  • Joe Eszterhas - On Screenwriting Complete program at: fora.tv Screenwriter and author Joe Eszterhas discusses the writing process, and offers some advice for aspiring screenwriters. ----- Joe Eszterhas, best-selling author and legendary bad-boy screenwriter discusses his new book "The Devil's Guide to Hollywood: the Screenwriter as God!." Mike Ovitz told him his Wilshire Blvd. "foot soldiers" would hunt him down. He's antagonized almost everyone at the top in Tinseltown. And now, Joe Eszterhas tells everything he knows - in brief, quotable bursts - about the business, the history of Hollywood, and how to write screenplays that make millions. Idiosyncratic, gruff and as shaggy as Eszterhas himself, "The Devil's Guide to Hollywood" makes a character/leitmotif of Eszterhas' fellow Hungarian Zsa Zsa Gabor ("Money is like a sixth sense that makes it possible for you to fully enjoy the other five."), and makes the case that Marilyn Monroe was the sharpest tack in Hollywood ("Hollywood is a place where they'll pay you a thousand dollars for a kiss and fifty cents for your soul. I know, because I turned down the first offer often enough and held out for the fifty cents."). Refreshing, dirty, tough, there's no book like it. - Books Inc. • Adapting the Epic: The Making of Atlas Shrugged the Movie "The whole theme of the movie is, really, human evil," says Brian O'Toole, the screenwriter behind Atlas Shrugged Part I, the feature adaptation of Ayn Rand's influential novel. "And human evil springs from good intentions." O'Toole and producer Harmon Kaslow tell Reason.tv what viewers can expect to see in the movie, which covers the first of three sections in Rand's novel. "This movie really comes across as a very empowering movie for women," says Kaslow. "It's about a woman who takes on a lot of forces working against her." The movie is set in a dystopian near-future, and the story follows Dagny Taggart, a railroad executive who faces a crisis when one of her trains is derailed. While Dagny tries to improve the railway by collaborating with Hank Rearden, an entrepreneur who's developed a new kind of metal, her brother James Taggart conspires with government officials and crony capitalists who are bent on taking Rearden down. "To me, this was the underdog story," says O'Toole. Atlas Shrugged Part 1 hits theaters April 15. Produced by Hawk Jensen and Ted Balaker. Camera by Zach Weissmueller and Jensen, who also edited. • SHELDON TURNER Screenwriting Lesson Sheldon Turner is the prototype for the smart, brash, ambitious young screenwriter - only he's also got a law degree from NYU and has had his fiction published in the New Yorker. Turner recently broke through with his script for the 2005 remake of The Longest Yard, starring Chris Rock and Adam Sandler, and he has half a dozen other scripts in development. He's got insane discipline, writes longhand, and boycotts email. He figured out how to work the system, and he's got more witty axioms for how to play the Hollywood game than a Tropicana craps dealer at 3 am. But you'll just have to hear Turner talk to get it - what being the biggest guy in the room can do for you, how to read an audience, what to say in pitch meetings, and why you should let everyone know that you think Lost in Translation sucks.

  • Screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg Interview TWILIGHT: NEW MOON - The Twilight Saga: New Moon for more movie news, reviews and exclusive interviews, check As I wrote this summer when I posted my exclusive Comic-Con interview with The Twilight Saga screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg (bit.ly she has the difficult task of trying to bring Stephanie Meyers insanely popular book series to the screen. So while writing any movie is difficult, writing one that has so many passionate and knowledgeable fans is taking it another level. Luckily for her, the Twilight fans Ive spoken with have really enjoyed her work and are anxiously awaiting the sequels. When I spoke to Melissa Rosenberg a few months ago we talked about how the increased budget changed the way she writes and what did she have to edit out of books two and three to make them into movies. This time I decided to ask about her reaction to watching New Moon, has she seen any of Eclipse, who came up with the way to keep Rob Pattinson in the movie as a ghost-type image, and I also tried to find out, hypothetically speaking, if she thinks more would have to make greater changed for the fourth book in the series, Breaking Dawn. I also asked if she has an opinion on Breaking Dawn being two movies. If youre a fan of The Twilight Saga, youll love the interview. Here's what we talked about: --What was her reaction to seeing the film for the first time --How hard has it been to find the voice of the movie versus the fans expectations --Who came up with the way to keep Rob Pattison in the movie as a ghost type ...

  • JIM UHLS Screenwriting Lesson Jim Uhls is not your average screenwriter. For one thing, his nickname is "Professor Peculiar." For another, as this exclusive off-kilter discussion of his craft demonstrates, Uhls is eager to break the first rule of Fight Club: He talks about Fight Club. A lot. That seminal film, directed by David Fincher (Se7en, Panic Room), pushed every boundary possible for a studio movie, and Uhls' darkly funny script, adapted from the Chuck Palahniuk novel, is a wickedly subversive example of how to successfully adapt an "unadaptable" book. Step inside the mind of the man who figured out how to do it, as Professor Peculiar explains how to use a newspaper story approach to build a brilliant pitch, why you should interview your characters, how to know when to "stick a fork" in your screenplay, and the macabre particulars of how and why he had to murder his brother's cat. • Robsten Update: Twi-Saga Screenwriter Interview - Follow Us! Do Twilight fans hoping Robsten is the real deal just need to back off? At least one very important person involved in the Twi-saga thinks these two need a little space. Hello everyone-coming to you from our Beverly Hills ClevverTV headquarters I'm Joslyn Davis. Now, It's no secret that Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart have incredible on-screen chemistry. But as of late, fans and the media have become completely obsessed with whether or not ROBSTEN keeps that chemistry going when the cameras stop rolling. Well according to Melissa Rosenberg, the screenwriter for the Twi-saga, onlookers are probably just a bit confused. She says that the chemistry between the two actors is extraordinary and notes that the casting of the pair was beautifully done. But she says that people should just enjoy what's onscreen and let ROBSTEN lead their private lives in peace. When asked whether or not Rosenberg thinks they are a real-life couple, she says that she doesn't actually know WHAT they are...hmmm sounds a little bit suspicious if you ask me. But maybe Rosenberg is right-maybe ROBSTEN need a little air to breath. Other Twilight cast members, like Kellan Lutz say that poor Robert can't move an inch without being bombarded by the paparazzi. Perhaps the overwhelming media attention is the reason that Rob and K-stew didn't walk the red carpet or sit in the audience at the VMAs. But they still made a big splash at the awards show. And there were some up-close ...

  • Screenwriter David Mamet on the Hollywood Impact of Being a Conservative You may know him as the Oscar-nominated 'Wag the Dog' screenplay writer, among a slew of other A-list productions. Wednesday morning, David Mamet spoke with Gretchen Carlson about "coming out" as a conservative in the Left-leaning Tinseltown. When asked what changed his mind on liberal vs. conservative policies, Mamet said it all boiled down to numbers. "I started looking at my checkbook, and I learned a little bit of mathematics ... I realized there's only so much money that a business has, that a family has, that a government has. And if you spend it on thing A, you can't spend it on thing B." Mamet hasn't been impervious to the impact of his politics on work opportunities. In Hollywood, Mamet says there is what he calls a "herd mentality." "It's a liberal town," Mamet said, "and the essence of liberalism as I understand it, in its aspect of being a religion, is that you have to protect the lie."
