- Sociology is a Martial Art (4/ I often say sociology is a martial art, a means of self-defense. Basically, you use it to defend yourself, without having the right to use if for unfair attacks. Pierre Bourdieu Pierre's Bourdieu's forty books and countless articles represent probably the most brilliant and fruitful renovation and application of social science in our era. The highly influential, at times controversial intellectual--a longtime Professor of Sociology at the College de France--passed away in January 2002. A "committed" thinker in the vein of Foucault, his work is concerned with elucidating the processes of symbolic violence and cultural domination in various areas of social life. His most well known book, Distinction (1979), addressed these themes in an effort to overcome the opposition of objectivist (Marxist) and subjectivist (Weberian) theories of class. In the late nineties he became something of a celebrity scholar, one of the world's most important academics actively associated with the anti-globalization movement. Bourdieu himself argued that scholars and writers could and should bring their specialized knowledge to bear on social and political issues. His powerful critiques of the neoliberal revolution were the natural outgrowth of a lifetime of research into economic, social and cultural class domination among peoples as disparate as Algerian peasants and French professors, and as expressed in everything from amateur photography to posture. - Sociology experiment If it is that easy for me to trick you then how much easier would it be for the media to trick you. If you were born in *** Germany, you would blindly follow the propaganda without question. You would be sending Jews to the gas chambers, just like you want to send Muslims to Gitmo bay. Many Americans think that we should nuke the Middle East but it's funny because the majority of Muslims live in Malaysia. When are we as human being going to learn how to live together? This video was just a sociology experiment. The sad fact is that most people will probably believe what they want to believe. They want to believe that Muslims are evil and so they give my story credibility. Are all Muslims bad? Are all Iraqis bad? Did you know that there are lots of Americans who are living and working in the Middle East. Why don't you ask them what it is like there. They should know since they live there. Why don't you get some first hand info. Why don't you meet a Muslim in real life and then form an opinion. Why don't you read the Quran first and then form an opinion.
- The Three Minute Sociologist: Deviance? (uh oh, you'll need 8 minutes!) How often have you said Wow, thats weird? Whats going on there? Your personal collection of experiences Things that youve learned as right or wrong How does a sociologist see this? a. Its about norms. Rules for living come from our culture, from groups around us and our personal understanding of these rules come from cultural values, beliefs and ultimately from attitudes b. Deviance is some departure from the normative order Notice not abnormal but the normative order. c. In this brief overview Ill look at only a part of deviance basically three things 1. Deviance isnt always bad. 2. Deviance may be primary or secondary 3. And deviance has at least two seemingly contradictory functions

- Media and culture: Sociology assignment This video was made by me for a sociology media and culture class to show how much impact the media can have on women of our society. Some may think that it is hypocritical to post something of this nature when I myself am a model; however, I am a voice from within the fashion industry who is trying to make a difference. I have felt so much pressure in my career as a model to be overly thin. I feel that the constant images we are exposed to time and again can play a negative impact on the way that we feel about ourselves. Some cities in Europe, including Milan have banned overly thin models from the runway. "Madrid Fashion Week, the Pasarela Cibeles, announced last week that it was banning models with a body mass index, or height-to-weight ratio, of less than 18 - which a 5-foot, 9-inch model would have at about 125 pounds. Also, the mayor of Milan, Letizia Moratti, said she would call on her city's designers to take similar action"( na 2006). This is an excellent start. The more that we speak out the better chance that we have to change this issue. I am happy to say that at this time I am no longer worrying about my weight as a model. I have decided to freelance and to not work through an agency unless they have agreed to take me for my weight at the present time. Most agencies won't take me at this time because of my weight, or they will agree to sign me if I lose weight. Keep in mind that I am 120 pounds at 5'9 which is already less than I should weigh based on the BMI ...

- The Three Minute Sociologist - POET: A Powerful Acronym in Sociology POET four letters at least 5 things. Usually Macro but can be used meso and micro. Population how many? What kind? Organization how are the collective social relationships set up to deal with societal life. Environment the physical and natural surroundings. Technology - The specific methods, materials, and devices used to solve practical problems. (American Heritage Dictionary) A micro example.
- Sociology: Global Social Problems - Visual Syllabus Today's global social problems stem from the accumulation of wealth in the hands of very few through means of coercion, forced labor, slavery, human trafficking, war, and violence. Even those social problems for which humankind is not directly responsible, such as natural disasters, are complicated by man-made economic inequalities. When we realize that humanity is of greater value than money, we will free ourselves of the burdens and sorrows of the world's most horrific and persistent social problems. With open hearts, we can liberate ourselves from the false consciousness that betrays our true interconnected nature and, thus, alienates us from ourselves and our fellow humanity. Love will conquer all. Have hope. Change is in our hands!! I am teaching a Global Social Problems course this semester (Spring 2010), and I made this video to introduce my students to the topics we will be covering throughout the semester. I introduce topics by units as they are outlined in my syllabus.

- Visual Sociology: Macro and Micro Perspectives For those of you with students who have an attention span of longer than 5 minutes (anyone?) this is the version "they're" calling the "Definitive One" (it's actual title is "Macro and Micro Perspectives" but who am I, a mere autour, to argue with the mighty Wisdom of Crowds?). As you might expect from this it combines Part 1 (macro) and Part 2 (micro) to make what Time Out has called "one thrilling rollercoaster of a movie" created by "a master who is, like, totally at the top of his game. Or something"*. Anyway, it's a couple of 5-minute vids stitched together under the general rubric (not a word you see everyday) of what Alan Dawe once called "The Two Sociologies". *Please note: in the interests of accuracy this may or may not be an actual quote from Time Out - and if, by some spooky coincidence, it does turn out to approximate to an actual quote, it has absolutely no connection, living, dead or merely undecided, with this particular video.

- The Sociological Imagination C. Wright Mills was a professor of sociology at Columbia University in the 1950's. In time I will review many of his books, including; The Sociological Imagination, White Collar, The Power Elite, The Marxists, The Causes of World War III, Character and Social Structure among others. In The Sociological Imagination, Mills draws a distinction between personal troubles and public issues within society. One needs to understand the intersections of history (& the social sciences) and the individual biography to understand and distinguish between personal troubles and public issues that cannot be solved by any one man.
- The Three Minute Sociologist: Soc Imagination and Perspective - Tools Across Cultures? Some sociological perspective tools I carry with me: 1. Cultures exist look for them patterned ways of life, beliefs, values norms. . I may not understand the culture in which I find myself, but I know there is a way of life there I must discover what it is. There are formal and informal rules look for them. Things have cultural relative meanings. Survival may hinge on whether I can determine the meaning. 2. Human action is organized, hence structured look for the patterns in what people do. This is true for normative and deviant events. There are status hierarchies .. some people are viewed to be more important. Your job who are they and why are they seen this way? 3. There are power and influence centers in human social systems these two are also formal and informal. 4. Social change occurs at a variety of speeds and in a variety of ways 5. Some social phenomena exist because they are simply collectively defined that way. 6. We are both autobiographical and biographical others, the historic definition and position
