  • New York City Travel: Tenement Museum, Manhattan Biking & Rockefeller Center Myfriend Linda had to leave early on Monday morning so I was by myself again to explore the city. In the late morning I had planned a visit to the Lower East Side Tenement Museum, a five-story brick tenement building that was built in 1863. The Tenement Museum promotes tolerance and knowledge about the immigrant experience, and it does so with tours of the various apartments that are located at 97 Orchard Street, with each apartment telling the unique story of an immigrant family. Guided by an enthusiastic and extremely knowledgeable volunteer by the name of Daryl Hamilton, we really started to get an idea of the conditions of poverty, crime and poor hygiene that afflicted 19th century immigrants. The Moore family apartment illustrated the story of Irish immigrants who lived in this building for one year in 1869. Daryl impressed the whole crowd with his extensive knowledge of 19th century history as well as details about the Lower East Side neighbourhood and the construction details of mid 19th century tenements. After our hour-long tour, the audience was truly impressed and left with a much better idea of the harsh living conditions that these immigrants were faced with. At about 3 pm I got to use my Explorer Pass again, this time for a bicycle rental with Bike and Roll, a company that provides guided bicycle tours and rentals in various locations around New York City. I started riding southwards on the Hudson River Greenway, a paved recreational trail that is separated ...
  • Tenement Life 1860-1910 Squalid NYC Tenements... How some of my ancestors lived after arriving in New York in the late 1800s from Ireland. I made this slideshow from pictures in the archives of the NYC Dept of Tenement houses, from various Manhattan street scene photographs, and photos taken by pioneers like Jacob Riis who fought for better sanitary conditions among New York's poor. At the end is a 1-minute clip of one of the first motion pictures shot in NYC in 1903 by Thomas Edison, which shows a scene in the lower east side at the turn of the century titled "Move On" The music is from the soundtrack of "The Assassination of Jesse James"

  • DooM II music - MAP 02 / 11 / 17: UNDERHALLS / CIRCLE OF DEATH/ TENEMENTS (OPL) It is more difficult to hit FN+Druck (Print Screen) than you may expect. This is the reason why my health is always so low on the screenshots ;-) Get the song here: I delayed THE HEALER STALKS for too long, so I decided to make this video. Just took me 3 1/2 hours. Enjoy! Of course, there are many other videos on youtube with the DOOM/DOOM2-OST, but they all use the MS-GS-Wavetable or other PCM-based synthesizer. This make the music sound "more real", but not Doom-like anymore. "Skulltag" includes a great OPL-synthesizer which plays the music back "correctly" (our SoundBlaster-card in '95 sounded almost the same). "DosBox"s synth doesn't sound bad, but many instruments are just weird there xD

  • PSX Doom - Part 52 - Map45 (Tenements) 2/2 Here's Part 2 of Map45 of PSX Doom, Tenements.IMHO, this is the best version of Doom, unless you count the XBox 360 version. Though I'm not necessarily going for 100% on every map (which on some maps is impossible due to glitches) I'll try to cover as much as I can. But since there's 59 levels, I'll be playing through each level once only, restarting with a password when I stop for the day. So if I miss something or can't fit everything in 10 minutes, oh well. ;) Enjoy.

  • Tenements created by Irving Rodriguez Notes: 1) African Americans I felt that African Americans needed to be added to the video because there lives where being ignored. Many of the non African American community ignored them. Yet they paid more to live in a tenement. Another interesting fact is African Americans maintained a cleaner tenement compared to others and yet the value of the tenement fell. 2) Tenement act Before the Tenement act, housing conditions where poor, people lived in rooms with no ventilation and the wealthy people ignored them. It was then Jacob A. Riis took pictures of the environment and posted them on the newspaper. Many people including the ones who didnt know how to read English understood the message. The government then implemented the Tenement act of 1901 to enforce laws against poor living conditions that doesnt provide the basic essentials such as plumbing and windows. 3) July and August The summer, living in a room full of crowded people, with no ventilation can be uncomfortable. The roof was shared by the residence as a way to escape the heat. 4) Sick and death Many children died from the measles or respiratory diseases. Tenements where a dangerous place to live, diseases spread quickly in the crowded room. Many of those people couldnt afford health care and died. Yet these cases could have been prevented if they had health care. 5) The streets Because the streets lack jobs, children and adults would gamble. And if they didnt have money, they would steal from people. Schools ...
