  • Astronomers find first habitable planet outside solar system SAN JOSE, Calif. — Astronomers have discovered the first planet outside the solar system with the potential to support life. The planet orbits a red dwarf star called Gliese 581, 20 light years from Earth, in the middle of the star's habitable zone, meaning that temperatures on its surface are just right for life to develop. US-based scientists found the planet using precise measurements from the Keck telelscope in Hawaii, which has been scrutinising Gliese 581 for more than a decade. The new planet, called Gliese 581g, is one of several known to be orbiting the star, but is the first to be discovered in the so-called Goldilocks Zone, where the distance from the star means that temperatures are neither too hot or too cold for life to exist. "We had planets on both sides of the habitable zone - one too hot and one too cold - and now we have one in the middle that's just right," Steven Vogt of University of California, who worked on the team that discovered the planet, said. He says that less than 500 planets have been discovered outside of the solar system, and the fact that this one lies in the middle of the Goldilocks Zone suggests that habitable planets could be extremely common. "The fact that we were able to detect this planet so quickly and so nearby tells us that planets like this must be really common," he said. "If the local stellar neighborhood is a representative sample of the galaxy as a whole, our Milky Way could be teeming with ...

  • Behind the Scenes:Jury Deutsche Telekom Interactive TV Award Not an Easy Decision After the closing date on April 4, the Interactive TV Award team reviewed 105 applications from 13 countries, scrutinising the concept outlines and assessing the ideas behind them. "The number of submissions and the engagement of the competitors overwhelmed us, to put it mildly," says Marc Schröder, patron of the Awards and Segment Director Communication Services, Products & Innovation Division. "The market is extremely young and the developer community is correspondingly small. So it's all the more impressive that in so little time we received applications from all over the world, for example Australia and Korea." In the first step the 20 best submissions were filtered out by the team on the basis of the criteria check list. Then in a second selection procedure, the ten winners were named by a jury of experts and Deutsche Telekom decision makers. Read the full story: www.interactive-tv-

  • Salman Khan is an Eternal Bachelor Salman Khan may have blurted out that he's getting married next year, due to media and public pressure. But the truth is the actor's in no mood to get all tied up yet. The media, it appears, is as obdurate as the macho man himself, and won't stop scrutinising the situation. And for those of you who're particularly interested in the bad boy getting hitched, here's a sneak peek into what his near and dear ones have to say about the subject. Arbaaz Khan: “We agree it's about time he gets married, but Salman is the eternal bachelor. He's the best person to decide when he wants to get married. We can only hope that, like us, he too will get married and have kids of his own soon. The problem is, he still thinks of himself as a kid. In any case, we don't lose sleep over the fact that he's still single.” Sohail Khan: “He keeps saying that since he's the oldest, he has responsibility on his shoulders and will only get married after little sister Arpita is settled. We stopped asking him about his marriage plans about 7-8 years ago!” Katrina: “Marriage is totally in God's hands. It's not something you can plan. It will happen when it's meant to happen.” So, if you've been waiting with bated breath for the day Salman walks down the aisle with his ladylove, we'd suggest a time-out. 33SalmanKhanEternalBachelor.mp4
  • Debate: DGCA not tough enough? - 2 Aviation regulator DGCA has so far lodged a total of 13 FIRs against as many pilots for obtaining licences on the basis of fudged documents. "We have so far lodged 13 FIRs against 13 pilots," DGCA chief EK Bharat Bhushan said. Till date, 13 persons, including five pilots and three DGCA staffers, have been arrested on charges of using forged marksheets, fudged flying hours and related documents to procure flying licences from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). With the drive to verify the documents and licences of pilots and commanders nearing completion, the regulator is rushing through the process of scrutinising all papers relating to those licence holders whose cases are suspect. Over 1700 licences have so far been scrutinised and seven of them have turned out to be fake. • Ekskluzivni snimci Ratka Mladica 4 dio Footage showing Ratko Mladic screened on Bosnian TV bosna.lu Videos of wanted warlord partying with family and friends may have been shot while he was on the run A Bosnian TV programme has broadcast videos of the fugitive former Bosnian Serb army chief Ratko Mladic, apparently filmed over the past decade. To judge by the home videos, the private life of the Balkan mass murderer is one long night of partying, feasting, dancing and singing. General Ratko Mladic, the 67-year-old former Bosnian Serb warlord wanted for genocide who has been on the run for more than a decade, enjoys a fearsome reputation for unconscionable blood lust. He oversaw the massacre of some 8000 Muslim men and boys at Srebrenica in 1995 and masterminded a 42-month war in Bosnia that left 100000 dead, most of them Bosnian Muslims. Yet, a hoard of home movies that have just come to light and which were screened on Bosnian television yesterday evening show the genocide suspect as a doting grandfather, devoted husband, and grief-stricken father. Mladic's only daughter, Ana, then a Belgrade student, took one of her father's pistols and shot herself in 1994. It was never clear if Mladic attended the funeral. The film removes any doubts. Mladic is seen prostrate with grief, sobbing over the coffin at the funeral. The funeral scene apart, the footage is mostly of jollity parties and weddings and restaurant banquets. Mladic dances and sings, is applauded and celebrated by his cronies and their wives. The ...

