She had no idea why, but he wouldnt stop! She had begged, pleaded, cried, and even screamed for him to just stop, go, leave her alone, let her be, give her peace!!! But he would only torture her more. ~^x*x^~ Quinn ran out of the elevator once the doors had opened, and sped down the hall, pausing again to listen for the scream. There it was! The scream, and then a voice following it, one which was so familiar it sent chills up Quinns spine. What do you see? asked a young, male voice, gentle but very forceful, with a cruel undertone which Quinn had never heard in his own voice. Gathering his resolve, Quinn opened the door to his left, which was were the scream had come from, and entered an intricate laboratory, in the center of which was a young girl confined and strapped to a gurney, IVs stuck in her forearms and sensors around her tiny, terrified face, which was wet with a thousand tears. Symbols, stars, burning, turning, spinning, wheels of frost The lab-coated scientist bending over her looked up as the doors opened, and his blue-gray eyes narrowed as he saw the decrepit intruder. What are you doing here? he demanded. His brown hair, the same color as Quinns, was brushed back, flat across the top of his head, and his face had the same smooth tan as the other, Which one are you? Quinn stared down his double just as hard. Thats not important ...
  • Towards the Abolition of Suffering - David Pearce [UKH+] (6/7) Reflections on the Abolitionist Project The Transhumanist Declaration advocates "the well-being of all sentience, including humans, non-human animals, and any future artificial intellects, modified life forms, or other intelligences to which technological and scientific advance may give rise." Yet is "the well-being of all sentience" serious science - or just utopian dreaming? What does such a commitment entail? On what kind of realistic timeframe might we command enough computational power to police an entire ecosystem? In this talk, the speaker wants to review recent progress in understanding the neurobiology of pleasure, pain and our core emotions. Can mastery of our reward circuity ever deliver socially responsible, intelligent bliss rather than crude wireheading? He also wants to examine and respond to criticisms of the abolitionist project that have been levelled over the past decade - and set out the biggest challenges, as he sees them, to the prospect of a totally cruelty-free world. Link to the transhumanist declaration (2009 version): ** About the speaker David Pearce is an independent researcher and vegan animal activist based in Brighton UK. • Gaspar Sanz "Granduque & Canarios" The Granduque (of Florence) is a Italian origin but remained popular in Spain long after passing out of fashion in Italy. The granduque was a set dance which became a ground for differencias in the seven***th century. The canarios was another "ethnic" dance intended to represent the "shuffling" dances of the Canary Islanders. It is generally accepted that composer Gaspar Sanz was born on April 4, 1640, in Calanda (province of Teruel) in the region of Aragon, Spain. As a young man, he received a bachelor of theology degree and subsequently took the vows of Holy Orders from the University of Salamanca. But the spirituality of music would become a second vocation for Sanz and he journeyed to Italy to study music with Cristofaro Caresana and Lelio Colista, as well as (speculatively) Orazio Benevoli and Pietro Andrea Ziani. Upon his return to Spain, he pursued literature, religion, and music in equal measure with, respectively, a translation of Bartoli (1678), a eulogy to Pope Innocent XI (1681), and his musical magnum opus in the three-volume Instrucción de música sobre la guitarra Española. His musical prowess soon came to loom over his other achievements, becoming widely regarded as the foremost guitar theorist of his day as well as private instructor of guitar to Don Juan of Austria, the dedicatee of his Instrucción. A complete musician, Sanz was also organist to the viceroy of Napoles. He is believed to have died in Madrid in 1710. By the time Sanz began his work, the ...

