  • semiotic sign (part 1/5) A sign, as ordinarily understood, is simply something that suggests the presence or existence of something else, a perceptible indication of something not immediately apparent. What's so difficult about that? Why should that require the development of a whole new perspective on reality and experience, as so-called "semiotics", as the study of the way signs works, claims? This video, a dialogue between a semiotician and a proponent of "realist" philosophy, addresses directly the question of what is the difference semiotics makes for our understanding of what is a sign. • Chapter 2: Professional Development Seminar by Semiotics Inc at one of Australia's leading law firms - A Professional Development Seminar presented by Semiotics Inc. This Chapter examines a corporate identity (HostTel), with specific regard to the choices of words, colours, and fonts. HostTel Semiotics: A segmental ***ysis of the HostTel brand reveals what readers are guided to interpret about the organisation. The ***ysis proves the necessity for semiotic know-how when making syntagmatic and paradigmatic choices in brand authoring. Interestingly a segmental ***ysis can only occur if there are segments to ***yse. This is a significant point as it evidences brand as a compilation. The HostTel compilation is greater than the sum of its parts because design and construction create relationships between and beyond the segments. Individually; • The name describes HostTel as an organisation that enables guests to utilise the internet to exchange communications. • The symbol portrays energy around which intelligence and truth revolve in perpetuity. • The positioning statement is a succinct means to contextualise the company, while allowing room for the imagination of the reader. • The font reinforces the image of the company as being forward-thinking, structured, and strong. As a compilation the HostTel brand signifies stimulation and stability, flair and precision. There are connotations of dynamism and eternity. It is solid, yet flexible. The HostTel identity is friendly and powerful.

  • 8. Semiotics and Structuralism Introduction to Theory of Literature (ENGL 300) In this lecture, Professor Paul Fry explores the semiotics movement through the work of its founding theorist, Ferdinand de Saussure. The relationship of semiotics to hermeneutics, New Criticism, and Russian formalism is considered. Key semiotic binaries--such as langue and parole, signifier and signified, and synchrony and diachrony--are explored. Considerable time is spent applying semiotics theory to the example of a "red light" in a variety of semiotic contexts. 00:00 - Chapter 1. What is Semiology? 08:34 - Chapter 2. • European Semiotics 1/5 - University of Helsinki European Semiotics is a periodical lecture course held in November 2011, delivered as a part of teaching of semiotics at the University of Helsinki. It was given at the amphitheater of the University Museum 'Arppeanum'. Lectures deal with history of semiotics, and particularly regarding two central phenomena in the European tradition: 1) Claude Lévi-Strauss and his structuralism, and 2) the so-called Paris school of semiotics founded by AJ Greimas. As to the latter, his basic concepts are introduced, notions which still constitute one of the main streams in semiotics, particularly in Italy, Spain, Fance, Latin America, and Canada, not to mention Finland. Thereafter, lectures focus on the new theory of semiotics elaborated by Eero Tarasti, the so-called existential semiotics. Its roots in German speculative philosophy are elucidated from Kant and Hegel to Jaspers, Heidegger and Hannah Arendt, and in the French existentialists, JP Sartre, Gabriel Marcel, Jean Wahl, and Simone de Beauvoir. Furthermore, such new concepts launched by the existential semiotic as 'Dasein', transcendence, metamodalities and new categories of signs (presigns, actsigns, postsigns etc.), are discussed. Moreover, the problem of values is pondered. Existential semiotics is among the new trends in contemporary semiotics, already with a considerable amount of publications (in English, French, Italian, Finnish, Bulgarian, and forthcoming in Polish, Chinese and Farsi). Nevertheless, an integral course on ...

Rosler's slashing gesture as she forms the letters of the alphabet in the air with a knife and fork, is a rebel gesture, punching through the "system of harnessed subjectivity" from the inside out. "I was concerned with something like the notion of Ôlanguage speaking the subject,' and with the transformation of the woman herself into a sign in a system of signs that represent a system of food production, a system of harnessed subjectivity." —Martha Rosler

  • Semiotics of Engagement The nature of design is inextricably connected to experience. Whether we are designing a building or designing information, we are concerned with how people experience the building or information as they encounter and interact with it. The question that we seek to explore here is one of a semiotics of engagement as it relates to design as a cross-disciplinary phenomenon: does engagement differ depending on the form or medium of design or does engagement, as a semiotic of experience, remain constant across different medium. Is it expressed similarly in architecture and in information design? This paper will examine the concepts of spectacle and usability as correlative terms representing differing constructions of the experience of engagement within the semiotics of design. These terms are not opposites but rather situationally dependent on each other for their meaning and value: they define each other through the process of disassociation. As such, they exist in tension, posing for each other the possibility of imminent convergence and transformation. These terms become useful ***ytic tools for us to examine the ways in which design artifacts seek to engage users. After articulating more fully the concepts of spectacle and usability, we will examine a range of design artifacts from architectural installations to Web sites to reveal how the terms function as a semiotic of design. • Semiotics: the study of signs a short educational animated film; an introduction to the study of semiotics
  • Semiotics Of The Tie Sheldon requires a lesson in semiotics from Penny to understand the meaning of the tie. The reference to semiotics in this mainstream comedy shows the increasing acceptance of the science as a tool to aid comprehension. What's more, in an ironic twist, it is the 'blonde' who teaches the scientist. This suggests we are all semioticians, as we all have an understanding of the communications by which we are surrounded. In Penny's world, the tie seems to be a common and well understood message. Of course, Sheldon does not inhabit Penny's world. Therefore, he needs her cultural insights in order to understand the tie. Note though, Sheldon can interpret the violin case. That said, he does propose 2 possibilities of meaning, in his own inimitable fashion.
  • Semiotics of the City - São Paulo What does it mean to read a city? This is a video (of a series to continue) on Semiotics of the Cities. In this video, information, signs (verbal and non-verbal), emotions etc. are read in some spots of the city of São Paulo - Brasil. A city has at least 2 dimensions: (a) physical and (b) the appropriation that its citizens make of the urban space. So, reading a city means somehow opening yourself for being affected by her, for loving her. That is why the Semiotics of cities can be considered part of the affective domain in learning: a cognitive reading is not enough to read the text of a city. Signifiers are many times found overlapping and disconnected from its meanings, and as the use of the city is part of it, emotions must be included in reading. This video aims to illustrate concepts of semiotics, and call the attention for possible microreadings of a city, opening our eyes and feelings so that we can fall in love with her. It is directed to any semiotics, architecture, engineer, image etc. students, but, in a broader sense, to everyone who lives in a city, and wants to open himself to be affected by her.
