  • Edgar Broughton Band.. American Boy Soldier..Keep Them Freaks A Rollin.Live At Abbey Road Dec 1969 A legend in its own lifetime, Keep Them Freaks a Rollin' was, as its subtitle makes plain, recorded live at Abbey Road Studios in 1969, as a possible first album by the then newly signed Broughton Band. However, the tapes were shelved in favor of a more conventional studio recording, and only one excerpt ever made it out, a harshly edited 45 of the closing "Out Demons Out," already established as the band's live tour de force. The full-length version, however, remained unheard and, like the rest of the show, it eventually faded into mythology. The tapes were finally resuscitated in 2004, to herald EMI's CD remastering of the full Edgar Broughton Band catalog. And, though 35 years had now passed, the primal energy and majesty of the Broughtons in full flight still burns through. Egged on by a studio full of friends and fans, the band recounts its entire period live show, with a churning "Smokestack Lightning" and an evil "Dropout Boogie" pinpointing the two influences that collided to create the Broughtons' own unique brew. "American Boy Soldier," still one of the most potent protest songs of the entire Vietnam era (and an equally valid component in the modern-day outfit's live show) is spellbinding and, at almost 15 minutes, spotlights the band's improvisational powers to perfection. And then there's "Out Demons Out," restored to its full ten-minute glory once again, and still capable of swaying the stoniest heart. Would history have been different had this become the ...

  • SFSU Chamber Singers - Small Flowers San Francisco State Chamber Singers, under the inspiring direction of the handsome Dr. Joshua Habermann, sing "Small Flowers" from "Three Boulding Chorales," music by Kevin Oldham (1960-1993). Performed at St Boniface Church in Anaheim on Feb 26, 2008. The text comes from a collection of poems called "There is a Spirit: The Nayler Sonnets" by renowned economic theorist Kenneth Boulding (1910-1993) inspired by the dying statement of tragic 17th c. Quaker leader James Nayler (or Naylor). Nayler was attacked and beaten to death at age 42, but moments before he expired, he made a moving statement about forgiveness, endurance and optimism. Boulding used elements of his own religious and behavioral beliefs and observations to inform his socio-economic theories. Small flowers there are beside the stoniest way, And on the seeming-endless journeying Some breaths of air are sweet, and some birds sing, And some new goal is reached in every day; Yet for the unknown end we wait and pray, When the last knot in this world's tangled string Is straightened out, and every evil thing Redeemed in heaven's undisputed sway. We know not how the day's to be born, Whether in clouds of glory or tongues of flame, As once at Pentecost the spirit came, Or whether imperceptibly as dawn; But as the seed must grow into a tree, So life is love, and love the end must be.

People take it as far as blaming races, nationalities, and religions. • San Anto Cultural Arts Center The summer of 09 was one of the best summers of my life. It wouldnt have turned out that way unless I had taken a Latino Cultural Expressions class last semester at UTSA. Some of our assignments required that we go out and explore the many depths of Latino/a culture that is ever-present in San Antonio. A particular paper had us wake up one Saturday morning, and head off to the San Antonio Cultural Arts Center on Guadalupe Street to take a mural tour. (For more information about this excellent artistic experience visit: At first glance, this was but a simple, little house obviously dedicated to art, the murals, and such. But after the mural tour, (which was, by the way, completely mind-blowing), rummaging through the endless stacks of childrens projects, and picking up The Placazo, it started dawning on me that this place was intricately involved with children from the community, and more like a diamond in the rough. I immediately signed up, got a call back from Christina, the coordinator at the San Antonio Cultural Arts Center, and was assigned a mentee named Matthew, age 13. The more I visited the San Anto Center, the more I wanted to go back and watch the children grow before my eyes. Its extremely hard to explain the amount of joy that is seated within a person, knowing that simply walking through a door can change the course of a childs day. Its even harder to explain the utter elation one feels watching a smile spread across a childs face, listening ...
