Podcasts - Episode Three - Meet the Author: Simon Winchester on "The Man Who Loved China" Renowned author, journalist and broadcaster Simon Winchester discusses his New York Times Best Seller The Man Who Loved China: The Fantastic Story of the Eccentric Scientist Who Unlocked the Mysteries of the Middle Kingdom (HarperCollins 2008) at a luncheon program held at the New York offices of Jones Day on May 1, 2009. Needham (1900-1995), the great Sinologist and English don, is a legend for his 24-volume Encyclopedia Science and Civilization in China. His writings also shaped the West's understanding of China through inquiries such as the famous "Needham question," which asks why China failed to industrialize when Europe did, despite its prior achievements in printing, explosives, navigation, hydraulics, ceramics and governance.

"According to popular lore, the Kongming Lantern (Chinese: 孔明灯) was the first hot air balloon, said to be invented by the sage and military strategist Zhuge Liang, whose reverent term of address (ie Chinese style name) was Kongming. They were first deployed at the turn of the 3rd century as a type of signalling balloon or, it is claimed, as a type of spy blimp in warfare. Alternatively the name may come from the lantern's resemblance to the hat Kongming is traditionally shown to be wearing. It is likely that this technological discovery is misattributed because of the Chinese historical practice of attributing great discoveries to significant historical figures rather than to the actual inventors. According to the sinologist and historian of science Joseph Needham, the Chinese experimented with mini-hot air balloons from as early as the 3rd century BC - which suggests that the attribution of its invention to Kongming is indeed apocryphal."

Li Xiang Lan (李香蘭) - Lan Guei Ji Ji A traditional chinese shidaqu "song". By Li Xiang Lan. In fact, it is a tone poem put to music. The singer compares orchids to human life, as everything must know an end someday. Special thanks to Simon, fellow sinologist who reported as much about the meaning of this record. From the 20's, Li Xiang Lan has recorded such traditional chinese songs from "shidaqu era" (in classical mandarin). Born Yoshiko Yamaguchi, from japanese parents, she took the chinese name Li Xiang Lan after the invasion of Manchuria around 1920. After that, she lived in Shanghai till 1949 when the communist party took control over the city. She appeared in japanese propaganda movies, among other things. After WW II, she escaped execution after revelation of her japanese origin, and then fled to Hollywood and Broadway, where she was known under the name Shirley Yamaguchi. She went back to Japan several years later, becoming reporter for a local television, and covering happenings in Vietnam, Cambodge and the Middle-east... Today, she is known as Yoshiko Otaka, after her wedding with a japanese diplomat.

All of this social networking, tweeting, emailing, and being perpetually plugged-in means people hardly make the time to read *real* books these days. You know, thick tomes printed on acid-free paper that make a thud when they fall on the floor. The act of flipping pages. Taking the time to meticulously go through material and learn. You know what I mean... Way back in the early naughts I felt stupid. Really naive. So I started to read like a maniac. I went on a tear. Circa 2001, I read about 300+ books, and since then I've been an avid book addict. Spengler says that the communist party does not consider him "a friend of Chinese People". According to Qin Yongmin, co-founder of the China Democracy Party, Spengler is a friend of the Chinese people, not a friend of the Chinese Communist Party. Tilman Spengler said to DPA that the visa was denied because the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs consider him "not a friend to Chinese people". The Art of War Recent Read The Art of War (Chinese: 孫子兵法; pinyin: Sūn Zǐ Bīng Fǎ) is a Chinese military treatise that was written by Sun Tzu in the 6th century BC, during the Zhou dynasty. Composed of 13 chapters, each of which is devoted to one aspect of warfare, it has long been praised as the definitive work on military strategies and tactics of its time, and one of the basic texts on the subject. The Art of War is one of the oldest and most successful books on military strategy in the world. It has had a huge influence on Eastern military thinking, business tactics, and beyond. Sun Tzu recognized the importance of positioning in strategy and that position is affected both by objective conditions in the physical environment and the subjective opinions of competitive actors in that environment. He taught that strategy was not planning in the sense of working through a to-do list, but rather that it requires quick and appropriate responses to changing conditions. Planning works in a controlled environment, but in a competitive environment, competing plans collide, creating unexpected situations.
