Read the full blog here: This blog preview was made by TravelPod using the TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow creator. Entry from: Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, Australia Entry Title: "The red hot centre" Entry: "Off it was to the dreaded red centre. The place of legends and heat strokes. Stepping off the plane we braced ourselves for the heat chock. We did get a chock, because what we got was a cool breeze. Later on we found out that they've had rains for the last 3 weeks and even had severe floodings. We had picked a little special hostel for Alice Springs, Alice's Secret. It was a small quaint place with almost a camp feeling mixed with a good bit of hippie decor. Some of the rooms were in caravans and the signs were painted on walls in colourful paint. Yet clean and proper in ways that counted, and very homey despite us only staying for one night. Everyone being up-beat and relaxed at the same time. Everyone had suggested we use our short time in Alice to visit the Desert Park just outside of town. Said and done, we took of straightaway for it. Located just by the foot of the Macdonnell Ranges, it had a very scenic backdrop to the exhibits. It is an outdoor park displaying the main habitats in central Australia and the flora and fauna accompanying it. The introduction was given through an excellent video. After which we took off into the first habitat. Since this is very close to the original environment, it all ...
  • Arnold Schoenberg, String Quartet No. 3 (1927) Schoenberg diverged from the serial row-form in this String Quartet to the extent that, when questioned about a particular passage by a violinist from Kolisch's quartet he angrily responded: ''If I hear an F-sharp I will write an F-sharp . . . Just because of your stupid theory you are telling me what to write?'' This is an indication of his revulsion towards conceptual responses to composition as an actual expression of feeling in sound. He was telling the theorist What it Is. How did Kolisch look at it? The tone rows are used as motifs and not as schematic solutions to tonic dilemmas. The series form a dense contrapuntal texture which, apparently untrue to form, return to classical compositional procedure. For example, in the First Movement there is the suggestion of sonata form and what seems to be a relaxation of 12-tone technique as the same pitches occur for 12 measures, in apparent defiance of his principled compositional stance. There is a recurrence of varied shapes which function as connective rather than motivic tissue and the movement ends with a leaping and falling theme in an increasingly higher voice. In the Second Movement there is a series of variations which violate stylistic expectation and appear to repudiate notions of format and theme. The Intermezzo Movement with prominent viola presents a fluid thematic section, suggesting a motif with a narrow range and repeated notes culminating in a violent trio fading to a lyrical conclusion. The Fourth ...

Read the full blog here: This blog preview was made by TravelPod using the TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow creator. Entry from: Isla Floreana, Ecuador Entry Title: "Punta Cormoran" Entry: "Note: The cruise was fantastic, incredible, unique. The pictures and text won't reflect that, sorry. Most of the time the light was quite poor, and moreover I had better to do than take pictures. Seeing wildlife from so close is just an unmissable occasion to just... watch it! ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------ We had arrived near Isla Floreana during the night. After an early breakfast and briefing, we landed at Punta Cormoran. A few sea lions still sleeping there, on the beach. The sand was dark green in color, due to the presence of Olivine. A big tuff cone borded the beach. The olivine is formed in the mantel, in big cristals that then break up. Tuff cones are underwater formations: lava flowing out in the water explodes, throwing in all directions little pellets of cooling lava stones. These deposit again, forming tuff cones. They appear above the water when uplifted by lava flows underneath, so they are found on many islands (each island beeing one or several volcano). The tuff cones are therefore "sedimented" in layers, much more friable than lava: they provide the sand, as the water erode them quickly. This makes for the dark green color: a lot of basalt with a bit of ...
  • Ian Pooley - Disco Love Ian Pooley is a master of deceleration. Once asked in an interview about his plans for the future he opted for being a fisherman on a Croatian island. What shines through is his ability to keep his cool. "I'm not interested in braggin' about producing four tracks in two days" he explains. „Of course it's technically possible but not satisfying for me." As passionate producer and musician, he prefers to take his time for skilful arrangements. Much time, in truth. His album 'Souvenirs', Pooley's latest comment on electronic music and follow up to his album "Since Then" which sold 100.000 units, was released in summer 2004. And four years are an eternity within our fast living time. „I love to create complex sounds and songs" he elaborates. "And I've found out that a great track takes its time." But as much requested international top dj, he also finds himself at the centre of a hectic club scene, pushed between the clubs of Milano, Kiev and Miami. Still he knows how to adapt and profits from the changing scenes, as open-mindedness is key to his musical approach. Extensive studio work and rapid dj trips are the opposing forces of his life. In spring 2006, Pooley left his home town Mainz, his base camp for 15 years of highly successful music productions and DJ activities. „I used to enjoy my reclusive life in Mainz especially after returning from a series of international DJ gigs. But when the local scene deflated, I began to miss the creative exchange with fellow musicians ...

