Read the full blog here: This blog preview was made by TravelPod using the TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow creator. Entry from: Shanghai, China Entry Title: "Shanghaied in Shanghai (almost)" Entry: "Due to over 100 cases of Norovirus (or food posiioning ,or a little of both), Chinese Immigrations refused to allow passengers to get off the ship until they called in other Health Officials. For awhile it looked as if we were going to be held onboard until our departure time of that evening. However, four hours later, we were on our way to Shanghai a city of contrasts. Full of amazing modern architecture and old world Chinese charm. Our original tour out to Suzhou was cancelled due to the lateness of our disembarkation so we did a city tour with a visit to the top of the 88 story ( 88 floors in 45 seconds !) Jinmao Tower. The top 10 floors is a Grand Hyatt hotel. We also did a walking tour of Shanghai's Old Town with it's winding cobblestone lanes of shops and restaurants, plus the beautiful Yu Gardens. The Yu Gardens, which dates from the Ming Dynasty, is filled with koi ponds, twisting bridges and more than 30 pavilions. A true oasis in the middle of bustling Shanghai." • Larry Marr (The Big Five Gallon Jar) A traditional song of true events from San Francisco's own Barbary Coast (now North Beach & Pacific Street). Sailors were regularly kidnapped from bars and brothels around my neighborhood. This is a work song (capstan) that they sang while on board ship to warn others (and themselves) of the dangers of life ashore. . . I'm particularly fond of this chantey because it is so clearly related to real San Francisco history & the birth of the term "shanghaied".

  • lectric funk shanghaied disco purrfection remix 1979 Not much is known about Lectric Funk, even the Unidisc label got the song name wrong, its Shanghaied. From Wikiepedia "Shanghaiing refers to the practice of conscripting men as sailors by coercive techniques such as trickery, intimidation, or violence. Those engaged in this form of kidnapping were known as crimps. Until 1915, unfree labor was widely used aboard American merchant ships." So the protagonist of this song was tricked by the Dragon Lady, slipped a mickey in his drink and when he woke up "everything he had was gone". The reason this sounds so good is due to producer John Ferrara, who also as Ferrara created another tight rockin disco song called "Love Attack". While I was listening to the countdown, when I spun the turntable backwards, its sounded like a secret message that said " I want to hear disco"...so I used this in my special remix here. This song appeared in the obscure 1980 movie "Gas Pump Girl".
