  • PETER RAGNAR / THE RAZOR'S EDGE: Great Starts and Poor Finishes? The Razor's Edge Newsletter For People Who Live Life in the Pursuit of Excellence: Great Starts and Poor Finishes? by Peter Ragnar I still remember running on the skillet hot pavement. The temperatures were in the mid 90s as the gun went off starting the Jacksonville River Run. Three quarters into the race, I wondered if my elite Nike waffle trainers were sticking to the road surface. The huge throng of participants were behind me. Keeping my cadence and stride, a runner from Atlanta had matched my pace for the last seven miles. As the hot air scorched my lungs, the grade steepened as it lead up to the big bridge that crossed the Saint John's River. My confidence began to grow. You see, I'd driven down from West Virginia to race in flat Florida. I'd been putting in one hundred mile training runs per week in the mountain state so, I figured I'd shake off my competitor at the bridge. He matched me step for step, up and over, soon we were leaving the bridge behind us. I questioned as my mind began to weaken, "can I stay with him?" Just when I felt my pace was going to drop off, he yelled to me, "Go for it, pal!" and dropped behind me. Then he shouted, "Good luck!" There were no other runners in sight as I ran the last half mile along the riverbank lined with spectators. The stranger had given me one of my personal best finishes. His encouragement gave me a renewed surge of energy. So many came to the race with great hopes and great starts. Some walked to the finish, some ...
  • Wilfred Owen - Spring Offensive (War Poetry) Wilfred Owen MC, was an English and Welsh poet and soldier of the First World War. He was born in Oswestry, Shropshire on 18 March 1893. This poem is believed to be one of the last he wrote, before his death at the Battle of Sambre on 4 November 1918, a week before the war ended. He was 25. I put some music behind incase anyone prefers to read with music. One piece is from the film Romeo and Juliet, and this instrumental version is by Craig Armstrong. The other at the end is from the film Oliver Twist, and is by Rachel Portman. Incase anyone is interested, the picture of clouds in the background is by the 18th centuary artist John Constable. And the final picture, is a photograph of Wilfred Owen. (I don't own anything used here) Here's the text of the poem: Halted against the shade of a last hill They fed, and eased of pack-loads, were at ease; And leaning on the nearest chest or knees, Carelessly slept. But many there stood still To face the stark, blank sky beyond the ridge, Knowing their feet had come to the end of the world. Marvelling they stood, and watched the long grass swirled By the May breeze, murmurous with wasp and midge; And though the summer oozed into their veins Like an injected drug for their bodies' pains, Sharp on their souls hung the imminent ridge of grass, Fearfully flashed the sky's mysterious glass. Hour after hour they ponder the warm field And the far valley behind, where the buttercups Had blessed with gold their slow boots coming up; When even ...

  • Grand Canyon Grand Canyon The principal consensus among geologists is that the Colorado River basin (of which the Grand Canyon is a part) has developed in the past 40 million years and that the Grand Canyon itself is probably less than five to six million years old (with most of the downcutting occurring in the last two million years). The result of all this erosion is one of the most complete geologic columns on the planet. The major geologic exposures in Grand Canyon range in age from the 2 billion year old Vishnu Schist at the bottom of the Inner Gorge to the 230 million year old Kaibab Limestone on the Rim. Interestingly, there is a gap of about one billion years between the stratum that is about 500 million years old and the lower level, which is about 1.5 billion years old. That indicates a period of erosion between two periods of deposition. Many of the formations were deposited in warm shallow seas, near-shore environments (such as beaches), and swamps as the seashore repeatedly advanced and retreated over the edge of a proto-North America. Major exceptions include the Permian Coconino Sandstone, which most (though not all)[3][4][5][6][7] geologists claim was laid down as sand dunes in a desert, and several parts of the Supai Group. The great depth of the Grand Canyon and especially the height of its strata (most of which formed below sea level) can be attributed to 5000 to 10000 feet (1500 to 3000 m) of uplift of the Colorado Plateau, starting about 65 million years ago ...

