  • The Drachenfels Railway, Königswinter, Germany - 29th January 2012 The Drachenfels ("Dragon's Rock") is a mountain 321 metres (1053 ft) in the Siebengebirge mountain range between Königswinter and Bad Honnef in Germany. The ruined castle atop the mountain, built between 1138 and 1167 by Archbishop Arnold I of Cologne bears the same name and was originally intended for the protection of Cologne to the south. Originally it consisted of a bergfried with court, chapel and living quarters for servants. The castle was slighted in 1634, during the Thirty Years' War, by the protestant Swedes and never rebuilt. As a strategic asset it had outlived its usefulness. Erosion due to the continued quarrying undermined much of the remains and only a small part is left today. The rock, like the rest of the Siebengebirge, is formed by the remnants of a volcano and has been the site of a trachyte quarry since Roman times, which, amongst others delivered the building material for the Cologne Cathedral. Of all the mountains in the Siebengebirge, it's closest to the river Rhine, which facilitates easy transport by barges, thus making it an excellent place for a quarry. This ended in 1836, when the Prussian government bought the quarry. In 1922 the first protection measures were put in place and in 1956 the site was declared a national park. A neogothic castle, lower on the mountain, is named Schloss Drachenburg and was built in 1882 by Baron Stephan von Sarter. Both the top and Schloss Drachenburg can be reached by the Drachenfelsbahn, a rack railway built in ...

  • Bryan Adrian in PERGAMON video 5 of 12 bryan adrian in pergamon. part 5 of 12. Bryan Adrian descends The Hellenistic Theater with a seating capacity of 10000. This had/has the steepest seating of any known theater in the ancient world. THE ACROPOLIS. The theatre terrace overlooks the plain of the river Kaikos, a beautiful vista. The Hellenistic theatre at Pergamum (Pergamon) is the centerpiece of the acropolis of the ancient city, which is located just north of the modern-day town of Bergama on Turkey's northern Aegean coast. The first theatre on the site was built in the earliest days of the Attalid Kingdom (late 3rd century BC). Fragments of polygonal masonry from the retaining wall (***emmata) of the theatre remain, but ruins such as the stone tower above and behind the theatron are of Byzantine origin. The theatre whose ruins we see today was built during the reign of Eumenes II (197-159). Eumenes used the acropolis of Athens as inspiration and expanded the city accordingly, building such landmarks at the famous Pergamene Library and the Altar of Zeus. The theatre was renovated and enlarged as part of Eumenes' overall plan for the acropolis of his city. The theatron is sited against the steep acropolis incline preserving the building space at the top for the municipal buildings of Pergamon. The theatre at Pergamum has seventy-eight rows of seats and is divided into three horizontal seating sections. Two horizontal walkways (diazomata) separate upper and lower sections of theatron seating. Radiating ...

Here is the MINEFILE info for the #7 The No. 7 mine is on the claim of the same name (Lot 623), on a ridge crest at the elevation of 1370 metres, 3.3 kilometres east of the confluence of McCarren and Gidon creeks, 7.5 kilometres southeast of Greenwood. Access to the property is 2.4 kilometres travelling southerly and up hill by winding dirt road from the McCarren Creek road. The Lexington (082ESE041) and City of Paris (082ESE042) lie 2.5 kilometres to the southeast. The intermittent operations of the No. 7 mine from 1901 to 1945 produced a total of 13748 tonnes of ore yielding 92.4 kilograms of gold, 3110 kilograms of silver, 97 tonnes of lead, and 6.2 tonnes of zinc. The potential of No. 7 was recognized early in the Greenwood camp and the claim was Crown granted in 1895 to J. Schofield. By 1897, a 40-metre deep inclined shaft was developed on the claim to service 60 metres of underground drifting. At the approximate time of final closing of the mine 50 years later, in 1945, the mine workings comprised a 100-metre inclined shaft, adit levels at 12 and 90 metres, and intermediate levels at 30 and 55 metres. Old mine maps show that the underground work on these four levels totals about 1580 metres. The 90-metre adit level is open from portal to face, a distance of about 580 metres, but the other ...

The island is linked to Mazzorbo by a bridge. The current population of Burano is about 4000.
