  • The new generation CT "Aquilion ONE" : DigInfo DigInfo - movie.diginfo.tv Toshiba Medical Systems exhibited the next generation of CT diagnostic imaging equipment, the Aquilion ONE, at the 2008 International Technical Exhibition of Medical Imaging (ITEM Expo). The Aquilion ONE is the world's first diagnostic imaging system that can scan an entire organ, such as the brain and heart, in one rotation, because it has a scan width of up to 160mm using 320 rows of area detector elements. Entire organs can be dynamically diagnosed using the Aquilion ONE system because it displays visual representations of volume data in a time series. In addition, because the new CT system is also easier on patients due to its lower radiation exposure and its drastic reduction in scanning time, it can be potentially used in emergency examinations and on young children.   • Optical Projection Tomography - Wellcome Image Awards 2011 (HD) Watch this video to hear Dr James Sharpe explain what optical projection tomography is and how it works. Optical projection tomography (OPT) is a relatively new imaging technique, developed in 2002 with the aim of accurately imaging the development of 3D structures. It works by projecting light through a whole specimen. The specimen is prepared in an organic clearing agent to assist light penetration and is mounted on a revolving stage. The light passes through the sample and is captured by a detector, producing a 'quantative shadow'. The denser the tissue, the less light that penetrates and so the shadow created is darker. A series of these 'shadow projections' are captured at different angles as the sample revolves, so that information is generated through 360 degrees. All the images are reconstructed using computer software to create an accurate 3D image of the whole sample. This technique is useful for tracking gene expression using visible light as well as fluorescence methods and has the added benefit that larger samples can be imaged than is normally possible on standard confocal microscopes.
