Half the duffers I met would not know a fat steer From a blessed old Alderney cow. Whilst they're mustering there I am wondering here Who is riding brown Harlequin now? Are the pikers as wild and the scrubs Just as dense in the Brigalow country as when There was never a homestead and never a fence Between Brigalow Vale and The Glen. Do they yard the big Micks 'neath the light of the moon? Do the yard-wings re-echo the row Of stockwhips and hoof-beats? And what sort of clown is there riding old Harlequin now? [Instrumental] A demon to handle! a devil to ride, Small wonder the surcingle burst; you'd have thought that he'd buck himself out of his hide' On the morning we saddled him first. I'd a mind how he cow-kicked the spur on my boot, And though long ago, still I vow If they're wheeling a piker no new-chum galoot Would be riding old Harlequin now! - Solomon's first time ever in a surcingle. Solomon has always held his head really high while working. Previous owners have used a martingale or bungee to make him frame up. We are hoping to teach him to hold his head in the right place so that he will not need to have anything extra tied to him while working. Why do it? Because he needs to hold his head and neck in the proper position to safely work without injuring himself. With his head up high, he hollows out his back, which causes all sorts of chiropractic issues, and makes him work the wrong muscles all along the length of his body. He needs to round his back and use the muscles on the top of his neck. This is his first time in a surcingle, at least with us, and it is going to take him some time to figure it out. The key is to never apply too much pressure on the horse while working him with one of these, nor use it for too long. A horse in a surcingle who panics can be a serious wreck... so one needs to do the work calmly and steadily, using it as a training tool, NOT a shortcut.

- Getting used to the feel of a cinch Although Dolly has worn bareback pads and surcingles in the past I figured that putting tension on a band--whether during saddling or mounting--was going to be a potentially tense event. So I've been spending a lot of time just putting the surcingle over her back, tightening it very easily at first, then waiting to see how she reacts. Tugging on the surcingle, playing with it. Breaking down the process into baby steps, basically. Dolly can go from calm to dynamo in a matter of seconds, so it is extra important to me to be certain everything we do is with her total cooperation.

- Second Time in the Surcingle Sammi did not like belly squeeze pressure. She was not overly reactive she just would try to walk or trot away. After about 20 min of desensitizing she relaxed and allowed me to tighten the surcingle.
- Mama's First Time With A Side Rein, 3rd time with Surcingle. Going other direction. Taken somewhere in early 09...February I think. I had not yet purchased real side reins, so I used a bit of Baling Twine with a loose safety release knot on the surcingle. I had bitted her up once before standing loose in the arena just to see what she would do, she stood like a champ. My goal was to get her flexible and loose, and was just beginning to start to ask her to give under saddle. I don't think she had EVER gone through this type of training before. Going the other direction with her head tipped to the outside helps to stretch and strengthen the neck and shoulder muscles. You can see the small amount of tension applied here by how far her nose is tipped to the outside. The White band around her nose is a hand knotted nose band that basically was supposed to act like a separate nose piece on a halter...I purchased it for a few bucks at a tack yard sale, put it on her this one time, adjusted it and watched as it loosened up as she was working. It would NOT stay snug on her and I never used it again after this session. It was the only head piece I owned at the time aside from her western bridle which I was NOT going to use for this purpose. Within a few days I went to the local tack store and bought a used basic english bridle just for working in the round pen.
- Bud's 1st surcingle challenge 2 yr old colt by Smart Little Boy out of Mr. Holey Sox mare, "SEF BOY HE'S SMART," being started on ground work. This was Bud's 1st day wearing a surcingle and he never bucked Nor did he tuck his tail and run like a spanked dog... This goes to show what De-sensitizing a horse can do. Anything to get them used to the unknown feeling of something on them or under their belly helps in everyday training... We will be keeping a video diary of his progress so you can see how important ground work really is. It is the number 1 key to making a great horse. It all starts here... To be continued...Keep watching.

- Charm, Icelandic Horse, Ground Driving Here we are doing some ground driving with Charm, a 3 1/2 year old Icelandic Horse filly. She is very new to ground driving. She is trained with natural horsemanship and clicker training. We are using the length of a lead rope (about 10') for the lines (not long lines). While we are not using a surcingle in the video, it is much safer to use a surcingle due to the possiblity of the horse getting tangled in the lines. http

