Cliff Robertson and George Chakiris star in this dumbed-down version of The Guns of Navarone. During World War II, the story concerns a Scandinavian underground leader, Erik Bergman (George Chakiris), who reports to British authorities the location of a German V2 fuel plant. As is the case in most World War II action films, the plant is in an impregnable location -- beneath an overhanging cliff at the end of a highly defended fjord. The only way the British can hope to destroy the plant is by collapsing the cliff on top of it. In order to do that, light Mosquito aircraft must be utilized. This is the job assigned to Wing Commander Roy Grant's (Cliff Robertson) 633 Squadron. In order to assist Grant in his air attack, Bergman attempts a simultaneous ground attack, but the ground attack fails, and Bergman is captured by the Germans. When he is tortured in their efforts to uncover the RAF plans, Bergman may not be able to withhold the top-secret information. Howard Koch and James Clavell adapted their screenplay from Frederick E. Smith's novel, reportedly based on a true story. RAF Eagle Squadron Prior to the United States' entry into WWII many Americans volunteered for service in the RAF and RCAF. The Battle of Britain raged from May though October 1940. The stories of the RAF pilots flying their Hurricanes and Spitfires inspired many to look into joining the RAF. Of the thousands that volunteered, 244 American pilots were to fly for the Eagle Squadrons; Number 71, 121, and 133 Squadrons of the Royal Air Force Fighter Command. From the time the first Eagle Squadron was formed in September 1940 until all three squadrons were disbanded and incorporated into the USAAF in September 1942, they destroyed 73 1/2 German planes while 77 American and 5 British members were killed. The basic requirements for those interested in joining the Eagles were a high school diploma, between 20 and 31 years of age, eyesight that was 20/40 correctable to 20/20, and 300 hours of certified flying time. These requirements were somewhat less strict than those required for service in the USAAF which is the reason some of the pilots joined the RAF or the RCAF in the first place. The reason most of the pilots volunteered was quite simply for adventure. Leo Nomis wrote "I think that all of us, with very few exceptions were simply adventurers and romanticists, and perhaps idealists." Robert Patterson noted "I joined the RAF not primarily for patriotic reasons. We all knew a war was coming. I used this as a quick way for some flying excitement." SNES UN Squadron (Area 88) Taking their rather sucessfull CPS1 arcade game Area 88 and reinventing it in the Super Nintendo hardware, Capcom made more then a mere port, just like in Ghoul'n' Ghosts. Regretfully loosing the simultaneous 2 player mode, this SNES offering offers a much more deep single player experience, with more planes, levels and giving the players the choice of which mission to tackle. Renamed UN Squadron outside of Japan, It's amusing to see that the characters and names of the anime protagonists were left unchanged. Area 88 is my favorite fighter aircraft anime and although I had played previously to having my SNES on the Amiga version, this is the definitive version of the game for me. Level 1 with Shin Kazama on a F8E Crusader.

No 452 Australian Squadron No. 452 Squadron was a Royal Australian Air Force fighter unit formed during World War II, in England. The squadron flew Supermarine Spitfires for the entire war, initially over the UK and ***-occupied Europe. The squadron was later based in Australia and the Netherlands East Indies. Keith "Bluey" Truscott was perhaps the best-known of the squadron's fliers. Although it was an RAAF unit, while it was in Europe, 452 Sqn also had some British personnel, from the Royal Air Force as well as other British Commonwealth air forces and other nationalities. One of these was the Irish ace Paddy Finucane. A number of Polish pilots also flew with the squadron and proved to be formidable pilots, despite occasional language problems. No. 452 Squadron rapidly developed a formidable reputation in operations against German forces. They were involved in many different kinds of operations. One of the most unusual was escorting a bomber that — with the co-operation of the Germans — dropped an artificial leg by parachute into Europe, for the use of the British ace Douglas Bader, who was a prisoner of war. The bombers flew on to bomb a factory. Another notable operation was the attack on the pocket battleships Scharnhorst, Prince Eugen and Gneisenau which were attempting the "Channel Dash", from their French harbour. Allied aircraft inflicted severe damage to these ships, despite intense anti-aircraft fire. The squadron did not lose an aircraft or suffer any damage to it on this occasion ...
UN Squadron Stage 8 - Gamer (SNES) Stage 8 (Canyon) in UN Squadron (SNES) on Gamer mode. This level is hard enough as it is, but what is worse is the boss actually bugged up. Not only is it extremely rare for him to stay on screen 100% of the time, but his bombs actually started shooting two sets of missiles about halfway. A500 Battle Squadron - Intro + Demo My very first Amiga game! In fact,I bought it even before I had my Amiga 500. This 1989 spiritual sucessor to Hybris had everything: Great graphics, good gameplay, amazing music... it truly was an arcade @ home experience. The two player coop mode made this even sweeter. It was later converted to Sega Megadrive/Genesis by EA, in 1992.
