KIM SALMON and THE SURREALISTS "I Won't Tell" Video for Kim Salmon & The Surrealists 1997 single, "I Won't Tell", lead track off the "You Gotta Let Me Do My Thing" album . Directed by Caroline Kennedy. Produced by No Name films. Shot on black & white Super 8, it stars Fiona Horne of DefFX (as "the Torso") and features glimpses of the '97 lineup of Kim Salmon (vocal/guitar), Stu Thomas (bass) & Greg Bainbridge (drums). The single came out as a green vinyl 7-inch on Guilt Free Records, Kim Salmon's own label and was the first appearance of horns in The Surrealists' music. During the shooting, $5 was shelled out to move an irate drunk guy with a dog, who wanted to have a BBQ and refused to do it somewhere else.. The underpants featured on-screen were duly signed at the end of filming..

Kim Salmon And The Surrealists - Je t' aime Salmon's other card was a new band of his own, Kim Salmon and The Surrealists. This band was a three piece, with Tony Pola on drums and Brian Hooper on bass. They released their first lp in late 1988. Entitled Hit Me With The Surreal Feel, it features hysterically funny pictures of Salmon's face with his eyeballs replaced by fish eyes. The recording took place in a rehearsal studio using only a four track recorder and as a result is fairly primitive sounding -- very echo-y. The studio time cost a total of sixty dollars and Kim obtained the multi-track master tapes by the expedient of asking for them as a birthday gift from his wife and parents. The music is less non-traditional rhythmically than the Scientists, but it's still not your standard rock workout by a long shot. The jazzy title track is split into four pieces that separate the record into three parts. There's an odd song called "Torture" that with different instrumentation could have been a late 60s bubblegum hit. Follow that up with the 50s rock sound of "Devil In Disguise", tack on a version of "Blue Velvet", and you have a very interesting record. February of 1990 saw the release of a second album with the Surrealists, entitled Just Because You Can't See It...Doesn't Mean It Isn't There. In marked contrast to Hit Me With The Surreal Feel, this album has full and professional sounding production, and it's also got some of the most accessible songs Salmon had recorded since the Perth lineup of the Scientists ...

NYC Graffiti (Poetic Surrealist Tag) At Nicholas Robinson Gallery, in an exhibit by MARTIN WÖHRL, viewers were encouraged to participate. Philip Long took up the pen and left his mark on the wall. This type of mark making is also known as automatic drawing. Poetic Surrealists used this type of drawing to unleash the subconscious. I use it as the base for most of my abstract paintings and some of my leather mosaics. I look at the intersecting lines and find images that naturally jump out at me. Sometimes it's a face, but it can just as easily be a violin or a chicken. This was the last gallery my wife and I went to before returning home after Halloween. Slide Five provides the vibes with the song Rhode Trip.

When the Scientists stopped, Salmon continued the Surrealists as his main band, while also playing in The Beasts Of Bourbon.

Kim Salmon & The Surrealists LIVE @ Ding Dong Lounge 14/11/08 The Dynamic Trio of Kim Salmon, Stu Thomas and Phil Collings return to play more amazing live shows. The sad part of this story is that my phone ran out of space not very far into the song and that's a shame because this footage doesn't suck too badly, quality wise. They're playing the as yet unreleased song (although it can be found on Kim's myspace) "Pearls B4 Swine" which hopefully will be part of their next much anticipated record which is supposed to be captured in live situations of surrealism like this.

Salvador Dali on "I've Got a Secret" part 1 of 2 This not-as-funny-as-they-thought-it-would-be appearance opens the 1963 game show "I've Got a Secret" (Feb. 25) by Dali putting his face in the Mona Lisa -- literally. Then he critiques artwork by regular panelists Bill Cullen, Betsy Palmer, Henry Morgan, and Bess Myerson, commenting "No comment" in each case. Is he real? Is he putting us on? You decide. In part 2 he comes across no better. This episode is an interesting contrast to his appearance on "What's My Line?" (also available on YouTube), where the whole enterprise seems more serious.

The Black Dahlia Surrealist Avenger The Black Dahlia murder was a surreal act, intentionally or otherwise. A suspected killer of Elizabeth Short, Dr. George Hodel, was influenced by Surrealism. The homicide involved Sadistic techniques to mutilate the victim, horribly realizing surreal, anthropomorphic themes of female objectification, including torso bisection, resections and posing the corpse in the fashion of Man Ray's "Minotaur" In morbid recognition, surrealists such as William Copley ("It Is Midnight, Dr. _____") and Marcel Duchamp reciprocated with works like Duchamp's enigmatic "Étant donnés". Fully comprehending the meaning behind Étant donnés is not realistic given the complexity of the creator and his creation, nor did he ever explain his final tableau, but Duchamp is casting a critical eye on this mortal coil as he weaves in personal biography and historical references. The depth of his thinking brings forth an ***ally charged interpretation of life to the surface, juxtaposed below with the very darkest obsession, irony and tragedy.