Thankfully, the ride in the hired minibus there was really quick, and we were on the trail by 5am. It was pitch black, so imagine our annoyance, when we found that of the 10 people on the tramp, only 4 of us had thought it would be a good idea to bring a torch. And, as our torch (thanks Secret Santa, that was an inspired gift - we know who you are!!) was the only one in the group that lit more than 2 feet in front of us, Sam had to walk along and try and shine the torch at the feet of 5 people in front of us. Clearly these people never went to Cub scouts or its equivalent. The situation almost become farcical when our leader's torch failed, and he had to borrow ours, so we all stumbled along in the dark. GRRRRRRRR. Thankfully, it began to get light enough to see something by about 6am. The first hour or so was, apart from the light issue, was relatively easy, as the path meandered up through farm land ...

  • How To Drive "Relief Mail" in RailWorks The Class 86 is a relatively realistic - and therefore relatively difficult - locomotive to drive in RailWorks. I wrote the "Relief Mail" scenario and made this demonstration video to help players understand how to get the most out of it. The scenario can be downloaded from UKTS: The power controller on the 86 does not directly control power as on a diesel locomotive. Instead, it is used to adjust a "tap changer", which applies voltage to the motors according to it's position. This tap-changer has 38 positions called notches, which are indicated on the black percentage meter to the right of the ammeters. The central position on the power controller holds the tap-changer in position. The positions immediately each side of that are used to nudge it one notch up or down at a time. You can use these "notch up" and "notch down" positions about once a second. For large power changes, there are the "Run Up", "Run Down" and "Off" positions. At low speeds only a little voltage is needed to get a lot of tractive effort, while at higher speeds the upper end of the voltage range becomes useful. As modelled and demonstrated, you should always use only Notch 1 to start the train from rest. There are, unfortunately, some glitches in the video, caused by the strain on my computer of running RailWorks and FRAPS capture at the same time. Mostly these show as stuttering and pausing when new scenery is loaded, but at one point the power controller flies into "Run Up ...

  • Part Five - Travel Tales - Climbing Kilimanjaro June 6 - Day 5 on the mountain Today is the day! Michael, Terry, Felix and Jacabo step out into the cold and darkness at 00:15. Order is determined - Felix to lead, followed by Michael, Terry and Jacabo. Terry and Michael have made a pact. If one needs to turn back the other will continue on. The clear night sky is full of stars; what a sight - no pollution at this elevation. Head lamps are switched on and were underway. Focus for Michael and Terry is the lower leg and the feet of the climber in front - the area illuminated by the headlamp. Terry concentrates on a mantra to keep his mind positive ... "One less step, one less step" each time stepping into the spot just vacated by Michaels foot. We zig-zag up a steep field of shale and sand step by step for two to three hours. The loose footing is tiring. Felix only allows brief stops before urging us forward. Terrys hands are very cold - wrong gloves. Around 03:00 we reach Hans Meyer Cave and find it occupied by the Slovakian couple and their guides ... we dont see them again ... assume they turned back. A point of light appears above us on the mountain ... it is coming down towards us. Scree gives way to huge boulders and more solid footing, although the incline has noticeably steepened. The single light is still moving down. "Pole, pole." The light moves even closer. Who could it be and why would they be coming down at this hour? It nears. It is one of the two guides with the Dutch climbers. If a guide has to turn back ...
  • "Mendenhall Glacier Hike" Egatfield's photos around Juneau, Alaska, United States A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Juneau, Alaska, United States by TravelPod blogger Egatfield titled "Mendenhall Glacier Hike" Egatfield's travel blog entry: "(Sean here.) By far the best hike of the trip was the West Glacier trail at the Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau. We started with limited time as we had a 2pm appointment at the ferry terminal to depart for Petersburg, but knew we had to get Kaia some exercise before locking her on the car deck for most of the next 24 hours (ferry life is an interesting piece in and of itself which we will discuss more later). The first mile of the hike proved to be much like the others: dense, mossy trees with an overbearing cool damp feel. At mile two, however, we started climbing and things became far more interesting. Sections of the trail steepened to stone staircases that we clambered up and down until we finally met another hiker. "Have you guys hiked on this trail before?" the lady asked with a cautious look on her face. "No," I responded. "Does it get pretty hairy from here?" "I made it about 5 more minutes up the trail, but that's about it" she answered. We continued forward with renewed interest based on our brief interaction when we came to the section of the trail that we figured was the stopping point for our fellow traveler . . . a knotted rope leading up at 15 foot sheer rock face. We were not about to let this end the trail after we had already dropped into unknown depths of a glacier crevasse, so we ...

