- Debate: Big Government Is Stifling The American Spirit October 26, 2010 Just about everyone has a reason to question how the size of our government affects America's financial and political future. Is government intervention in everything from economic policy to health care rewarding the "takers," and not the "makers," stifling innovators, entrepreneurs and business owners? Or has government done too little to support the growing poor and rapidly shrinking middle class?

- Dark Energy Found Stifling Growth in Universe www.nasa.gov Dark Energy Found Stifling Growth in Universe "The results are remarkably consistent with those from previous results that measure the expansion of the Universe using distance measurements, revealing that general relativity works as expected on large scales. The cluster work, in combination with other studies, also provides the strongest evidence to date that dark energy is the cosmological constant, or that 'nothing weighs something'. "

- New Hampshire Nannies: Why is the "Live Free or Die" State Banning Fish Pedicures? The always-expanding Nanny State does more than treat adults like children, it can also smother job creation—even in the "live free or die" state of New Hampshire. So as the national debate "pivots" from health care to jobs, Reason.tv suggests that politicians looking to"do something" about the stubbornly high unemployment rate first undo the regulations that ensnare entrepreneurs like Kim Ong. Ong's parents brought her family from Vietnam to the United States in 1985. "They said this is a country of freedom, a country of opportunities," recalls Ong, who took their words to heart and now owns Kim's Spa & Nails in Derry, New Hampshire. When the recession hit she began looking for new ways to generate business. Her thoughts turned to a luxurious practice that's popular in parts of Asia—fish pedicures.Ong spent over $6000 to purchase fish and equipment, a big investment for the small business owner. However, her gamble paid off when she saw how much customers loved having their feet exfoliated by tiny fish. Soon Ong had a waiting list for this hip new service. But instead of hiring more employees, Ong hired a lawyer to plead her case to state regulators who questioned the safety and hygeine of fish pedicures. Unfortunately for Ong and her customers, New Hampshire's Board of Barbering, Cosmetology, and Esthetics banned the practice. That's right, the state that lets adults motorcycle without a helmet or drive without a seat belt won't tolerate tiny fish nibbling at the dead ...
- Pakistan 'stifling Mumbai probe' - 05 Sep 09 In a move likely to inflame an already tense relationship with Pakistan, the Indian government has revealed publicly for the first time a dossier of evidence presented to Islamabad linking the leader of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, the group blamed for the Mumbai attacks. The co-ordinated attacks by armed men on several locations across India's financial capital last November left at least 170 people dead and hundreds wounded. The attacks have strained relations between New Delhi and Islamabad. Now, in an exclusive interview with Al Jazeera's Hamish Macdonald, P Chidambaram, India's interior minister, says Pakistan is "deliberately" stifling the investigation by failing to follow up on the evidence. Chidambaram produced documents detailing names, times and locations of alleged meetings involving Hafiz Saeed, the Lashkar-e-Taiba chief, and those who went on to conduct the attacks. Pakistan has repeatedly refused to re-arrest Saeed because it says India has failed to produce convincing evidence. Beyond that, the dossier chronicles India's efforts in recent years to persuade Pakistan to investigate suspects involved in attacks in India and to close down "terrorist training camps" inside Pakistani territory. In the final pages, India demands that Pakistan hand over "conspirators" to face trial in India and comply with its promise to stop armed groups from functioning inside its territory. "There is enough evidence to show that, given the sophistication and military ...
- Arthur Laffer: Big Government Is Stifling The American Spirit In this video taken out a debate titled "Arthur Laffer: Big Government Is Stifling The American Spirit". Arthur Laffer (for the motion) repeats his well-known views that government intervention in everything from economic policy to health care is rewarding the "takers," and not the "makers," stifling innovators, entrepreneurs and business owners. Laffer argues against the current taxing system, the massive bail out of banks and other corporations, the increase in tax rates, the inflated defense budget over the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the unparalleled debt incurred by Medicare, Medicaid and welfare payments.. And although as a self-proclaimed social democrat (not with a capital D and certainly not with a capital S) I disagree with some of his assertions, I cannot but admit that his points were the most intelligent, non-inflammatory and persuasive like always (if you haven't read his articles. You should). With Americans losing their jobs and scrambling to save after declines in the real estate and stock markets, the can-do spirit that embodies the United States is not as pervasive as it has been in the past. But to what degree does big government impact American optimism? On one side, people argue that those who are creating jobs are inherently wealthier and subject to higher income taxes. But others argue that big government has helped rescue free-market capitalism. It helped create stimulus, which in turn saved the auto industry from bankruptcy and allowed ...