  • The View From Drapchi Prison In 1993, 14 imprisoned Buddhist nuns secretly recorded protest songs and smuggled the tape out of Drapchi Prison in Tibet. When word of the recording got out, the nuns say Chinese authorities added five to nine years to their sentences. Seven nuns eventually were released, but remain in Tibet. One died in custody and six others now live in exile. Four are currently visiting London to help raise awareness of the Tibetan struggle for independence and religious freedom. Catherine Drew has more In 1993 in Tibets Drapchi Prison four*** young nuns all prisoners of conscience imprisoned for taking part in peaceful demonstrations calling for Tibetan independence had their sentences extended by between five and nine years each for recording freedom songs that would later be heard around the world. Of the Drapchi 14, or Tibets singing nuns as they became known around the world, one died in custody, seven remain in Tibet and six are now living in exile in India, Belgium, Switzerland and the USA. Singing Louder: In the run up to and during the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, the world will be scrutinising the human rights situation in China as never before despite her authoritarian regimes best attempts to gloss over their appalling record. To help raise awareness of Tibet's critical situation and the plight of Tibetans, the Tibetan Community in Britain has organised a UK reunion during March and April 2008 of the six singing nuns now living in exile. Despite years of inhumane treatment ...
  • Tutankhamun ma have been killed by Malaria The Egyptian 'boy king' Tutankhamun may well have died of malaria after the disease ravaged a body crippled by a rare bone disorder, experts say. The findings could lay to rest conspiracy theories of murder. The scientists spent the last two years scrutinising the mummified remains of the 19-year old pharaoh to extract his blood and DNA. This revealed traces of the malaria parasite in his blood, the Journal of the American Medical Association says. Shrouded in mystery Ever since Howard Carter's discovery of Tutankhamun's intact tomb in the Valley of the Kings in 1922, scholars have speculated over why the 19-year old 'boy king' died so young. Some believe he was killed by a fall from his chariot. Others suspect foul play.
  • Ekskluzivni snimci Ratka Mladica 1 dio Footage showing Ratko Mladic screened on Bosnian TV bosna.lu Videos of wanted warlord partying with family and friends may have been shot while he was on the run A Bosnian TV programme has broadcast videos of the fugitive former Bosnian Serb army chief Ratko Mladic, apparently filmed over the past decade. • Weapons of Mass Deception trailer Weapons of Mass Deception trailer Watch the full film Here: www.joiningthedots.tv The Iraq war has politicised the world in a way not seen since Vietnam. But, have we focused too much on political and intelligence failures and not the failures of the media to scrutinise the policies that led the US and Britain to war? In WMD, Media critic, Danny Schechter, explores the roles the Pentagon propaganda machine and the media played in the Iraq War. WMD's hard-hitting dissection of information warfare asks if the media was complicit in the selling of an unpopular conflict and if the media-management techniques of government are now out of control? Schechter's film includes never-before-seen footage from Iraq, insider information about Pentagon information warfare strategy and a report about torture at Baghdad's notorious Abu Ghraib prison that predates the US network stories by eight months. The film investigates the embed program, 'infiltrates' Fox News and takes a global approach to ***ysing coverage. WMD comes on the heels of an admission by the New York Times that its pre-war coverage was deeply flawed, a view seconded by Michael Getler, ombudsman of the Washington Post. WMD adds to a growing debate within the US news business about its coverage that differed dramatically from reporting seen around the world. Schecter argues that the war would never have been fought had the corporate owned media held a more scrutinising position in their approach to the Bush administration ...

  • Megaphone Wars - The Suppression of Free Speech I WAS RELEASED AFTER A 5 MINUTE RIDE IN THE POLICE VAN. No DNA sample nor fingerprints taken. =) Megaphone confiscated as evidence. Suppression of dissent is undesirable in society for a variety of fundamental reasons. Freedom of speech is a cardinal rule for a free society. Dissent is absolutely essential to allow all points of view to be given and considered. Censorship plays a central role in the control of speech and other forms of human expression, often by government intervention (through criminalization or other regulation). It is most commonly applied to acts which occur in public circumstances, and most formally involves suppression of ideas by criminalizing or regulating expression. Justice Holland in the High Court in 2007 stated that: "Protest is lawful; the use of a megaphone as an adjunct of lawful protest is itself lawful. The starting point is unfettered freedom to engage in so much amplified protest as is neither intimidating or harassing." HLS Group Plc v SHAC 2007 WL 919475 [2007] EWHC 522 (QB) QBD. The Serious Organised Crime and Police Act is a very good example of unscrutinised, ill considered and under-discussed legislation ... civilians with no criminal intent ... have suffered receiving a criminal offence simply because they have expressed their views within 1 kilometre of the Houses of Parliament. Baroness Williams (Lib Dem) 26/01/07 When I pass protestors every day at Downing Street, and believe me, you name it, they protest against it, I may ...
  • Debate: DGCA not tough enough? - 1 Aviation regulator DGCA has so far lodged a total of 13 FIRs against as many pilots for obtaining licences on the basis of fudged documents. TIMES NOW's Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami debates the issue with Capt Minoo Wadia, Aviation Expert; Air Marshall ( Retd) Kapil Kak, Additional Director, Centre for Air Power Studies; Jitendra Bhargava, Former Director, Air India; Ashwini Kakkar, CEO, Mercury Travels and DS Dutta, Former director of operations, AI.

  • The victims of religious indoctrination Just watch this video and think about what it shows. Children praising a god that has no basis in reality simply because this school, like many others, has told them god not only exists but is scrutinising every little thing they do against an arbitrary code that cannot possibly be considered moral. It's nothing less than state sponsored brain washing of Britain's kids. They've been taught utter nonsense as fact. These are adults teaching children that they must believe fairytales and that they do not require a reason to do so. They are manipulating children and it is abuse.
