TONAL PLEXUS - TPX6s Live Control 1 The new TPX6s ($3109) from H-Pi Instruments has a matrix-style interface for controlling global synthesizer parameters, and a joystick option for controlling global pitch bend. This is a demonstration of those features, although I forgot to demonstrate one of the parameter sets, and the wide variety of settings options is not really shown here in this one example modification of an organ patch. TONAL PLEXUS - part 3 This is a short improvisation played on the H-Pi Tonal Plexus TPX4s 844 key microtonal keyboard synthesizer www.h- The sound used is from the internal synth and is the piano patch with a modified envelope and EQ (on-board controls allow ADSR and EQ modification). I used the audio LINE OUT from the keyboard this time, so it should sound cleaner than the first 2 videos. The material here revolves around extended harmonics up to the 13-Limit on Bb, F, #+Eb, and #+Ab. There is some editing to remove most of the musically weak moments, but it's far from perfect. Alesis Andromeda Tonal Synthesis This instructional video explores tonal synthesis using the amazing Alesis Andromeda ***ogue synthesizer. We can investigate tonal applications for sound synthesis and with some background theory, understand how to create organ and similar keyboard timbres. ***ogue synthesis can create choral and organ-type timbres that can be layered to bring about very rich and dynamic undulating sounds. These sounds can form the basis of very expressive regal compositions that can lend themselves to a wide variety of musical applications. Experiment with tonal synthesis.

Here I mess around a bit with some themes on 5 tone equal temperament, or 5-edo/5-ET, a temperament reasonably dissonant with harmonic timbres but extremely (dare I say?) pretty with timbres of modified partials. For example, if there was a progression that started in F major but then became D minor, I can't seem to make the shift be very dramatic, or in any way distinct. What would you suggest for improvising over relative tonality shifts? - Theodore, Greece. A: Tonality shifts can be difficult because although the progression changes, the key signature stays the same and this requires you (as an improviser) to warp your treatment of the musical context. It's a little bit like playing a solo over the same riff with an entirely different treatment of phrasing to pull out the sounds of major and minor. By using blocks of arpeggios and using the appropriate pentatonic you can pull out the color change when the tonality shifts. Chakra Tonality In the tanric tradition the chakras are often depicted as lotuses with a variable number of petals. The most commonly refered to series is 4-6-10-12-16-96-972, but it is important to realize that history has seen many different systems. and that the written sources to the concepts are much later than most spiritually orientated people tend to believe. Nothing explicit is written about chakras neither in the vedas nor the Bhagavad Ghita nor the Yoga Sutras. The concept became well established during the time of mughal rule of India, which many of the aesthetically appealing diagrams derive from. What is necesarry is reflections about the cultural context of chakras, also mathematically, instead of understanding their structure as something absolute, an authoritative revelation. The above mentioned number sequence curiously belongs to the basic ***agesimal calculation system, which thrived in Mesopotamia thousands of years BC. It is based on the prime numbers 2, 3 and 5 which from a musical perspective through the harmonic series are equivalent with octave, perfect fiffth and just major third respectivly (NB! in the written order!). In these ancient cultures music, arithmetics, geometry and astronomy were evidently parts of a holistic approach which all in all may seem less speculative than modern new age imaginations.