- Are External Issues Stifling The Economy? Well, we are a couple of percentage points lower today in the equity markets and unfortunately your administration points the finger at the tsunami in Japan and other external issues that are stifling the economy. It is always someone else's fault and not your administration. It doesn't matter if you are a Republican or a Democrat, this is YOUR economy and YOUR administration has to accept responsibility for it. You have spent trillions of tax payer's money on unneeded and unwanted legislation, and it is never going to help the country or create jobs. You came into office on "Hope and Change"... America got neither. Do you really want to help the country and ensure your reelection? I think you should turn over the billion dollars you are amassing for your reelection campaign to the treasury. I would see that as a very positive gesture and it would likely get you reelected.

- Is Bureaucracy Stifling the Local Food Movement? Complete video at: fora.tv Author and farmer Joel Salatin argues that the bureaucracy of current food safety regulations effectively favor large-scale agribusiness at the expense of innovative small farms and artisan food producers. ----- American farmer Joel Salatin, the star of the documentary Food Inc, has become a "pin up boy" for the growing food "re-localization" movement. On a recent visit to Canberra, he gives his take on food politics after a lifetime of experience in natural and profitable farming. Salatin came to prominence with his ideas about creating abundance on a family farm. His methods include learning how to mimic nature and arrange the facets of farm life so they don't operate as independent operations, but rather a system of "intertwined cycles." Disregarding conventional wisdom, the Salatins planted trees, built huge compost piles, dug ponds, moved cows daily with portable electric fencing, and utilized portable sheltering systems to produce all their animals on perennial prairie polycultures. Salatin believes we're now living through an age of a "food inquisition", not unlike the religious inquisition of 500 years ago, where the powers behind industrialized agriculture and food production are putting heretical farmers like him "on the rack." In this talk, organized by Milkwood Permaculture in association with Slow Food Canberra, Salatin lays out twelve false assumptions peddled by the "inquisitors," which sustainable farming methods counter ...

- Dark Energy Stifling Structure Growth For the first time, astronomers have clearly seen the effects of "dark energy" on the most massive collapsed objects in the universe using NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory. By tracking how dark energy has stifled the growth of galaxy clusters and combining this with previous studies, scientists have obtained the best clues yet about what dark energy is and what the destiny of the universe could be. This work, which took years to complete, is separate from other methods of dark energy research such as supernovas. These new X-ray results provide a crucial independent test of dark energy, long sought by scientists, which depends on how gravity competes with accelerated expansion in the growth of cosmic structures. Techniques based on distance measurements, such as supernova work, do not have this special sensitivity. Scientists think dark energy is a form of repulsive gravity that now dominates the universe, although they have no clear picture of what it actually is. Understanding the nature of dark energy is one of the biggest problems in science. Possibilities include the cosmological constant, which is equivalent to the energy of empty space. Other possibilities include a modification in general relativity on the largest scales, or a more general physical field. To help decide between these options, a new way of looking at dark energy is required. It is accomplished by observing how cosmic acceleration affects the growth of galaxy clusters over time. "This result could be ...

- Thank-you sneezes: Inducing, stifling, holdbacks, and more! Well, on account of the TOTALLY AWESOME response I got to my last video (seriously, you guys are great), I decided to make and post the next one as soon as possible. I responded to a couple requests as well, hope you like. I did run into technical difficulties, though. I recorded a really good clip with Photobooth, like last time. But when I went to listen to it, there was no audio. I think I might have accidentally covered up the mic... who knows. Anyway, I was PISSED about that. I ended up using GarageBand instead of Photobooth for this clip, and I must confess that this time I did edit it some. It's just too tempting. After all, my clips are long enough as it is without you guys having to listen to dead air. Unfortunately, I had already sneezed a lot when I made this clip (on account of losing the last one), so it's not as good as it could be. But hey, I tried. =/ As before, suggestions, requests, and constructive criticism are welcomed, but meanness is a waste of your time and mine. Enjoy! :) with photo from
