DARFUR REFUGEE WOMEN SPEAK OUT: Risking Life For Human Rights In June 2008, after a night of terror in a refugee camp for Darfur refugees in Chad (terror perpetrated by refugees living there), a group of courageous women living there decided to speak out. They created a document that has come to be called the Farchana Manifesto. This short piece tells their story and discusses some of the problems with long-term refugee camps, a lack of refugee rights, a lack of citizenship, IDPs (internally displaced people), the treatment of women and the pressures and demands on the UNHCR. One of the women, knowing the risk, wanted the story to reach the West, and was willing to speak on camera. She was interviewed by my friend Ivan, who was doing humanitarian aid work there. Back home, I (Pete) then interviewed Ivan, and with additional footage from a few generous others, put together this piece (2 parts). Army generals speak out about their PTSD Two Army generals talked to CNNs Barbara Starr about their experience with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in hopes that it will convince more suffering soldiers to come forward. Brig. General Gary S. Patton and Gen. Carter Ham have both sought counseling for the emotional trauma of their time in the Iraq war. One of our soldiers in that unit, Spec. Robert Unruh, took a gunshot wound to the torso, I was involved in medevacing him off the battlefield. And in a short period of time, he died before my eyes, Patton told CNN in an exclusive interview. Thats a memory [that] will stay with me the rest of my life. Ham was the commander in Mosul when a suicide bomber blew up a mess tent. Twenty-two people died. The 21st of December, 2004, worst day of my life. Ever, Ham said. To this day I still ask myself what should I have done differently, what could I have done as the commander responsible that would have perhaps saved the lives of those soldiers, sailors, civilians. In Islamic countries, on the other hand, the issue is far from dead. Any verbal denial of any principle of Muslim belief is considered apostasy. If one declares, for example, that the universe has always existed from eternity or that God has a material substance, then one is an apostate. If one denies the unity of God or confesses to a belief in reincarnation, one is guilty of apostasy. Certain acts are also deemed acts of apostasy, for example treating a copy of the Koran disrespectfully, by burning it or even soiling it in some way. Some doctors of Islamic law claim that a Muslim becomes an apostate if he or she enters a church, worships an idol, or learns and practises magic. A Muslim becomes an apostate if he defames the Prophets character, morals or virtues, and denies Muhammads prophethood and that he was the seal of the prophets. Homicide Detectives In Terry Blair Case Speak Out Kansas City homicide detectives who investigated convicted serial killer Terry Blair are speaking out about the case and the possibility of more victims who may never be found. "This was our first crime scene. Actually, this is the first time I've been back here since it happened," police Sgt. Doug Neimeier told KMBC's Lara Moritz. The scene at 26th Street and Montgall Avenue was just the beginning in the case. "We got here and worked the scene, went home and little did we know what was coming next," Neimeier said. Two bodies turned into six with the killer playing a phone game with detectives. "I've never been involved in a case where the killer is actually calling down here and talking to us, somewhat taunting us. That was a new one for me," Detective Rob Blehm said. "It bothered me at night. 'OK, when are getting the next call? How many are we going to have?'" Detective Donie Hoffman said. Eight detectives working the case said with each scene and each body, they felt Blair watching over them. "I think everybody was looking over their shoulder. I got a weird feeling," Neimeier said.
