- BIGFOOT Discovery ! | Press Conference Highlights The two Georgia men who claim to have stumbled across a Bigfoot corpse didn't present more than a couple of inconclusive photos to a press conference Friday. ASSOCIATED PRESS : [ 15 August 2008 ] Sasquatch or no Sasquatch, a press conference Friday about a Bigfoot discovery felt like a zoo. A man holding a "Honk for Bigfoot!" sign greeted news vans that pulled up to Palo Alto's Crowne Plaza Hotel. Over 200 people - purportedly serious journalists despite one wearing a Bigfoot costume - packed into a sweaty conference room for the big announcement that the mythical creature had finally been found. Not only found, but stuffed into an ice-chest and its DNA sent off to the lab. At least that's what Matthew Whitton and Rick Dyer claimed. The two say they stumbled upon the beast while hiking in a northern Georgia in June. "I didn't believe in Bigfoot at the time," said Whitton, who is now convinced that he's found one. This was no hoax, they insisted, despite the fake video interview they did with Whitton's brother - or as they pretended on YouTube, taxonomist Dr. Paul Van Buren. Still, they were having a hard time selling the story. Though the conference promised photo and DNA evidence, the former was blurry and the latter was less than convincing. In an interview with Scientific American, Jeffrey Meldrum, a Bigfoot researcher and Idaho State University professor, dismissed the photos. "It just looks like a costume with some fake guts thrown on top for effect," he said. As for ...

- Barcode of Life In 2003, Paul Hebert, researcher at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada, proposed "DNA barcoding" as a way to identify species. Barcoding uses a very short genetic sequence from a standard part of the genome the way a supermarket scanner distinguishes products using the black stripes of the Universal Product Code (UPC). Two items may look very similar to the untrained eye, but in both cases the barcodes are distinct. Until now, biological specimens were identified using morphological features like the shape, size and color of body parts. In some cases a trained technician could make routine identifications using morphological "keys" (step-by-step instructions of what to look for), but in most cases an experienced professional taxonomist is needed. If a specimen is damaged or is in an immature stage of development, even specialists may be unable to make identifications. Barcoding solves these problems because even non-specialists can obtain barcodes from tiny amounts of tissue. This is not to say that traditional taxonomy has become less important. Rather, DNA barcoding can serve a dual purpose as a new tool in the taxonomists toolbox supplementing their knowledge as well as being an innovative device for non-experts who need to make a quick identification. The gene region that is being used as the standard barcode for almost all animal groups is a 648 base-pair region in the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase 1 gene ("CO1"). COI is proving highly effective in ...

The nearly invisible shrimp measures only 9mm in total length. The ricordea polyp is about 30mm in diameter for comparison. We first reported and photographed this shrimp in October 2009. Subsequently, we sent a preserved specimen to taxonomist Dr. Richard Heard at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory. Dr. Heard was unable to match the specimen with a described shrimp species. We will be sending additional specimens in the near future to confirm this shrimp's newness to science. Music, Video and Aquarium MORPHOLOGIC STUDIOS 2010 See bit.ly for more details. - 19 May 2006 : Science Diary - Reef Creatures The sea not only occupies approximately two thirds of the surface of our planet, but it is also home to a large proportion of the species that inhabit it, and diversity at higher taxonomic levels is much greater than on land or in freshwater. There are about 82 eukaryote phyla (organisms with a cell structure) currently recognised, and out of these about 60 have marine representatives, while only 40 are found in either freshwater or on land. The reason for this high number of phyla inhabiting the sea is that most of them originated in the sea in the first place, and subsequently colonised land or freshwater. About 23 eukaryote phyla, 18 of which are animals, are confined to the marine environment. Most of these are obscure phyla with few representative species, but the exceptions are the Echinodermata (sea urchins, starfish, sea cucumbers, brittle stars and crinoids) which contains around 6000 recorded species, and the forameniferans with around 4000 recorded species (with many more in the fossil record). Other phyla like the Cnidaria (that includes the corals and anemones), sponges and brown and red algae are almost exclusiely marine, with only a small number of freshwater representatives. Most of the reef creatures we have focussed on to date are pretty conspicuous, namely the corals and the fish. But reefs are the home to hundreds of species with representatives from most of the phyla that inhabit the sea. It is therefore not ...

- IRRI Pioneer Interview: No Bull—feeling better for having worked at IRRI Obviously, one's career is a continuum. When you are a different age, your expectations in your career are different. As my career developed, I moved into more and more senior positions. Having said that, when I joined CIP, we were just a few staff members and we were essentially setting up the institute. That was a tremendous experience. And, when I went to Central America at age 27, I became a program leader working backwards and forward between all these countries and doing lots of different things. I actually learned how to grow potatoes successfully. I trained as a taxonomist and ended up doing anthropology, agronomy, postharvest storage, you name it. So, that in itself was very challenging and fruitful. And I never managed a germplasm collection before I came to the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI; ). So, that was a bit of a learning curve for me. IRRI had an enormous reputation that you kind of got sucked into. So, I can't say this was better than that. They [the experiences] gave me satisfaction in different ways. \ What I can say is that I think that my time overseas in both CG centers was a better experience overall than my experience in the university. I loved working with the students. Having good students, who are keen to learn and do things, is really very satisfying. But from an early age I wanted to go abroad and I knew I wanted to work in agriculture. I partly come from an agriculture farming background. My brother has been able to ...
