JULY 2007 - RISK - THE SEVENTH DAY PROJECT In a career spanning twenty-six years, graffiti artist RISK has impacted the evolution of street writing as an artform here in Los Angeles and worldwide. His signature tag ran on the subway cars of New York, becoming the first writer outside of New York to be recognized by the same legendary graffiti artists who inspired him early on. In LA RISK continued to push the limits further than they had ever gone before by bombing what would later be referred to in the graffiti world as a heaven on freeway overpasses and other highly visible spots throughout the city gaining much notoriety for his unique style. At the peak of his career he took graffiti from the streets and into the gallery with the launch of the Third Rail series of art shows; he later parlayed the Third Rail brand into the first authentic line of graffiti-inspired clothing. Before hed ever heard of graffiti, RISK was unconsciously writing it. As a child, he filled sketchbook after sketchbook with images, not just of people and things but also letters. He even had spray paint in his hand before ever applying it to a wall, using it to paint BMX bikes. Even back then I think I was addicted to spray paint, he recalls. I just loved painting with it. In describing this exhibition, he states: "Twenty-Six is a collection letters that I painted as if I were painting on the streets, using what paint and materials I had in my studio. Risk: The Neural Basis of Decision Making Lecture presented by Professor John O'Doherty for the Darwin College Lecture Series 2010. A deeper understanding of how the brain makes decisions will not only inspire new theories of decision making, it will also contribute to the development of genuine artificial intelligence, and it will enable us to understand why some humans are better than others at making decisions, why humans with certain psychiatric and neurological disorders are less capable of doing so, and why under some circumstances humans systematically fail to make rational decisions. Most decisions made in everyday life are taken for the purposes of increasing our well-being, whether it is deciding what item to choose off a restaurant menu, or deliberating over what career path to follow. Prominent amongst these is the value or utility of each decision option, which indicates how advantageous a particular option is likely to be for our future well-being. Another relevant signal present in the brain is the riskiness attached to a particular decision option, which can influence the decision making mechanism according to ones own individual preferences (whether one is risk-seeking or risk-averse).

Google Tech Talks July 9, 2008 ABSTRACT In a perfect world, Software would be secure and we would not have to care about vulnerabilites that can get exploited while surfing the Internet.However, given that Google found more than 3 million malicious web addresses that try a drive-by download infection on the visitor's web browser, it's better to have a close look at the risk that our users are exposed to when surfing the web. This talk gives an ***ysis of how well vendors like Microsoft and Apple are performing regarding fixing reported software vulnerabilities. A strong indicator for the performance is the number of patches, which were not available when a vulnerability was publicly disclosed. The fluctuations in the patching speed also reveals interesting engineering related facts of the companies ***yzed. Further more, the talk compares how well Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari and Opera users are doing in terms of following the best practice to always use the latest most secure Web browser version. By extracting browser versions from the user-agent strings in Google's web logs it was found that that more than 600 million Internet users worldwide don't follow this best practice. Risk, Security and Terrorism Part of the Darwin College Lecture Series 2010. Social scientists tell us we now live that we live in a world risk society. But what does this really mean and what, if anything, do environmental risks, health risks, and natural disasters have in common with those posed by terrorism? When we move from the natural world to human threats are we still dealing with hard science or are we in the realm of speculation? Are the presumptions behind risk based counter-terrorism policies and the profiling of terrorist suspects safe? Terrorist acts are exceptionally rare but they pose the risk of catastrophic harm. No surprise then that we consent to intrusive measures that erode civil liberties in the name of avoiding such harms. The conceit of balancing liberty and security assumes that by degrading liberty we can reduce risk. In place of balancing might we do better to ask what really is at risk in the war on terror? We think of the risks posed by terrorism primarily in terms of subjective insecurity and threat to life and property. But countering terrorism carries its own risks risks to social, political, and economic life and risks to rights (rights to freedom of speech, to privacy, and to freedom of the person). Add to this the risk of marginalising and alienating those we target and we are in danger of allowing responses to terrorism to generate a whole slew of new risks. So my question is what risks are at stake and how we might live with risk without living in terror.