  • Bishopsgate Tower - "The Pinnacle" - London Forum thread: More information: * At 288 metres, the Bishopsgate Tower will form the centrepiece of London's financial district. It will be over 100 metres taller than the City's current tallest building, Tower 42 (the former NatWest Tower), and one of the tallest skyscrapers in Europe. * Plans for a tower on this site have been around since 2002. A previous design by Helmut Jahn was scrapped following concerns over the base and crown, and its effect on views from Fleet Street. The revised design - by architects Kohn Pederson Fox - is more sleek and elegantly proportioned, and is intended to complement the neighbouring proposals such as the Leadenhall Building. * A planning application was submitted in June 2005. A revised planning application with a 19m height reduction was submitted and given final approval in April 2006. In November 2006, the developers secured funding for the project from Arab Investments. Current Status: Early construction is underway. It is confirmed that the tower will be built speculatively. Brookfield have been signed up as subcontractors for the steel and cladding, and are expected to take over the site from July 2009. Completion of the tower is scheduled for 2011.

  • The myth of conflict between Science & Religion (from WhatisMedia) It's amazing how many people dislike truth & facts. But, nearly all scholars agree that the Bible was vitally integrated with science for millennia & that it is just a myth propagated by a few severely biased people that they are enemies. Dr. James Hannam has a degree in physics, a Ph.D. in history from Oxford and London universities and a Ph.D. in the history of science from Cambridge University. He writes, "Until very recently, almost everyone believed scientific progress has been held back by religion. But today's historians have realized that, if anything, the popular perception is the opposite of the truth." He lists many other leading historians of science who agree in his book as well as examples of how religion helped science progress. You can read some short samples at this website: esp. see "The Mythical Conflict between Science and Religion" In 2011, Dr. Hannam published, "The Genesis of Science: How the Christian Middle Ages Launched the Scientific Revolution" proving great cooperation between science and Christianity. The New Scientist calls it "Well-researched and hugely enjoyable". Ruth Francis, Head of Press for Nature says, "This period has been poorly documented, and I think this makes Hannam's account all the more extraordinary. It is engaging, informative and I heartily recommend it." Nature You can read some short biographies of many of the world's greatest creation scientists from 1000-2000AD and how the Bible ...

  • Stopping the Coming Ice Age (Part 6) 1988 Watch the full program: Global warming is the increase in the average temperature of Earth's near-surface air and oceans since the mid-20th century and its projected continuation. Global surface temperature increased 0.74 ± 0.18 °C (1.33 ± 0.32 °F) between the start and the end of the 20th century. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concludes that most of the observed temperature increase since the middle of the 20th century was caused by increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases resulting from human activity such as fossil fuel burning and deforestation. The IPCC also concludes that variations in natural phenomena such as solar radiation and volcanism produced most of the warming from pre-industrial times to 1950 and had a small cooling effect afterward. These basic conclusions have been endorsed by more than 40 scientific societies and academies of science, including all of the national academies of science of the major industrialized countries. Climate model projections summarized in the latest IPCC report indicate that the global surface temperature is likely to rise a further 1.1 to 6.4 °C (2.0 to 11.5 °F) during the 21st century. The uncertainty in this estimate arises from the use of models with differing sensitivity to greenhouse gas concentrations and the use of differing estimates of future greenhouse gas emissions. Some other uncertainties include how warming and related changes will vary ...

  • Towards the Abolition of Suffering - David Pearce [UKH+] (3/7) Reflections on the Abolitionist Project The Transhumanist Declaration advocates "the well-being of all sentience, including humans, non-human animals, and any future artificial intellects, modified life forms, or other intelligences to which technological and scientific advance may give rise." Yet is "the well-being of all sentience" serious science - or just utopian dreaming? What does such a commitment entail? On what kind of realistic timeframe might we command enough computational power to police an entire ecosystem? In this talk, the speaker wants to review recent progress in understanding the neurobiology of pleasure, pain and our core emotions. Can mastery of our reward circuity ever deliver socially responsible, intelligent bliss rather than crude wireheading? He also wants to examine and respond to criticisms of the abolitionist project that have been levelled over the past decade - and set out the biggest challenges, as he sees them, to the prospect of a totally cruelty-free world. • Narciso Yepes.mp4 A historical piano sounds like a harp or a guitar. Also the broadwood square piano do so. Therefore it is a very good practice and a very good kind to hear the possibilities of such an historical instrument, to perform guitar-music on it. But to play guitar-music on a piano, is really difficult. When the fingers roll down the guitar-strings on piano they have to repetate as fast, as possible to bring the original sound to the listeners. Martin Dalhimer performes a lot of guitar-music to his concert-visitors so they will be able to mention the secial sound of the broadwood1830. In this video Martin Dalheimer is performing a well known song of Narciso Yepes who (November 14, 1927 May 3, 1997) was a Spanish guitarist. In 1952 a song Yepes wrote when he was a young boy became the theme to the film Forbidden Games (Jeux interdits) by René Clément. However, the piece, Romance, has often been speculatively attributed to other authors, without conclusive evidence that can stand up to scientific scrutiny, and despite the fact that Yepes confessed to being its composer. In the credits of the film Jeux Interdits, however, Romance is credited as "Traditional: arranged - Narciso Yepes."