Just let me burn the night away Oh baby, let me burn the night away By thinking of the simple things you say to me That get me true the day You keep me wide awake You keep me wide awake So don't look back The hour glass is running empty You've got me buried with your every move You're fine line tapped me with a loss of memory I'm right beside you in an empty room If the whole word told me I should disappear Could I fall right next to you? Just let me burn the night away Oh baby, let me burn the night away By thinking of the simple things you say to me That get me true the day And it's so hard to catch your feelings When you always run away You keep me wide awake You keep me wide awake You're making it hard For me to just start over like we're new Oh, the whole world told me I should disappear 'Cause I'm falling in love with you Just let me burn the night away Oh baby, let me burn the night away By thinking of the simple things you say to me That get me true the day And it's so hard to catch your feelings When you always run away You keep me wide awake You keep me wide awake

Some peaks resemble those around Mordor in The Lord of the Rings. Few passes exist in the area because of its remoteness and steepness. Those that do exist approach 16000 feet in height--the land of high winds, rime ice, hail, and snow. This was the location for our next film shooting. Gomba and I were accompanied by one of the staff from the Nature Reserve on this trek. Unfortunately Jonathan had succumbed to the altitude so was unable to join us: "it can happen to the best of us." To reach the pass, we headed to the northernmost valley of the central stream flowing through the heart of Baimaxueshan Nature Reserve. Like the Yongdui valley, the nomads in this valley had also left; abandoned huts scattered throughout the valley, a mix of forests, bogs, shrublands, and pastures. Along the way, the trail came and went, crossing streams on precarious logs, dissipating within bogs, and clarifying near nomadic huts. In one bog, I sank to my knees in cold mud. Luckily I didn't fall off the log crossing the raging stream. "SURVIVOR" would do well here; or, then again, maybe not as tropical areas seem more suited to their tastes. At the end of the valley, we reached a terminal moraine, sparsely vegetated ...

Stephen, Rikke and I sorted out our plans to climb Mount Kinabalu, and we spent the rest of the day exploring KK, which is the closest thing to a resort town that I've seen in Borneo. Wednesday 30th July We had another quiet day today - it was pleasant but I'm sure it wouldn't make exciting reading, so I'll skip the details of where we walked and which cafes we whiled away our time in. I've developed a bit of a cold and my body is craving rest in a warm bed (I'm so bloody sick of air-con right now, but sleeping in dorms really takes away the element of choice where that's concerned). Thursday 31st July This morning Rikke, Stephen and I got up shortly before 6am to catch our lift to Kinabalu Park. I felt very sorry for our chatty Dutch companion in the car because none of us were at our most sociable despite his numerous and persistant attempts to draw us into conversation. We arrived at Park Headquarters a few hours later, all feeling a bit more awake by this point. I had enjoyed watching Mt Kinabalu loom over us during the car journey, getting larger as we drew closer. At headquarters we met our guide, I can't remember his name but I thought it was quite funny that while all the other guides looked smart but ...

  • Restormel castle , Cornwall Restormel Castle is situated on the River Fowey near Lostwithiel, Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. It is one of the four Norman castles of Cornwall, the others being Launceston, Tintagel and Trematon. It was built in 1100 in the typical motte and bailey style and is a perfect example of military architecture of its period, and one of the finest in England. The castle belonged to the Cardinhams in the 12th century, until Andrew de Cardinham's daughter married Thomas de Tracey, who owned the castle until 1264, after which it went to Simon de Montfort and to Henry III's brother, Richard of Cornwall. Richard died in 1271, and his son Edmund in 1300. From 1337 it became one of the 17 Antiqua maneria of the Duchy of Cornwall. Restormel Castle is now in the care of English Heritage and is open to the public. The castle was built behind a 17 metre moat, upon slopes which were artificially steepened. Restormel has seen action only once during its long history, when Charles I's forces drove out the Parliamentarian garrison during the Civil War.

