- Charles Moore -- The Legacy of Margaret Thatcher One of Britain's most distinguished journalists, Charles Moore is a former editor of the Daily Telegraph and Sunday Telegraph newspapers and of the Spectator magazine. Moore is also the authorized biographer of the Right Honorable Baroness Thatcher of Kesteven, better known as Margaret Thatcher. By 1979 Britain had lost its empire, become a power of the second rank, seen its living standards fall below those of Germany, France and Italy, and seemed adrift. In stepped the "Iron Lady." Reviewing video clips that illustrate key moments in her career, Moore explains how Margaret Thatcher, with breathtaking self-possession, identified what was wrong in Great Britain and what needed to be done to correct it -- epitomized by her breaking the strike of the National Union of Mineworkers. Moore delves into the intangible qualities of confidence and toughness that gave her the courage to stand side by side with Ronald Reagan in confronting the Soviets in the Cold War. Finally, in summarizing her career, he asserts that Margaret Thatcher "had the courage of her convictions, and her convictions were proved right by the course of history."

- IRA Tries to Assassinate Margaret Thatcher and her Ministers at Hotel in Brighton IRA Tries to Assassinate Margaret Thatcher and her Ministers at Hotel in Brighton. On 12th October 1984 at 2.54am, the Irish Republican Army tried to assassinate Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and the entire British Cabinet. A bomb was placed inside the Grand Hotel in Brighton, Sus***, England where most leading members of the Conservative party were staying. It was the most devastating terrorist attack ever to have been launched on British politicians. The bomb failed to kill any of the ministers, however, five people were killed and 34 were injured in the attack. Thatcher was still awake at the time of the bomb and it left her bathroom badly damaged where she had been just two minutes earlier. IRA member Patrick Magee had checked in to the hotel nearly a month before the conference and during his stay he planted the bomb under the bath in his room. The room was being used by Sir Donald Maclean and his wife when the bomb went off. Magee was subsequently found guilty of planting the bomb and received 8 life sentences. He was later released in 1999 under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement. - Falklands and Mrs Thatcher Falklands and Mrs Thatcher. The political effects of the war were strong in both countries. A wave of patriotic sentiment swept through both: the Argentine loss prompted even larger protests against the ruling military government, which hastened its downfall; in the United Kingdom, the government of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was bolstered. It helped Thatcher's government to victory in the 1983 general election, which prior to the war was seen as by no means certain. The war has played an important role in the culture of both countries, and has been the subject of several books, films, and songs. Over time, the cultural and political weight of the conflict has had less effect on the British public than on that of Argentina, where the war is still a topic of discussion.

- Thatcher: "No! No! No!" A heavily edited version of Margaret Thatcher's statement of 30 October 1990 to the House of Commons on the European Council meeting at Rome held on 27/28 October. The Council was meant to discuss the Uruguay Round on General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade which was due to end in a few months but for which the EC had not developed a policy (alone out of the trading blocs). However the Italian Prime Minister, Giulio Andreotti, decided that the Council would refuse to discuss the GATT and instead push for the final stage in European Economic and Monetary Union in an attempt to get Thatcher to either agree or to force her to say "No" and thereby bring about her downfall by Europhile members of her party. Thatcher's hostility to a federal Europe led to Geoffrey Howe resigning from the Government on 1 November and to his fellow federalist Michael Heseltine's bid for the Tory leadership which brought down Thatcher on 22 November. As Howe later said: "I wanted to change the policies, not the leader. But if that meant the leader had to go, then so it had to be". After the Rome Council a French official was asked whether it had failed. He answered: "On the contrary, the Council had been an outstanding success, since it had re-established an eleven-to-one situation in the Community and destabilised Thatcher at home". Includes Eurosceptic interventions by Norman Tebbit (Con.), David Owen (Ind.), Ron Leighton (Lab.), Tony Favell (Con.), and Tony Benn (Lab.). www.publications ...

And anyone who looks younger than me Makes me check for my wallet, my phone and my keys, And I'm tired of being tired out Always being on the lookout for thieving gits. We're all wondering how we ended up so scared; We spent ten long years teaching our kids not to care And that "there's no such thing as society" anyway, And all the rich folks act surprised When all sense of community dies, But you just closed your eyes to the other sidev Of all the things that she did. Thatcher f**ked the kids. And it seems a little bit rich to me, The way the rich only ever talk of charity In times like the seventies, the broken down economy Meant even the upper tier was needing some help. - Palin the Next Thatcher? No Way, Says Claire Berlinski Complete video at: fora.tv When asked if Sarah Plain can follow in Margaret Thatcher's footsteps, There Is No Alternative author Claire Berlinski denies any significant comparison between the two. Berlinksi lambastes, "We're talking about putting someone who might be prepared in 2016 in office - are you serious?" ----- Expanding on her book, Claire Berlinski asserts that Margaret Thatcher saved Great Britain by asserting her iron will -- exemplified in international affairs by the Falklands War and domestically by breaking the coal miners' strike -- and by restoring a moral philosophy that begins with the individual. Berlinski goes on to compare and contrast Barack Obama and Sarah Palin with Thatcher. Finally, from her vantage point as a six-year resident of Istanbul, Berlinski offers her assessment of precarious Turkey/US relations and the prospect of a truly moderate Islam. - Hoover Institution Claire Berlinski was born in 1968 in California, and grew up in New York, Seattle and California.