Where there's a will, there's a way and I didn't want the surcingle slipping back on him, getting into his groin and making him buck. He hardly noticed it, went about his normal play, never even tried to bite at it or pull it off or rub it off!
- presents: The 2 Minute How to Choose a Surcingle In "How to Choose a Surcingle" Joanna Robson, DVM, CVSMT, CMP, CVA, SFT, illustrates how too often surcingles "undo" positive benefits that can be achieved in a training session. Poorly designed surcingles create pinching at the withers and cause the horse to raise its head, hollow its back and tense up as opposed to relaxing and being "round." Dr. Robson also shows what to look for in proper surcingles. Much of the footage in this video comes from Dr. Robson's new DVD "Recognizing the Horse in Pain and What You Can Do About It." The DVD features: recognizing problem backs, saddle-fitting, treeless and Western saddles, what to expect in a professional saddle-fitting, choosing accessories, actual acupuncture and chiropractic cases, stretches, and more. - Ground driving the horse with halter and rope (5) While Parts 1-4 took you to lunging in the roundpen, you can also use these skills to train for line OR ground driving. Part 5 of this series will show you how to use the rope and halter to start one-line, pre-driving exercises. Upcoming Part (6) will show the completed circle with driving 1-2 lines in a sidepull and surcingle and girth. Exercises in the large arena: * while I let the horse select direction at first, then started guiding, if you have a partner, they can guide in front while you guide from behind. * horse becomes comfortable with you behind them and is able to continue moving forward with you behind. * horse remains comfortable with the whip and the rope touching all parts of the body. You are looking for a horse that remains calm - does not rush forward, break the desired gait, turn and twist against the lines, etc... * If your horse is not calm, rushes, kicks, twists against the rope, etc... go back a step and get your horse calm with the tools FIRST! "Chunk it down" so your horse gains confidence. * Experiment with whip, voice and rope cues. How much does it take to get your horse to move forward? How much to turn? Can you use the whip to aid the turn? Can the whip prevent cutting in on the circle? * Take note if the horse prefers one direction or the other. However, be sure to work both sides equally. This work is the last step before actually ground driving your horse. How quickly your horse proceeded through the training isn't as important as how ...

- Mystic Ground Driving Week 1 Mystic is almost two years old and is a belgian/QH cross. This is a video of Mystic's first week ground driving. To begin: I took a couple days to get him used to the training equipment (surcingle, whip, lead lines). Next, I trained him with one line (side) at a time until he was comfortable with me walking behind him. The driving lines are attached directly to his halter since he does not wear a bit or bridle yet. Then, I used both driving lines for his last two lessons. He is still learning to stop and back up, but is doing really well after only a couple quick lessons! MUSIC: "Diamonds & Rust" by Blackmore's Night

- Balthasar: 3rd day with long reins 2010-02-07 16:06 Balthasar, 2008 Shagya stallion (A year and a half old) 3rd day with long reins. Now into the kicking zone and longues rênes à la Française with surcingle, though halter instead of cavesson; still no bit. Outdoor on the parking area. He is still very confused and also distracted by mates and food in the adjacent paddock, but improving. He clearly tries to understand and avoids doing wrong by doing nothing until he thinks he has understood. Usually he would trot on "TR..", now I have to ask him 3 times, but he does well after all. Level-headed for an Arab and the tail out and relaxed just as it should. The Isopor-like noise tells it is cold. Bulky winter clothing is an absolute necessity now, but doesn't exactly improve on the body language part. And, no! He is not cold! He is out in the paddock day & night with free access to a shed. As he has adapted very well he neither needs nor wants a blanket down to minus15C. He has winterfur like a European elk that happens to pass by; comming next..

In the 1950s I was with my father Bronco Don Johnson out in a mustering camp We lived on damper and thick slabs of corn meat with a drop of tomato sauce, great tucker mate All you needed was a billy of black tea, a saddle pouch Quartpot and a bit of sugar to wash it down Dad and the men were contract mustering cattle for the Winters A bullock had been killed by the Squatter and a bullock hide was pegged out on the ground with cut pieces of fence wire, just like the Kangaroo shooters did till they started shooting them for meat about 10 years later Don got Strawn Nelson and Cattle Pup Mc Ewan making hobble straps out of the greenhide doubled so the hair was folded in out of the way The thickest and best leather came from the backbone of the hide... The Bronco was whittling Hobble Pegs out of Gidgee to fix the hobble strap on the horses.Good wood Gidgee mate, fence posts are the very best? .So round the horses fetlock and poke it through a cut slot and cut a small hole to put the peg in the Aussie hobble peg had a small knob on each end so it wouldnt come out easy and was a few inches long Horses were hobbled out overnight to get a feed One mare had a small bell to listen for during the night to see if the horses were walking away or just feeding, and you knew where they were come daylight So at daylight they would saddle up and take the hoops out of the horses at ...

- Long Lining Clinic 2008 Ida Anderson long lining clinic. I have been interested in learning to long line and the perfect opportunity showed up. This is the first time for Danny to work in long lines and the first time I have ever worked with long lines. It was a great experience and I learned a lot. I tried to include clips that were also informative. (as I'm sure it gets boring watching us walk around) The first two clips were a bit goofy. He came around the first time and was completely laid back about the whole thing he decided to start sniffing and poking around the deck. The clip after Ida had lightly touched him with the whip and he got a bit 'offended'. You may also notice a change in my line on the first day. Her equipment had not arrived, so we were using someone elses until hers got there most conviently during my lesson time. Hope you enjoy the clips. If you are curious about anything don't be afraid to ask.

My goal was to get her flexible and loose, and was just beginning to start to ask her to give under saddle. I don't think she had EVER gone through this type of training before. The amount of tension I had actually applied here was about as much as one would apply when riding on a semi loose rein while asking for a direct rein turn. It was very small, just enough so that she could not put her head completely strait. Her head was tipped to the inside here.