Finally - a relatively late model Camry with working A/C for the ride to Nyaungshwe, the major town near the lake. The trip is listed as just 11 km., but seems to take forever on the poor, crowded roads. We checked in to the Gold Star Hotel and went out in search of a Mr. Atun to see about a trek into the hill country. Debbie was determined not to miss her last chance at seeing hill tribes after losing out on Namhsam. We found him an entertaining character, surprisingly irreverent for this culture. We booked a two-day trek to start next morning (just $20 each incl. meals and accommodation), and an immediate afternoon boat tour of the lake for $8 each. We paid a little above the usual rate to get a shorter tour. Sound strange? We'd been tipped to request this arrangement and skip the usual tourist traps where guides get referral fees to bring prospective customers to the shops. We concentrated on lake activities and only a few select businesses. They included a goldsmith operation and a special place that weaves silk and produces a unique material from lotus leaf fibre. We also got to see cheroot manufacture. A cheroot is a small cigar-type item of chopped ...

We hadn't done a lot of research of the Nelson Lakes area in Canada as we had focused on getting our first two hikes in Tongariro National Park and Tasmania (Southcoast/Port Davey) organized. We weren't sure what the weather would be like on the south island, nor whether we would have injuries etc. which cause us to have to change our hiking plans. Thus we decided to hike a more straightforward type of loop, starting in St. Arnaud, hiking south along Lake Rotoiti to the Travers Saddle and up to Blue Lake, crossing Moss Pass and heading north down the d'Urville Valley to D'Urville Hut then Sabine Hut, and then up to Angeles and out via Robert Ridge back to St. Arnaud. We walked from Ashley's house around 7:30am to catch a city bus to downtown Christchurch to catch the K-bus to Nelson Lakes. There was a boisterous ...

Gingerjazz's travel blog entry: "We left Bukittinggi with hopes of scaling the mighty Gunung kerinci in Jambi Province. After a pleasant (almost luxury by Indonesian standards) bus ride we were thrown out at Kersic Tua. This small town is situated along the side of a road and stretches for around a mile. Tea plantations take up the other side of the road, then a mile back from the road Gunung Kerinci towers menacingly in the distance. We woke up fairly early by traveler standards and made our way to meet our guide Pani. He bundled his pack onto his back and we hopped into the car that dropped us off at the trail head. We walked the first few flat kilometers in sunshine and our spirits were high. But by the second break point the rain had started to fall and we had to make quick time to the lunch spot where a tarpaulin had been erected as a make-shift shelter. Lunch was a box of chicken, rice and egg. All cold of course! We had another 3 hours walk to the camp site near the summit so we ate lunch quickly in order to avoid walking in the dark at the steepest part of the volcano. As we left the lunch shelter the trail steepened quickly and was obviously more strenuous than the 4 hours of walking that preceded it. Paths were made entirely out of vertical roots and you needed to scramble and climb to make you way through. The rain had ...

  • Falling Debris - Pineapple Express - December 19, 2010 Photos Uploaded! On the week of December 12, 2010 a "Pineapple Express" weather pattern effected most all of California stretching from the coasts all the way inland. On December 17th, the system finally began to severely effect the southern California area and by the 19th, many flash floods, debris flows, and rock slides were witnessed across most of the southland. This footage was taken the afternoon of the 19th alongside Carbon Canyon Rd. in Brea, CA. A severely over-steepened hill slope (as seen in the video) eventually became over-saturated after close to 4 inches worth of rainfall had fallen over the course of 3 days. Crews were sweeping the highway with about 3 plows to try and keep rocks, mud, and other debris clear from the roadways. This system is expected to effect the area throughout this week, so stay tuned for more footage!
  • DriveAbout 56 - Grand Canyon la seconda visuale del Grand Canyon, stanchi ed accaldati ma molto felici di poter apprezzare una meraviglia della natura come questa. Major exceptions include the Permian Coconino Sandstone, which most geologists interpret as an aeolian sand dune deposit and several parts of the Supai Group. The great depth of the Grand Canyon and especially the height of its strata (most of which formed below sea level) can be attributed to 5000 to 10000 feet (1500 to 3000 m) of uplift of the Colorado Plateau, starting about 65 million years ago (during the Laramide Orogeny). This uplift has steepened the stream gradient of the Colorado River and its tributaries, which in turn has increased their speed and thus their ability to cut through rock (see the elevation summary of the Colorado River for present conditions). Weather conditions during the ice ages also ...
