Ohulehule Southeast (GoPro POV) We hiked the southeast ridge to Pu'u Ohulehule. Stuart Ball lists this hike as "the most dangerous hike on the island". The traditional route is via the northwest ridge from Kahana Valley. In the past, the southeast ridge was actually an HTMC club hike but after an accident involving a member, HTMC would never use this route again and mother nature has just about claimed the ridge in it's entirely. I've expected an overgrown ridge, but what caught me by surprise was the amount of effort required just to take 4 steps forward. I've hike numerous overgrown ridges, some bad and some just outright stupid, but I have never seen anything like this before. A chainsaw would be extremely useful. Aside from the overgrown x1000, the ridge gets very narrow in some spots and has a nasty climb to the summit of Ohulehule. The very last cable section requires you to climb like you've never climbed before. We descended via the northwest ridge, which houses the current route to the summit of Ohulehule. For those wanting to climb to this summit, I strongly recommend using the northwest ridge as it is cleared periodically and has relatively more stable cables and ropes (always test your ropes!). The southeast ridge is virtually stripped of it's trail and the final climb to the summit is incredibly steep and eroded! Track this hike via Every Trail! At 12:43:25 and climbing through 18100 feet, a thud was heard which the co-pilot described as sounding like a baseball bat striking an aluminum trash can. One of the blades of the propeller on the left engine had failed and the entire assembly had become dislodged, deforming the engine nacelle and distorting the wing's profile. Although the EMB 120 is designed to fly with one engine simply malfunctioning, the distortion of the engine resulted in excessive drag and loss of lift on the left side of the aircraft, causing it to rapidly lose altitude. The captain and co-pilot initially tried to return to Atlanta for an emergency landing, but the rapid descent resulted in them being diverted to West Georgia Regional Airport. Unfortunately, the airplane was unable to stay in the air that long and the pilots began searching for an open space to make a crash landing on the plane's belly. Survival Skills: Firemaking, Southeast US by Nutnfancy PART 1 OF 2: A detailed fire making exercise in the Southeastern United States by Nutnfancy. Quite a different climate and foliage than the usual Nutnfancy Knife Clinic in the Rocky Mountains, this southern location provided an equally excellent location for wilderness craft. Tools used included the excellent, high value KaBar Heavy Bowie and Cold Steel Roach Belly knives, a Sawvivor backpacking saw, WD40, and a Light My Fire flint and steel. All came along and were used for demonstration purposes but not necessarily by necessity. The intent is to show viable backpacking fire tools that will get the job doneweight and compactness for carry purposes being important considerations. The secret time-saving weapon in this particular time-crunched clinic was one stick of fatwood, discussed in the video. Safety considerations, chopping, cutting, knife philosophy, and fire building techniques are necessarily discussed as the work progresses in this two-part series. If the response is good, I may do more wilderness skills videos but they might be few since they take a lot of work and are time-consuming.

We were excited and a bit relieved to know that our flight would only take a few hours instead of the usual long haul sleeper train, but it also felt a bit like we were cheating. The morning didn't really get off to a smooth start. We decided to leave the packing and changing of currency for the morning as we were planning on getting up early. Unfortunately, our alarm didn't go off. We woke up late and packed as fast as we could. Thankfully we managed to do it all in time to catch the bus to the airport. Phew! The rest of the journey went like clockwork. We checked our baggage in, spent the last few dollars we had on junk food (Coconut M&M's, Toblarone White, a soy bar and some Mentos Chews... Yum!) anticipating that we wouldn't be eating for a while, and boarded the plane. We had eaten everything before the plane even took off. When we had been in the air about 10 minutes the air hostess came with her trolley... and, to our surprise, our lunch. Beef or fish. I told her I didn't eat meat and she said 'Oh. So...beef or fish?' The terrible devastation and the aftermath of this catastrophe caught on tape. The 2004 Boxing Day tsunami was triggered by an earthquake off the north-west coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra. It killed 230000 people in a dozen Indian Ocean countries, 170000 of them in Indonesia's Aceh province alone. Sri Lanka and Thailand were severely impacted by the tsunami on December 26, 2004. Tsunami Thailand 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake was an undersea earthquake that occurred at 00:58:53 UTC (07:58:53 local time) December 26, 2004, with an epicentre off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. Surprisingly, some islands right in the middle of the tsunami were not badly affected. It turns out their atolls, or coral reefs, absorbed much of the wave. The coral ridges protected them. In many regions of the Asian waters, there is a practice some fishermen use, of dynamiting the natural coral reefs to bring up fish. These barriers to the tsunami were no longer in place to deflect the water. Well, it's now been a month since I set foot on summery English shores and the time seems to have flown by. This is despite my efforts to rest for first week or two, then concentrate on job hunting and taking care of the more mundane administrative tasks that go along with starting a new life elsewhere (bank accounts and housing for example), instead of going out and partying whilst the fleeting English summer lasts. Although I seem to have achieved things maybe I should be out enjoying it more. Throughout July it was spectacularly hot here - officially rating as the hottest recorded July since 1914 (with an average 24 hour temperature of 21.4C and a top of 36C). It certainly wasn't the best weather for suiting up and tubing it to interviews I can tell you! Much better to be laying about half *** in the park as a steady stream of locals were doing outside my sister's window whilst I was lucky enough to be staying there. Oh well, if I was going to be dehydrated and lethargic it was good to have some cute eye candy out the window.
