- Finding Danger in the Chest with 64 Slice CT CTA (CT Angiography) using 64 slice technology can perform what is called the "Triple Rule-Out" - looking at the arteries of the heart, the lungs, and the largest artery in the chest, the aorta. These areas are where three potentially lethal conditions happen - heart attack (arteries of the heart), aortic aneurysm/dissection/rupture, pulmonary embolism (blood clot in lung vessels). In this video clip, new, important information about the aorta is presented - the importance of measuring it in two states - systole (heart squeezes and ascending aorta fills with blood) and diastole (heart relaxes and ascending aortic blood volume is less). If the aorta is greatly extended during systole, under maximum blood volume/pressure, but signficantly smaller when the heart is relaxed, it is important information for the physician and patient in determining the timing of surgery. In emergency settings, this scan can quickly identify these three life-threatening reasons for chest pain so that action can be taken. Dr. and Mrs. Dimond began building Diastole in 1976 and lived here until Mrs. Dimond's death in 1983.
