Urban Runoff Simple steps toward reducing urban runoff.
Afghans dismiss runoff vote - 23 Oct 09 In Afghanistan, preparations are under way for a runoff vote between Hamid Karzai, the incumbent president, and Abdullah Abdullah, his rival. The original poll was tainted by evidence of mass fraud and corruption and disrupted by threats and Taliban violence. As Jonah Hull reports from Kabul, the capital, that has left many Afghans less than enthusiastic about the prospects for the second round.
Afghanistan Runoff Election Welcomed By Obama PRESIDENT OBAMA: Hello, everybody. Before I discuss the meeting that I've just had with Prime Minister Maliki I just want to make a brief statement about Afghanistan. I had the opportunity to speak with President Karzai this morning and I wanted to congratulate him on accepting the certification of the recent election. As we all know, this has been a very difficult time in Afghanistan to not only carry out a election under difficult circumstances, where there were a whole host of security issues that had to be resolved, but also post-election a lot of uncertainty. President Karzai, as well as the other candidates, I think have shown that they have the interest of the Afghan people at heart, that this is a reflection of a commitment to rule of law, and an insistence that the Afghan people's will should be done. And so I expressed the American people's appreciation for this step. As I mentioned before, this has been a difficult election. You have violent forces opposed to democracy in Afghanistan. And yet despite these very difficult conditions what we've seen is elections take place; we have now seen the IEC and the ECC in Afghanistan complete their work; we have seen the candidates expressing a willingness to abide by constitutional law, and there is a path forward in order to complete this election process. I want to give particular thanks to Ambassador Karl Eikenberry and his team, who have been working tirelessly throughout this process. I also want to commend Senator ...
Natural Science Commercial: Coastal Runoff Runoff from streets, drains, and rivers has been polluting the beaches of southern California for decades. Approximately 80% of the pollution in the marine environment comes from land-based sources such as runoff and pollution. Beaches all across California have streams, rivers and creeks that run into the shoreline, draining straight into the ocean. Aliso Creek State Beach in Laguna Beach, California dumps thousands of pounds of street runoff and untreated toxic waste into the ocean. Aliso Creek suffers from constant closures due to sewage spills, contaminations and various other pollution problems. It's ironic that the wealthiest county in the nation has the most polluted beaches. Doheny State Beach in Dana Point, California, a few miles south of Aliso Creek has permanent danger signs for contaminated water. The beach is permanently closed due to the possible presence of E Coli in the water, although this is a very popular beach in the summertime. The standard for E Coli in drinking water is 0parts per million, which means that if any e coli is found, the water is considered undrinkable. In California, particularly Orange County, the swimming regulations allow for 5% contamination in coastal waters. If ingested, the ocean water could potentially lead to e coli poisoning, and much more serious illnesses. During the summer months, the storm drains and sewage pipes that lead to Doheney are blocked off with a sand-made barrier. This sewage and runoff piles up, festers in ...
How Instant Runoff Voting works 2.0: Multiple winners Video by: Curtis Gilbert and Molly Bloom When you apply Instant Runoff Voting to an election with multiple winners, things get complicated. Voters still rank their choices 1, 2, 3, etc., but figuring out the winners requires long division. Minneapolis elections officials will have to use math like this to figure out who will sit on its Park Board seats and the Board of Estimate and Taxation. The vote counting, which must be done by hand, is expected to take weeks.

Stormwater Runoff 101 Urban runoff is a main source of pollution at beaches across the United States. But solutions, known collectively as "green infrastructure" can reduce the amount of polluted water flowing into our oceans, rivers and lakes. These techniques, which are available today, range from green roofs to permeable pavement and roadside plantings. It's a green wave of urban planning that's making for cleaner blue waters. To find if your beaches are clean, please go to to explore NRDC's 20th Testing the Waters beachwater quality guide.
NATURE | Frogs: The Thin Green Line | Chemical Runoff | P... Tyrone Hayes and his students from the University of California at Berkeley are studying how agricultural chemicals, including fertilizers and pesticides, are affecting the health of frogs. Pesticides in runoff can cause an increase in stress hormones and lead to immunosuppression in frogs. In some cases Hayes has found that the presence of atrazine, a common agricultural chemical, can even cause frogs that are genetically male to develop as females and produce eggs. Urban Runoff In Los Angeles, most of the rain water is sent to the ocean. Along the way, water runoff picks up pollutants, trash, fertilizers and pesticides. This liquid waste is the single largest source of water pollution into the ocean, giving Los Angeles some of the most polluted beaches in California. Every Wednesday morning, students from Santa Monica High School collect water samples at one of many urban runoffs responsible for pouring over 100 million gallons of contaminated water into the ocean each day. Santa Monica High School and Surfrider Foundation teamed up to create Teach & Test, a program aimed at raising awareness of water quality issues at Los Angeles beaches. As they later ***yze in their lab the water samples collected at the beach that day, student findings demonstrate that bacteria levels are calling for the city to put up an advisory. Finally, students suggest a number of solutions to avoid water runoff and save the ocean.
