Bryce Canyon National Park - UT, USA. Bryce Canyon National Park is really a maze-like series of canyons and amphitheaters, which run for almost twenty miles along the intricately eroded eastern edge of the Paunsaugunt Plateau. The plateau is composed of layers of sandstone, limestone, erosion-resistant shale and soft siltstone. Each of these types of rock erodes at a different rate, with water and wind removing the softer layers below hard cap rock. This produces a fairytale landscape of towering rock with tall, thin ridges called fins and pinnacles and spires called hoodoos. Ebenezer Bryce, the Mormon settler for whom the canyon was named said it was "a hell of a place to lose a cow."

Rock (ItemSea) More Info At: In geology, rock or stone is a naturally occurring solid aggregate of minerals and/or mineraloids. The Earth's outer solid layer, the lithosphere, is made of rock. In general rocks are of three types, namely, igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. The scientific study of rocks is called petrology, and petrology is an essential component of geology. Rocks are generally classified by mineral and chemical composition, by the texture of the constituent particles and by the processes that formed them. These indicators separate rocks into igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. They are further classified according to particle size. The transformation of one rock type to another is described by the geological model called the rock cycle. Sample of igneous gabbro Igneous rocks are formed when molten magma cools and are divided into two main categories: plutonic rock and volcanic. Plutonic or intrusive rocks result when magma cools and crystallizes slowly within the Earth's crust (example granite), while volcanic or extrusive rocks result from magma reaching the surface either as lava or fragmental ejecta (examples pumice and basalt) Sedimentary sandstone with iron oxide bands Sedimentary rocks are formed by deposition of either clastic sediments, organic matter, or chemical precipitates (evaporites), followed by compaction of the particulate matter and cementation during diagenesis. Sedimentary rocks form at or near the Earth's surface. Mud rocks ...

Russel Falls - Tasmania Russell Falls are located on the eastern boundary of Mount Field National Park, in Tasmania, Australia. Accessible by paved walking track, the falls are a popular tourist attraction. They were first named the Browning Falls after the original discoverer, c.1856, but were known as the Russell Falls after 1884, by which time they were already a popular tourist attraction. The Falls Reserve was established to protect them in 1885. In 1899 the Russell Falls were selected as one of eight images to be used on a set of pictorial postage stamps, aimed at promoting the then colony's growing tourist industry. Russell Falls are located 100 metres downstream of Horseshoe Falls. The horizontal rock strata over which the falls flow are Permian siltstone, and their more-resistant vertical faces consist of sandstone. The surrounding plant life includes swamp gum and sassafras. Grand Canyon Formation A short animation of the erosion and weathering in the geologic cycle of the formation of the Grand Canyon. Uplift of the region started about 75 million years ago in the Laramide orogeny mountain-building period that is mostly responsible for creating the Rocky Mountains. The Colorado Plateau was uplifted an estimated 2 miles and the Basin and Range area to the west started to form about 18 million years ago as the result of the earth's crust stretching. A drainage system that flowed through what is today the eastern Grand Canyon emptied into the now lower Basin and Range province. Ice ages during the Pleistocene era made for a cooler and wetter climate in the region starting about 2 - 3 million years ago. The greater precipitation increased runoff and the erosion ability of streams, especially in the spring runoff from the rockies. With this increased flow the Colorado River cut faster than before and started to excavate the Grand Canyon, almost reaching the modern depth by 1.2 million years ago. This animation was created with a ray tracing program called "Bryce". Contact: Mark4Lewis@

