  • Scolopendra gigantea, Peruvian giant centipede hifi Scolopendra gigantea, Peruvian giant centipede is one of the largest species of centipedes in the world. It has reliably obtained 9-10"/22-25cm body length and reputably achieved 12-14"/30-35cm! As the name implies, this centipede can be found in Peru and in other parts of the Amazon. Heavy restrictions on the invertebrate trade from most/all of the countries of origin of the beautiful species ensure that they remain rare in USA collections... but when you can find one to view they are simply amazing! This centipede is at least 9"/22cm long in the body. If you count its antenna and long hind legs this centipede can stretch an amazing 14"/36cm! A fellow local bughead was kind enough to let me play with his gigantea, which is very fortunate for me as i will likely never be able to afford the $300+ (USD2007) that this specimen would go for on the open USA market. The bite of this species is likely very unpleasant, but in no way deadly to humans. There is not a lot written about centipede envenomations and even less about envenomations by this pracking huge species. I was very tempted to test this venom on myself... but the large unknown factor and the fact i drove myself to the Bugfair where i handled this pede convinced me that discretion is probably the better part of valor... for now! nb there is some confusion in the hobby world about just what exactly to call this species, scientifically. For a while there were VERY large centipedes from South America being sold ...

  • Centipede (Scolopendra subspinipes) Molting: Part 1 of 2 Over the past few days, our giant centipede had been turning a faded tan color. I made sure his tank was sprayed so that molting would be easier. There were some "complications"; a little bit of his molt split off and had gotten stuck in his midsection. He was a very patient boy while we carefully peeled back the remaining bit. Watching this whole process up-close and personal has helped me a bit with my slight fear of giant 'pedes. I've always found them to be beautiful, but even I have some irrational buggy fear. :P .... I'm really not sure why we were whispering. We're dumb.
  • Centipede (Scolopendra subspinipes) Molting: Part 2 of 2 I don't know why we were whispering in the first and second parts, lol. We're dumb. • 百足Mukade Japanese Giant Centipede - Scolopendra subspinipes mutilans Centipedes are fascinating creatures with a long history as one of the planet's most successful invertebrate predators. Centipedes typically shun the light of day and will most often be found resting safe under rocks, logs and other dark and damp places until night falls and they come out to hunt and find mates. The Japanese Giant Centipede is an animal worthy of respect, and wise Japanese farmers know to handle these animals with caution when they encounter them in the field or discover the leggy animal within their futon bedding. Centipedes are called mukade (百足) or omukade in Japanese and the king of all mukade in Japan is certainly the Japanese Giant Centipede (Scolopendra subspinipes mutilans). Scolopendra centipedes can live as long as 10 years though it takes nearly 4 years for them to reach adult size. Centipedes of this group can grow to a length of 19 centimeters (7.5 inches) and are found in warm climates throughout the world. These large centipedes are popular as terrarium animals and are often sold under the name Vietnamese Centipede.

  • Scolopendra heros heros centipede eating a scorpion Scolopendra heros centipedes chase down scorpion species in their range and is natural prey for them. Here's a very young one chasing down a Centruroides vittatus scorpion. The sting doesn't seem to bother them much unless they are stung around the head area. But even when that happens they seem fine after a while. These scorpions are interesting but they are also a pest around here, so many of them. The centipede is captive born.

Scolopendromorpha" by Dr. Graf Attems. For many farmers known as the most beautiful pigmented species. Sam I admit that this is a colored species najokazalej I've ever seen, but unfortunately not available in trade at the moment, Europe has it a person with whom I know. The uniqueness of this species is due to an exceptionally bright and contrasting coloration, alternating red and dark orange and deep black segments with distinct boundary between them, complemented by dark orange turning to red legs, the last two pairs at the ends of the endearingly dark. Adults reach up to 16cm in length. Antennas count 17 or 18 members, of which the first 6-7 is shiny. Occurrence Species are extremely popular in the south Indian peninsula and is very rare on the islands of Nicobar and very, very rare in Sumatra. • Scolopendra heros, arizonensis colorform: Handle & About hi Scolopendra heros, arizonensis colorform. This is one of the largest and most brightly colored of the native USA giant centipedes. This species can reliably achieve 7"/18cm bodylength and is on record achieving 10"/25cm bodylength... with even longer specimens possibly existing in the wild! I do not believe this species to be medically significant in the venom is possesses, and no prophylatcic treatments are prescribed in the medical literature i have read, though several suggestions are made for remedies to the pain a bite produces :) This specimen is 6-7"/16-18cm in bodylength and is wild caught. It is probably 5-10 years old. It's name is "Jack, the Pumpkin King" but i do not know its ***. [UPLOADED FROM A 43MB WMV MADE IN MS MOVIEMAKER]

  • Giant centipede eating mouse 2 This is another species of giant centipede, a full-grown scolopendra viridicornis killing and eating a mouse. Centipedes have very poor eyesight and this mouse was very adept at staying out of harms way so we had to use a long feather to help it out a little. I certainly would not have had to if I didn't have a large piece of wood in its habitat. Note that the centipede is very ambidextrous and actually catches the prey with its hind legs first, and then doesn't bite it until it has located it's throat. ***I've grown very tired of reading posts from people, who, despite being outraged by it watch anyways, and then, in a fit of internet bravado cannot resist the urge to write some asinine comment.
