Is the iPad Good for School and Textbooks? - - During live phone calls recently, Craighton gave me a buzz. Craighton is a great kid, who happens to live fairly close to my house. In fact... he's BEEN to my house. He was at Gnomedex last year with us, and attended the Hejira concert at my house back in February when Kat was here. Why didn't he just come on over here to ask his question? In any case, Craighton called to ask me how I could see the iPad used as an educational tool in schools. An example would be all students being issued an iPad with all of their books loaded right on the device, assignments done and turned in this way and so forth.

Choosing a Textbook in the Digital Age -part 1 of 2 Traditionally, text-books have been the reference source for the majority of the content presented in a given disciplinary course. However, increasingly texts include more full-color pages with images, figures and photos than they do black-and-white written-word. The text might also have several different indexing features including a short and long table of contents, glossary, chapter contents and a traditional key-word index. Frequently, a number of supplementary items, such as study guides, case study booklets, and base-level entry knowledge pamphlets can be packaged with the text. For lab-based classes, lab guidelines can be packaged into a tailored lab manual for that particular class, or a pre-printed lab manual can be included with the text. Most texts are also now supported by a website with a suite of online materials for students and additional presentation materials for instructors. Some also offer a complete Blackboard plug-in, or the option of using the publishers own student registration website to create an online component, or completely online course in that discipline. Given all these options, choosing which text to adopt, especially for multi-section courses, can be a daunting task. Pressure comes from students, peers, administrators and the publishing companies themselves to adopt the right one. The adoption decision can carry a $200-plus buying decision for the student, and affect the lives and livelihoods of many others. Join the Anatomy and ...

Digital Textbook Introduce to Korea Digital Textbook [Definition] Digital textbooks can be defined as core textbooks for students, with which students can learn contents that are tailored to their abilities and interests. Digital textbooks offer various interactive functions, and provide the learner with a combination of textbooks, reference books, workbooks, dictionaries and multimedia contents such as video clips, animations, and virtual reality, both at school and at home, without the constraints of time and space. In other words, digital textbooks are alive and in motion, and as such are literally living and moving textbooks that construct and create the knowledge not only of individual learners, but also the community, and support and manage the teaching and learning activities of teachers and learners. Learners can create their own textbooks while using the digital textbook, underlining the important parts, taking notes, and ultimately combining the contents with high-quality, reliable knowledge that is their own. [History] The Korean Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development stated that it will develop the digital textbook as a study assistance tool, which utilizes digital media, to go beyond the limitations of conventional paper textbooks. The digital textbook's available content can be updated on the fly without the need to wait for new yearly revisions. The government tested the system last year with the help of 300 elementary school students from four South Korean ...
Lies in the Christian Textbooks (Part 1) After growing up in a christian school, I looked back at one of my old textbooks and was appalled at what I had been taught. My intentions are to go over the obvious lies in the textbook and attempt to explain why there are so many adamant creationists out there... (I'll give you a hint: It's because we're taught that creation is scientific and we can't trust evolutionist scientists because they aren't following God. So no matter what evidence they have, their ***ysis must be misguided.) Going Digital: California's Textbook Project This is the VOA Special English Education Report, from California has a new program called the Digital Textbook Initiative. In June, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said "Starting this fall with high school math and science, we will be the first state in the nation to provide schools with a state-approved list of digital textbooks." He talked about his effort to get schools to use materials available free online. He listed reasons why he thinks digital textbooks make sense. California approves traditional textbooks in six-year cycles. Digital ones can offer the latest information. They lighten the load of school bags. They save paper and trees, and make learning more fun and interactive. And lastly he said they help schools with their finances. The state has had to make severe cuts in school spending because of deep financial problems. More than six million students attend California public schools. Earlier this year, California invited content developers to offer digital math and science materials for high schools. These had to meet at least ninety percent of the states learning requirements. Specially trained teachers examined six*** textbooks and approved ten of them. Six of the ten were published by the CK12 Foundation. Co-founder Neeru Khosla says the nonprofit group had been developing digital science and math books for about two years. The foundation paid teachers and other education professionals to write and edit them. The money ...

