- Potentially Fatal Salmonella Infections from Pet Turtles Turtles may look like cute pets, but it is estimated that they are responsible for over 70000 cases of Salmonella infections every year in this country. Some of these infections can be serious or even fatal. In one case, a four week-old infant died of a Salmonella infection that was traced to a pet turtle in the home. In another case, two ***age girls became very ill after they swam in an unchlorinated family pool where pet turtles had been allowed to swim. Children, people with compromised immune systems, the elderly and pregnant women are especially susceptible to Salmonella infections. In addition to their susceptibility from an immune standpoint, young children are at high risk because they are likely to handle the turtles, and then without washing their hands, handle food or touch their mouths, which increases the possibility of ingesting the bacteria. It does not require touching the turtle to be exposed to the Salmonella, because the turtle sporadically sheds the bacteria into its water and housing. So people cleaning the turtles bowl can become infected, too. Salmonella is also carried by other reptiles and amphibians. FDAs primary recommendation is to not buy small turtles as pets or gifts. For those who already own a turtle, reptile, or amphibian, here are some basic rules to help prevent illness: • If your family is expecting a child, remove the animal from the home before the baby arrives. • Keep turtles out of homes with children under five, the elderly, or ...

- Pet Turtles and Salmonella FDA is warning parents that turtles can be a source of Salmonellosis, and so they're not suitable pets in households with small children. In fact, FDA has banned the sale of small turtles since 1975 because of the Salmonella risk. Salmonella are carried routinely in the GI tract of the turtle. The turtle shows no signs of infection and then sporadically will shed the bacteria. Turtles with Salmonella usually do not appear sick in any way. Of course anybody can catch salmonella, but when the infection occurs in infants or small children, it can be more serious. Also, young children are likely to handle their pets and then, without washing their hands, they handle food or touch their mouths, and of course, that increases the possibility of ingesting the bacteria. Salmonella infection can also be especially serious in the elderly, pregnant women and people with compromised immune systems, including chemotherapy and transplant patients. Turtles in settings such as daycare facilities and petting zoos can also carry salmonella, so parents should thoroughly wash their children's hands with soap and water after they've done the handling. The bottom line is that turtles are not suitable pets in households with young children, the elderly or immuno-compromised people. Remember that the salmonella carried by these animals can be a serious threat to health.

Many milder cases are not diagnosed or reported, so the actual number of infections may be up to thirty times greater. In some cases, severe illness may occur which requires medical attention and hospitalization. Usually, people get salmonella by eating contaminated food. Foods of animal origin may be contaminated with Salmonella, so people should not eat raw or undercooked meats. It is very important to note that most products contaminated with Salmonella do not taste or look any different than normal. Animals can also carry Salmonella and pass it on in their feces. Therefore, people can get salmonella if they do not wash their hands after contact with the feces of animals. If you have a compromised immune system, avoid contact with most exotic animals and even farm animals to avoid contamination of salmonella.
- FDA Looks Beyond Tomatoes for Salmonella Cause SelectPlusFDA Looks Beyond Tomatoes for Salmonella CauseFDA Looks Beyond Tomatoes for Salmonella CauseThe Associated PressCilantro, Serrano peppers and jalapenos are among the types of fresh produce investigators are checking in addition to tomatoes as they search for the cause of a salmonella outbreak. (July 6)The Food and Drug administration has expanded the list of foods it's looking into as possible culprits in a salmonella outbreak that has sickened nearly 950 Americans. At least 130 people have been hospitalized. Tomatoes have been the prime suspect in the outbreak that began over a month ago. FDA investigators aren't saying what other vegetables they're looking at, but officials do say they're looking at items that are regularly served with fresh tomatoes. That includes serrano peppers.. Jalapenos.... And salsa. Fresh quacamole is also on the list. Some patients have told the Centers for Disease Control that they ate raw tomatoes in fresh salsa and quacamole. The FDA says there are several possible reasons for the outbreak. The produce could have shared a common shipping or packaging site. Multiple foods could have been contaminated while growing at adjoining farms. They might have also been tainted by a common water source. The government has expanded its search because people continue to get sick, even after the initial warnings that tomatoes were the source of the salmonella outbreak. ___ ___, The Associated Press.

Brands produced by Wright County Egg include: Albertsons, Boomsma's, Dutch Farms, Farm Fresh, Hillandale, Kemps, Lucerne, Lund, Mountain Dairy, Ralph's, Shoreland, Sunshine, Trafficanda, James Farms, Glenview and Pacific Coast. A statement by the Egg Safety Center said that plants producing affected eggs include P-1026, P-1413 and P-1946, but have since grown to include P-1720 and P-1942. The center cautioned customers to look for the three-digit code on egg cartons that range from 136 to 229, since those eggs are most likely affected with salmonella.
- Salmonella Cause Still Uncertain SelectPlusSalmonella Cause Still UncertainSalmonella Cause Still UncertainThe Associated PressThe government's food safety chief says tomatoes may not be the cause of the recent salmonella outbreak that has made hundreds of people sick across the country. (July 2)[Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] It might not be the tomatoes after all. The government's food safety chief says tomatoes aren't totally off the hook for the nation's salmonella outbreak ... but it might have been caused by something else. The reason government experts think tomatoes might not be the culprit -- people continue to get sick. Nearly 900 people have gotten ill because of the salmonella outbreak -- which first started nearly three months ago. Recently, 179 people got sick in June ... Well after warnings about tomatoes were issued. Tomatoes became the primary suspect after case-control studies in New Mexico and Texas -- conducted right after the outbreak started. But since people are still getting sick ...disease detectives are now exploring whether tomatoes and other produce are sharing a common packing or shipping site where both might become contaminated. Another possibility -- common water sources could be contaminated. Pressure is mounting on the Food and Drug Administration to solve the case ... Since the tomato industry has suffered millions of dollars in losses. Some tomato growers are also asking Congress to investigate how the FDA handled the outbreak. ___ ___, The Associated Press.(****END****) ANCHOR ...

- Potentially Fatal Salmonella Infections from Pet Turtles Turtles may look like cute pets, but they could be responsible for over 70000 cases of salmonella infections every year in this country. Turtles commonly carry the Salmonella bacteria, and although the turtle doesn't get sick, people can become very ill if they're exposed to a contaminated turtle. Also, young children are likely to handle the turtles, and then handle food or touch their mouths, and of course that increases the chance of taking in the bacteria. But FDA's warning isn't just about children. People with weakened immune systems, the elderly and pregnant women are also at high risk. Here's what FDA is recommending: •Don't buy small turtles as pets or as gifts.