Read the full blog here: This blog preview was made by TravelPod using the TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow creator. Entry from: Williams, United States Entry Title: "Painted Desert, wigwams, Winslow, the Grand Canyon" Entry: "An early morning and we're back in the Painted Desert. We stopped at the overlooks to admire the colors of the unique landscaping. Learnt that the white layers are sandstone, dark red is iron stained siltstone. Every pull off offers up a unique view of colors. Then it's west bound. Gotta stop and see the Wigwams. I wanted to stay here, but it wasn't close enough. These motel "rooms" are unique. Each has it's own permanetly parked antique car. The rooms are small inside with a double bed, and bath, but when you have all the comforts of home in a wigwam, why complain. Next we've decided to stop in Winslow Arizona. Just so we can say we did stand on the corner, just like in the Eagles song. And got the photos to prove it. Then up 89 to Cameron. Can't pass up a trading post that's been open since the 1900's. The is a huge variety of souvineers. We looked at kachina dolls, wooden carvings, handmade rugs and baskets. It's not a bargain store, these are authentic handmade crafts. There's also a general store, restaurant that serves fry bread, a motel, and an RV park. Lots of antiques scattered around. We found a garden that is also a must see, very relaxing. Back in the car and we are passing the ...

Bowmans Creek Watershed Association http Bowman's Creek is a medium size freestone stream that flows in a northeast direction for nearly 30 miles before it empties into the much larger Susquehanna River. Both are part of the huge Chesapeake Bay Watershed. Restoring water quality in our watershed will have a positive influence on the Susquehanna River and Chesapeake Bay. Visit the Chesapeake Bay Program website Chesapeake Bay It begins with South Branch Bowman's Creek and increases its volume with the addition of Cherry Run before it flows into Mountain Springs Lake. The lake is the result of a dam constructed in the late 19th century for harvesting ice. I became the property of the Pa. Fish Commission in 1957. Today the dam is in disrepair and the water level lowered as a result. From there it flows toward the Susquehanna being fed along the way by many small streams. In its upper reaches streams such as Beth Run and Wolf Run contribute water to the creek. In the lower part streams such as Leonard's Creek and Sugar Hollow Creek add to the flow before its confluence south of Tunkhannock. Here it passes the baton in the form of water to the Susquehanna for the final leg of its journey to the Chesapeake Bay. Geology plays an important part in the conditions and make up of the streams in a watershed. Geological formations found in the Bowman Creek watershed are characterized by sandstone and shale along with some conglomerate and siltstone beads (PA Department of ...
A Trip To Silent Pool & Sherbourne Pond Silent Pool & Sherbourne Pond (Thursday 24th February 2011) The Silent Pool is a lake fed by a spring on the south side of the North Downs Way near Albury, Surrey. In the area there are two lakes. The Silent Pool is the higher one; the lower lake is called Sherbourne Pond which was created 1662. The Silent Pool, however, is of a much earlier origin and is considered by some to be a sacred site. It is linked to a folklore tale that says King John on his horse abducted a woodcutter's daughter who was forced into the deep water and drowned. According to the legend, the maiden can be seen at midnight. The Silent Pool is so called because of its clear still waters and the feeling of tranquillity that pervades the area. The clear water comes from a spring after it has passed through the chalk hillside which filters it and adds minerals. This explains why the water has a blue-green colour. The Silent Pool lies on Lower Chalk, which was seen at the northern end of the pond. Sherbourne Pond lies mainly on Gault Clay, while its northern end and the stream connecting the two ponds lies on Upper Greensand. Blocks of the Upper Greensand can be found in the stream bed: a pale grey siltstone which weathers to brown and is harder than the chalk. A survey of the Silent Pool in 2006 suggested that the southern half of Silent Pool was in fact dug out at the same time as Sherbourne Pond (1662), while the northern half is of geological origin. It appears that this natural half of the pond was ...
stone artifacts Ground Stone Artifacts Softer stones like slate, sandstone, and siltstone were also used to make tools using a pecking or grinding technique. Ground stone tools from this region are comparatively rare next to chipped stone tools. In coastal BC ground stone tools represent a relatively recent technology and later time periods. Ground stone artifact forms include hand mauls, adzes, mortars & pestles. Hand mauls were used as hammers and are found in a variety shapes and sizes. Adzes are ground and polished artifacts, rectangular in shape with a beveled edge. They were used in conjunction with hand mauls to split materials like wood and bone. Mortars and pestles are used for preparing plant and animal foods and medicines by grinding. Finally, ground stone clubs are found throughout BC, however their function remains unclear. They are generally thought to be ceremonial objects as their weight prohibits them from being functional, for instance in combat.