  • Anthony Marr interview Part 4 of 7 - "Man the Hunter" Myth "In their myriad telling, scientific narratives of human evolution have accumulated a ton of ideological baggage; human origins accounts often are more rooted in fiction than fact, and many were spawned before recent archaeological and scientific breakthroughs. Few models are as dominant as the story of Man the Hunter. This theory of evolution and human nature argues that human beings: (1) are natural carnivores; (2) were always hunters; and (3) are inherently violent and aggressive. Not only prevalent in science, these assumptions spread into culture and everyday life, where they shaped anthropocentric worldviews and sedimented into common sense. Yet each element in the Man the Hunter model is a fiction and myth that both stems from and perpetuates false concepts of human identity. The prevalent notion of human nature has no grounding in historical reality and in fact is a social construction with troubling implications and consequences." For more on the brilliant article by Dr. Steven Best The idea of "Man the Hunter" is the generally accepted paradigm of human evolution, says Sussman, who recently served as editor of American Anthropologist. "It developed from a basic Judeo-Christian ideology of man being inherently evil, aggressive and a natural killer. In fact, when you really examine the fossil and living non-human primate evidence, that is just not the case." Studying the fossil evidence And examine the evidence they did. Sussman and Hart's ...
  • DaAiTV_DaAi Headlines_ 20101015 Good clean furnace In the final installment of our short series of features from Japan, we visit a landfill site near Yokohama, where engineers go to great lengths to protect the groundwater from contamination. But before that, we investigate the start of the garbage treatment process, at a colorful garbage incineration plant in Osaka. The heat generated by the furnace is used to power the facility, and the air and water inside is recycled and filtered. The incinerator is so clean it has become an unusual tourist attraction in Osaka. ( Not an amusement park ) In this colorful building, no window or tower is the same. Looking like an amusement park, this is in fact... " It's a garbage incinerator." ( Air inside is recycled and filtered ) This is the Maishima Incineration Plant - which burns garbage 24 hours a day. Trucks come and go, but the plant does not have the smell of rotting garbage that you would expect, which is because the air inside is used to burn the rubbish, and is only released after being filtered. Maishima Incineration Plant manager, Shimizu Ayumu :" The air is purified, and of course we monitor for toxins, like dioxin, hydrochloric and sulfuric acid, nitrous oxide, and many others apart from those; but especially dioxin, which is less than 1 percent of the legal level." ( Trash turned into power ) Apart from keeping its emissions pollution free, the incineration plant also produces green energy. Using heat generated from the furnace, water is boiled into steam, some of ...

Entry from: Tienshe, Taiwan Entry Title: "Wushe and return to Taipei - hike given up" Entry: "Total kilometers: 8 Total ascent: 160m Total descent: 160m The weather has improved a bit. The rain has stopped and sometimes the sun breaks through the clouds. We have breakfast in the garden of the hostel. Then we walk down to the lake, below Wushe. It has been a pretty view with green water in the past, but now most of the lake is filled with sand and mud and the water can only be seen at the remote end. We walk on the sand towards the river flowing into the lake - so fine, so good. On the way back we walk a slightly different way and then it happens. Suddenly my left leg sinks in, deeper and deeper until my knee and no way to pull it out. Trying to do so my right leg sinks in and gets stuck. In slight panic I used my elbows and a stick to push and pull myself out and then robbing to firm ground. Saved, but dirty - my shoes, trousers to the knees, arms. On the way back to the hostel we pass a small river and I clean everything as good as I can. At about noon we take the bus back to Puli and from there to Taipei." Is it made up of symbolic code or of neural connections? Is it a sedimented trace left by previous conversations or an innate human capacity?