  • Katie Cole "Lost Inside a Moment" Aug. 20, 2010 iTunes Release Show. Katie Cole was playing gigs in her hometown of Melbourne, Australia when she received an email from producer Howard Willing. At first, she thought this was a friend playing a joke on her for Willing was (and still is) one of her favorite music producers Willing has worked with Sheryl Crow, Ok Go, Smashing Pumpkins, Macy Gray, Cheap Trick, The Counting Crows, Liz Phair and many others. Though after a few more persistent emails and phone calls, Katie was convinced. She then came to Los Angeles where Willing speculatively produced and invested in Katie's EP which was released earlier this summer.

I played with the original Alex Harvey band - The Kansas City Counts - in 1957. I was never really a rocker, and Alex didn't become The Sensational Alex Harvey till I left. That maybe says something ... The girl he's looking speculatively across to - on his left - is shortly going to lose more than her big boyfriend, if I knew Alex ... But he was always sensational to me - a unique human being. There will never be another like him. RIP in Rock Heaven, Alex. Say hello to Elvis, Jacques Brel, Buddy Holly - and Django - for me.

  • poetics of plasticity: attention (1) continuing with my series on personal plasticity... in a nutshell: while our (habitual) attitudes, tacit narratives and beliefs shape the field of attention, our receptivity frames it /can reframe it, basically this is the basis on which I speculatively propose that we are capable of self-initiating stress-reduction... of course, in discussing the habits and dynamics of attention specifically as it might relate to stress I do ignore quite significant levels of bottom-up processes involved in its assembly... needless to say, critical and complementary remarks are more than welcome, on a sidenote: after I recorded this I went to have my lunch and during my lunch what I was preoccupied by was not the food and tasting and eating it carefully but rather whether I had said everything in the video that I wanted to say, too bad for my digestion I guess... yet another example of how our commitments orchestrate (for good or ill) the flow of our attention...
  • Rudimentary Peni- Better Not Born It seemed like a damn futile business to keep on living. No more tutors - high school next September which would probably be a devilish bore, since one couldn't be as free and easy as one had been during brief snatches at the neighbourly Slater Avenue school...Oh hell! Why not slough off consciousness altogether?...The whole life of man was a mere cosmic second -so I couldn't be missing much. The method was the only trouble. I didn't like messy exits, and dignified ones were hard to find. Really good poisons were hard to get -those in my chemical laboratory (I reestablished this institution in the basement of the new place) were crude and painful. Bullets were spattery and unreliable. Hanging was ignominious. Daggers were messy unless one could arrange to open a wrist in a bowl of warm water -and even that had its drawbacks despite good Roman precedent. Falls from a cliff were positively vulgar in view of the probable state of the remains. Well what tempted me most was the warm, shallow reed-grown Barrington River down the east shore of the bay. I used to go there on my bicycle and look speculatively at it. (That summer I was always on my bicycle wishing to be away from home as much as possible since my abode reminded me of the home I had lost). How easy it would be to wade among the bushes and lie face down in the warm water till oblivion came. There would be a certain gurgling or choking unpleasantness at first, but it would soon be over. Then, the long, peaceful night ...

