  • Apple variety Ribston Pippin Ribston Pippin is a famous, genetically and historically significant apple variety which also looks and tastes excellent. First grown in Yorkshire from a seed brought from Rouen in Normandy, France, in about 1688, as far as my sources can say. That's over 400 years ago. The original tree was grown at Ribston hall, Knaresborough, Yorkshire, and blew down in 1810 but was supported by stakes and continued to fruit until 1835. I find it quite awesome to think that the 20 Ribston Pippin trees in my orchard have all come via grafting from the progeny of that original tree. It is a triploid tree, which usually means (as with triploid apples Bramley and Suntan) strong vigour and potentially difficult pollination. The fruits are liable to suden drop at harvest time according to the books, which we find to be true. Today (28th August) I have picked most of them, we will pick the rest tomorrow, although they will need to ripen for a few weeks before good to eat. They need careful watching and picking just as they start falling, we find last week August, first week September as a rule. This will vary for region and climate. Edward Bunyard said that these apples are ready to eat much earlier than the textbooks say (October to December) and I agree. Best eaten mid September to mid November. A beautiful, if asymetrical and slightly russeted, fruit with great flavour. Deserves to be more widely grown. If you insist on trying to raise a new apple from a pip, this one has proven great ...
