  • Emergence of Spatially Implemented Periodic Spiking Oscillator Using Physarum model particle population to generate a spatial implementation of a spiking oscillator with refractory period. Particle movement is shown on the right and chemoattractant flux on the left. Mean chemoattractant flux was sampled to generate plot of spiking oscillator. Note the irregular regions during which period the iris did not open fully. Also note the spontaneous emergence of the refractory period which occurs as the iris expands. The spiking signal is generated when the iris collapses.
  • USCG Udell Rescue In 1995, an F-15E crew got spatially disoriented after their instruments froze on a night sortie. The only reason they knew something was wrong was because they heard the wind rush from outside the canopy - they were pointed at the ground going over 600 knots (above mach). The WSO (Capt Dennis White) died, but the pilot (Capt Brian Udell) survived with massive injuries. He holds the record for surviving the highest speed ejection from a US fighter. • MouseLight: Bimanual Interaction on Digital Paper using a Pen and a spatially-aware Mobile Projector MouseLight is a spatially-aware standalone mobile projector with the form factor of a mouse that can be used in combination with digital pens on paper. By interacting with the projector and the pen bimanually, users can visualize and modify the virtually augmented contents on top of the paper, and seamlessly transition between virtual and physical information. We present a high fidelity hardware prototype of the system and demonstrate a set of novel interactions specifically tailored to the unique properties of MouseLight. MouseLight differentiates itself from related systems such as PenLight in two aspects. First, MouseLight presents a rich set of bimanual interactions inspired by the ToolGlass interaction metaphor, but applied to physical paper. Secondly, our system explores novel displaced interactions, that take advantage of the independent input and output that is spatially aware of the underneath paper. These properties enable users to issue remote commands such as copy and paste or search. Project website: (to be presented at CHI'2010)
  • Spatially heterogeneous dynamics in a granular system AR Abate and DJ Durian Chaos 17, 041107 (2007) The video shows four representations of a driven granular system with spatially heterogeneous dynamics. Frame A shows the raw particle locations as a function of time. One particle's trajectory is colored in white. Frame B shows the average velocity vectors for an averaging time close to the crossover from subdiffusive to diffusive dynamics in the mean-squared displacement. Frame C shows the Persistent Bond diagram for a delay time that maximizes spatial heterogeneity in the break up of the nearest neighbor network. Frame D shows the Persistent Area diagrams for the delay time that maximizes the heterogeneity in the spatial distribution of black persistent area. The Persistent Bond and Persistent Area are two ways to quantify spatially heterogeneous dynamics.

  • The Chameleon: Spatially-Aware Palmtop Computers This video demonstrates an early prototype of a hand-held digital device where one navigates through the information displayed in a manner somewhat ***ogous to how one looks at the world through a camera's viewfinder: one pans left/right & up/down to change the firection of view, and moves in to get a close-up and out to get an overview. In order to avoid arm fatigue, or uncomfortable positions, or always moving images, a "clutch" button is included so that one can engage or disengage the navigation. Effectively, this enables one to reset the origin of the coordinate space. Refs: Fitzmaurice , George W. (1993). Situated information spaces and spatially aware palmtop computers. • Flyabout We describe a system called FlyAbout which uses spatially indexed panoramic video for virtual reality applications. Panoramic video is captured by moving a 360° camera along continuous paths. Users can interactively replay the video with the ability to view any interesting object or choose a particular direction. Spatially indexed video gives the ability to travel along paths or roads with a map-like interface. At junctions, or intersection points, users can chose which path to follow as well as which direction to look, allowing interaction not available with conventional video. Combining the spatial index with a spatial database of maps or objects allows users to navigate to specific locations or interactively inspect particular objects.
