Smooth and Striated # 2: Berlin The photo series on Berlin, German capital, paralleled by the one on Dhaka, Bangladesh, is the result of an experiment that used music and photography to make sensible what Deleuze and Guattari, in their essay "Le lisse et le strié" (cf. Thousand Plateaux), defined "smooth" and "striated" space. The photos are combined with the sequences of Pierre Boulez's composition "Dérive 1" from 1984. It is the French composer who first applied the two terms in the context of the theoretical development of the serial music. The six-minute-long piece, in which he combined six instruments that at times seem to flee the conductor's control to produce a wallowing in sound, became the backbone for our representation of both Dhaka and Berlin. Walking through the two cities with our cameras, we sought for images, moments, situations, that could suggest the sense of smooth and striated space along and nearby water -- vacant spaces, slums, informal developments as well as festivals on one side; built up areas, infrastructure or sites planned under public intervention on the other. We also collected impressions: an obsolete sailing boat now exclusively used for theatre performances nearby the Museumsinsel, a small group of migrant youths sitting on the banks of Landwehrk***, an illuminated stair mysteriously descending to a former bunker, now re-used as bar, along the River Spree. The Striated Field of Play a sequel (kinda) to my last video. For more information, Update So I think I read a little bit faster than most people (maybe?)... There is much talk of having to pause to read the text. I kind of intended this. The idea is that you're not able to read it in one go, just like you can't really understand a game after playing once. Everything moves too fast... you can't sit around reading the description of each weapon or admiring the detail on bushes while your stronghold is getting destroyed. It's like the third level on battle toads-- but I think this turned out more frustrating than anything else... if/when I make another video I'll try to slow it down...