US Textbooks: Muslims Discovered America Saudi-funded textbooks being used in America's K-12 classrooms. Teaching, among other things, that Jesus was a "Palestinian," the state of Israel never existed, and that the Muslims discovered America before Columbus. At this rate, perhaps even Saudi grade-school textbooks, complete with jihadi and dhimmi declarations, will come to instruct American school-children. ooo OOO ooo "Public Schools Teach the ABCs of Islam," by Erick Stakelbeck for CBN News, October 9, 2008: - Several recent studies have shown that American students are alarmingly ignorant about US history and world events. Experts have contributed the problem to everything from failing schools to substandard teachers. But what about content? For instance, did you know that Muslims discovered America? Or that Jerusalem is an Arab city? That's just some of the "history" that students in America's K-12 classrooms have been taught in recent years--with the help of taxpayer money. A new report by the non-profit Institute for Jewish and Community Research finds that American high school and elementary textbooks contain countless inaccuracies about Christianity, Judaism, Israel and the Middle East. The Institute examined 28 of the most widely-used history, geography and social studies textbooks in America. It found at least 500 errors. One book ignored the Jewish roots of Christianity, saying the faith was founded by a "young Palestinian" named Jesus. Another stated as fact that the Koran was revealed to ...

Singapore School Trials iPad as Textbook Replacement For more news visit ☛ or Follow us on Twitter ☛ http A Singapore school is ditching textbooks in favor of Ipads as a new teaching tool. The Ipads is seen as just the thing for the school as it is lighter and more mobile than textbooks and notebooks. With the goal of changing teaching and learning in its classrooms, Singapore's Nanyang Girl's High School has replaced its textbooks with iPad tablet computers. The school has now ordered some 150 iPads for a selected number of students and teachers for a test run. For some of the school's lucky students, heavy textbooks and notebooks are a thing of the past, now they are walking around campus with their iPads, learning and also entertaining themselves. "I think it is a very fresh experience and of course like other classmates of mine I think it's really very fun. Like today, in the morning when I came to school, a lot of them were fiddling around with the iPads and trying with new apps, so compared to books which are very conventional, I think iPad is a new approach. So I guess many of us will find it very fresh and very fun and exciting experience." For the school's Dean of Curriculum, Seah Hui Yong, the iPad came at the right moment. [Seah Hui Yong, Dean of Curriculum]: "(We found that) it was a very good personal learning device, extremely mobile, light weight, it's easy to use, I think if you talk to the girls you will realize that they practically don't need training. I think if anything, the joke is ...

Find a PDF Version of a Textbook Visit for more helpful tips. Everyday everyone's going more digital. We use laptops to write our documents more and we even have devices like an Amazon Kindle which can digitally transport thousands of books. Have you ever conceived the idea of throwing away the heavy textbook and going PDF? Before I continue, I just want to mention that I'm not advocating the following. I'm just letting you know that it can be done. Here's some things to consider. 1. Not all books can be found online. You may be more lucky to find a solutions manual of a textbook over the actual book itself. On the other hand, that might not be bad at all. 2. Obviously its illegal to obtain these books in these formats without paying for them. Not all publishing companies offer PDF version of their books to students or solutions manuals. Usually these text are intended for teachers. In addition, there are copyright laws and all that other goodness you should be cautious about. 3. Make sure to invest in a larger monitor, maybe a Dell or Apple. Make sure it's like 20in or more. Trust me, trying to read documents on a small laptop screen is the last thing you want. Even worse, trying to read it on an iPhone or small netbook can do even worst things to your eyes. 4. Be willing to accept the consequences if caught. If you're okay with everything I've mentioned so far, let's proceed. Here's what you need 1. You need an internet connection 2. You might need a rapidshare account to make ...
