues of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and path to development.

  • The Rolling Stones - Lady Jane The Rolling Stones are a prominent English rock band formed in April 1962 by guitarist and harmonica player Brian Jones, pianist Ian Stewart, vocalist Mick Jagger and guitarist Keith Richards. Bassist Bill Wyman and drummer Charlie Watts completed the early lineup. Rhythm and blues cover songs dominated The Rolling Stones' early material; they are credited for raising the international regard for the earlier styles of blues typified by Chess Records' artists such as Muddy Waters who wrote "Rollin' Stone", the song after which the band is named. Unconcerned with being seen as authentic blues stylists, from the start the Rolling Stones have played rock and roll, and have written and recorded in many genres. Jones led the band until Jagger and Richards teamed to write hit songs for the band while assuming band leadership. By 1969 Jones' contributions were minimal, and he was unable to tour the United States for legal reasons. By mutual agreement he left the band. Weeks later Jones drowned, while Mick Taylor had already joined the Rolling Stones on guitar. Taylor left in 1974 and was replaced by Ronnie Wood. Wyman left in 1990, and his replacement Darryl Jones became the primary bassist, but he has not been made a full member. Stewart was taken from the official lineup in 1963 to continue as the band's road manager and occasional keyboardist until his death in 1985. Chuck Leavell is the current primary keyboardist for the band. After gaining popularity in Europe, The Rolling ...

With Satomi Kobayashi, Mikako Ichikawa, Ryo Kase. Megane revisits the pet motifs of hospitality and food set forth in Ogigami's debut feature Kamome Diner (screening on March 12 and 14). In Megane, Taeko, a middle-aged school teacher from the city, arrives at a small, obscure seaside inn in the south of Japan, where she discovers that the quaint residents of this unreal place—including the eccentric innkeeper Yuji—have the surprising ability to create an odd sense of individuated community. Composed in picturesque, planar shots that unfold like a scroll painting, Megane is a wry, subtle, and revealing continuation of the modern comedy of vacations and resorts typified by Jacques Tati's Monsieur Hulot films; a gentle piece of whimsy that suggests Beckett, if Beckett depicted paradises instead of purgatories. In Japanese; English subtitles. 106 min. • Part 7/9 - UFO Documentary - Out Of The Blue Out of the Blue - The Definitive Investigation of the UFO Phenomenon Out of the Blue, which first aired on the Sci-Fi Channel, is an excellent, sound, and sober documentary that ends up being as much about the cover-up as the UFO phenomenon itself, which is only to be expected since the two cannot be separated until the dark veil of truth is finally torn asunder.
