  • Haydn Paukenmesse , Missa in Tempore Belli, Mass in Time of War 05.Agnus Dei - Bernstein.avi Missa in tempore belli (English: Mass in Time of War) is Joseph Haydn's tenth, and one of the most popular, of his four*** settings of the mass. This mass is catalogued Mass No. 10 in C major, (H. XXII:9), and is sometimes known as the Paukenmesse (English: Kettledrum Mass) due to the inclusion of the timpani in its orchestration. However, the autographed m***cript contains "Missa in tempore belli" in Haydn's own handwriting, showing no doubt that this was the intended title from the beginning. • Haydn composed this mass at Eisenstadt in August 1796, at the time of Austria's general mobilisation into war. Four years into the European war that followed the French Revolution, Austrian troops were doing badly against the French in Italy and Germany, and Austria feared invasion. Reflecting the troubled mood of his time, Haydn's potent integration of references to battle in the Benedictus and Agnus Dei movements is inspired. The Mass was first performed on December 26, 1796 in the Piarist Church of Maria Treu in Vienna. Haydn was a deeply religious man, who appended the words "Praise be to God" at the end of every completed score. As Kapellmeister to the Prince Nikolaus II Esterházy, Haydn's principal duty in the last period of his life beginning in 1796 was the composition of an annual mass to honour the name day of Prince Nicholas' wife, Princess Maria Hermenegild, 8 September, the birth of the Blessed Virgin. In a final flowering of his genius, he faithfully completed six ...

  • Otto Olsson - In vernali tempore (Choral) In Springtime (2/8) Otto Olsson (19 December 1879 -- 1 September 1964) was a Swedish composer, organist and choir director. In vernali tempore (In springtime) from Piae Cantiones The Swedish Radio Choir conducted by Gustaf Sjökvist In vernali tempore When the cold of winter is banished, the swallow brings glad tidings of the spring. The beauty of the earth, the sea, the forest and all Nature is come and the world is made anew. The life force of the body returns, the torment of the soul vanishes at this blissful time. The ground is dressed in flowers and the field is green. The birds delight with song and caressing notes. The sea is free from tempests, the air rainless and full of fragrance. The sun dispels the clouds and shines with its clear, gentle rays. Of, what rare brilliance, what glory with God, what refulgance of His countenance! From Him all things - great and small - have their beauteous origin, yet the difference between Him and His creation exceeds that between night and day. Otto Olsson was one of the greatest organ virtuosos of his time. He studied organ with Lagergren and composition with Dente at the Royal Swedish Academy of Music, and then joined the faculty there, where he taught harmony (1908-24) and then organ (1924-45).[1] He was also the organist at the Gustav Vasa church in Stockholm. He became a member of the Swedish Royal Academy of Music in 1915. He used his strong background in counterpoint, combined with an affinity for French organ music, to create his late ...

  • Carmina Burana: Veri dulcis in tempore Carmina Burana, Latin for "Songs from Benediktbeuern", is the name given to a m***cript of 254 poems and dramatic texts from the 11th or 12th century, although some are from the 13th century. The pieces were written almost entirely in Medieval Latin; a few in Middle High German, and some with traces of Old French or Provençal. Many are macaronic, a mixture of Latin and German or French vernacular. They were written by students and clergy when the Latin idiom was the lingua franca across Italy and western Europe for travelling scholars, universities and theologians. Most of the poems and songs appear to be the work of Goliards, clergy (mostly students) who sent up and satirized the Church. The collection preserves the works of a number of poets, including Peter of Blois, Walter of Châtillon and the anonymous one, referred to as the Archpoet. The collection was found in 1803 in the Bavarian monastery of Benediktbeuern and is now housed in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in Munich. Along with the Carmina Cantabrigiensia, the Carmina Burana is the most important collection of Goliard and vagabond songs. The m***cripts reflect an 'international' European movement, with songs originating from the following countries, Occitanie, France, England, Scotland, Switzerland, Aragon, Castille, Germany.
