  • Comparison of Scintillation of Laser pointer and collimated LED over a 24km path This video demonstrates the scintillation experienced across a 24km atmospheric path using a standard Class II red laser pointer (with a beam exit diameter of a few millimeters) as compared to the light from a high-power red LED collimated to a diameter of about 20cm. As can be seen, the collimated LED light is far less disrupted than that of the laser and is likely to be able to more-easily convey information. If the laser had been collimated to a larger diameter the scintillation effects would have been reduced, but other testing has shown that given equal beam diameters, the noncoherent light from the LED is far-less affected than that of the laser. For this video, an 8" (20cm) reflector telescope was used in conjunction with a CCD video camera. The "bounce" that may be seen in the image (particularly that of the LED) was due to wind buffeting the telescope and the slight differences in image diameter were as a result of having to reconfigure between the different segments of the video. For a more-complete description of these effects, go to the web site:

  • ET'S use star scintillation as camouflage Scintillation is a night time occurence when any light, usually a star or an aircraft, rapidly flashes different colours. They will be low on the horizon on a cold night, as it is caused by ice crystals in the atmosphere. Here is an example of what star scintillation looks like. I've also included footage of a planet, because they aren't meant to scintillate. If you look on my channel you'll see what sort of stuff uses scintillation as camouflage. Get out there with your own camera and start filming stars, aeroplanes and planets so you know what they look like. Practice using a post or a tree to steady your shot. Then one night you might come across something that doesn't fit. For example, if a "star" is particularly brilliant, has lines moving across it, or objects shooting out of it, you know you're on to something!

  • Scintillation (astronomy) - Blinking stars - Twinkling stars Scintillation or twinkling are generic terms for rapid variations in apparent brightness or color of a distant luminous object viewed through the atmosphere. If the object lies outside the earth's atmosphere, as in the case of stars and planets, the phenomenon is termed astronomical scintillation; if the luminous source lies within the atmosphere, the phenomenon is termed terrestrial scintillation. As one of the three principal factors governing astronomical seeing, scintillation is defined as variations in illuminance only, and so twinkling does not cause blurring of astronomical images. It is clearly established that almost all scintillation effects are caused by anomalous refraction caused by small-scale fluctuations in air density usually related to temperature gradients. Normal wind motion transporting such fluctuations across the observer's line of sight produces the irregular changes in intensity characteristic of scintillation. The primary cause of such small scale fluctuations is turbulent mixing of air with different temperatures. Scintillation effects are always much more pronounced near the horizon than near the zenith (straight up). Parcels of the order of only centimeters to decimeters are believed to produce most of the scintillatory irregularities in the atmosphere. Atmospheric scintillation is measured quantitatively using a scintillometer. Scintillation effects are reduced by using a larger receiver aperture. This effect is known as aperture averaging.

A wonderful resource for a look at the history of radiation is the Health Physics Museum at . The museum is operated by the Oak Ridge Associated Universities, offers a wide range of technical and regulatory information. The museum has a very large inventory of instruments and radiation related items, including descriptions and photographs, that date back to the Manhattan Project. However, it also offers an extensive Health Physics Resources page with information and links to answer the full range of radiation related questions. Another good source of information on radiation is the website (and downloadable book) Radiation, People and the Environment ( ) provides a comprehensive look at ionizing radiation. Produced by the IAEA in close co-operation with the UK National Radiological Protection Board, this provides a broad overview on the subject of ionizing radiation, its effects and uses, as well as the measures in place to ensure it can be used safely. The entire film, Everyday Radioactivity, is available at the Internet Archives.