  • Beautifully Broken ((Chapter 66))-M/M{part8}- Beautifully Broken Chapter 66 ~Joe~ I rolled over and smiled at Bridget. She looked absolutely amazing this morning. I ran my fingers through her hair and moved to kiss her shoulder. "Wake up love.." i whisper moving my lips north to her neck. She groans and sighs turning over a little. "Good morning." she smiles opening her eyes to reveal the ocean. I just look at her for a second, staring at whats next to me. "Come here." i open my arms and she moves into them. I cuddle with her and kiss the top of her head. "Something wrong?" she asks. "Not at all." i smile pecking her lips. She gets up and walks into the closet. "I have to go meet up with my mom and Leah..you wanna come?" she asks me. "Why not.." i get up and walk into the closet. I search for shorts and throw a pair on and then i find a shirt and pull that on too. "BAILEY I GOT IT!" she ran in attacking me against the wall. "Got..what?" i gasp trying to catch my breath. She points to the puppy at the foot of our bed. "BAILEY!!!!" she calls. The dog jumps and runs over to us. "Oh..wow.." "Perfect..Hey, Bailey!" i bend down ruffling the puppies fur. She barks and i smile. How cute. "BRIDGET JONES! GET YOUR ASS DOWN HERE!" Leah yells. I laugh and pick her up. She screams and i clap her mouth shut with my hand. "Can i punish you later?" "What did i do?" she ask looking up at me. "You broke the rules for being too hot to handle." i set her on her feet. "Ouch." "Nice pickup line there Joe." Leah smirks. "I know right..it ...

  • Bandwidth Exceeded Another from the LRR crew. I chose this one because of these findings... "Audible sounds signals are in the range of about 20 Hz. to about 20 kHz. Sounds above this frequency are called "ultrasonic." Electromagnetic waves range from less than one hertz (used speculatively in seismology for earthquake prediction) through visible light near 10^15 Hz. to cosmic ray radiation up to 10^25 Hz." and... HDTV broadcast systems are defined threefold, by: #1 The number of lines in the vertical display resolution. #2 The scanning system: #3 The number of frames per second or fields per second. So ... The 720p60 format is 1280 × 720 pixels progressive scanning with 60 fields per second (120 Hz). Ok, so if it takes 120hz to get that quality of Video ... where the Hell is the Internet? • Global Warming Funny cartoon.. Global warming is the increase in the average temperature of Earth's near-surface air and oceans since the mid-20th century and its projected continuation. The IPCC also concludes that variations in natural phenomena such as solar radiation and volcanism had a small cooling effect after 1950. These basic conclusions have been endorsed by more than 40 scientific societies and academies of science,[B] including all of the national academies of science of the major industrialized countries. Most studies focus on the period up to the year 2100. However, warming is expected to continue beyond 2100 even if emissions stop, because of the large heat capacity of the oceans and the long ...
  • Republic: The Future (Trailer) Redefining patriotism: trailer for a DVD of selected proceedings of the Republic Annual General meeting and Conference held on the 28th of October 2006 at the University of Westminster. The DVD was produced without a budget, and speculatively on the basis of projected sales. It was a sympathetic treatment of the British movement for an elected head of state. The disk featured excerpts from the presentations of five of the speakers appearing on the day, and could still be instructive to those wanting to make an informed decision about whether to join or contribute to Republic. Topics include the role of former Prime Minister Tony Blair in leading debate about constitutional reform, and Republic's purpose, present structure, and strategy. Two guest speakers approached the concept of a British republic from contrasting if somewhat predictable standpoints: A former editor of the New Statesman astutely impugned royal symbolism and the intransigence of monarchists, while a Queen's Counsel (Barrister) spoke about the value of acknowledging or retaining traditions. Selected comments from short interviews with members were included. Opinion was canvassed during the meeting and members articulated both their reasons for supporting a British republic, and their perceptions of the Royal family. Some interesting observations were recorded. An important question regarding possible action at the time of accession was posed from the floor and answered by three of the speakers. Since one ...
