  • Obama Administration Considering PER MILE TRAVEL TAX CBO: Taxing mileage a 'practical option' for revenue enhancement The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) this week released a report that said taxing people based on how many miles they drive is a possible option for raising new revenues and that these taxes could be used to offset the costs of highway maintenance at a time when federal funds are short. The report discussed the proposal in great detail, including the development of technology that would allow total vehicle miles traveled (VMT) to be tracked, reported and taxed, as well as the pros and cons of mandating the installation of this technology in all vehicles. "In the past, the efficiency costs of implementing a system of VMT charges — particularly the costs of users' time for slowing and queuing at tollbooths — would clearly have outweighed the potential benefits from more efficient use of highway capacity," CBO wrote. "Now, electronic metering and billing are making per-mile charges a practical option." The report was requested by Senate Budget Committee Chairman Kent Conrad (DN.D.), who held a hearing on transportation funding in early March. In that hearing, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said the Obama administration is hoping to spend $556 billion over the next six years, much of which would go to federal transportation improvement projects. Conrad said in response that federal funds are tight, and in asking for recommendations on how to raise that money, he noted the possibility of a VMT tax as a way ...

  • The Laffer Curve, Part III: Dynamic Scoring A video by CF&P Foundation that builds on the discussion of theory in Part I and evidence in Part II, this concluding video in the series on the Laffer Curve explains how the Joint Committee on Taxation's revenue-estimating process is based on the absurd theory that changes in tax policy - even dramatic reforms such as a flat tax - do not effect economic growth. In other words, the current system assumes the Laffer Curve does not exist. Because of congressional budget rules, this leads to a bias for tax increases and against tax cuts. The video explains that "static scoring" should be replaced with "dynamic scoring" so that lawmakers will have more accurate information when making decisions about tax policy. • Search Engine Marketing News | Yahoo's Revenues Continue to Fall The latest Search Engine Marketin news from Weboptimiser... It becomes even more clear as yahoo shares continue to fall that shortly they are bound to be the target of a takeover bid sometime soon Although Yahoo's fourth-quarter earnings more than doubled, the Internet company's revenue crumbles, showing that it's still struggling to cash in on online advertising. With less money coming into the company, Yahoo has laid off more than 700 workers in the past two months. The latest cutbacks came Tuesday, with Yahoo laying off 100 to 150 employees, roughly 1% from a work force that totalled 13600 people at the end of December. Yahoos chief financial officer Tim Morse says "We are on the right path... We are transitioning into a different company, and that is going to take some time." Yahoo predicted its net revenue during the first quarter will decline by 4% to 10% from last year. I,ll be back in a few seconds with some more related news, hang on... If it wasn't for the cutbacks and the Microsoft partnership, Morse said Yahoo's fourth-quarter revenue would have increased by 2% to 3% from the prior year. Even if it had that additional revenue, Yahoo would still be far behind other Internet companies that have more attractive services for marketers. As yahoo continues its decline Google and Facebook, in particular, have been growing rapidly during the same period. Google's revenue rose 26% in the fourth quarter to $8.4 billion — surpassing Yahoo's total of $6.3 billion for the ...

While the theory behind the Laffer Curve is widely accepted, the concept has become very controversial because politicians on both sides of the debate exaggerate. This video, focusing on the theory of the Laffer Curve, is Part I of a three-part series. Part II reviews evidence of Laffer-Curve responses. Part III discusses how the revenue-estimating process in Washington can be improved. For more information please visit the Center for Freedom and Prosperity's web site:

  • Obama: Raise Taxes, Capital Gains - "For Purposes of Fairness" Obama wants to raise the Capital Gains Tax "for purposes of fairness", even if we collect less money and run up more debt that China will buy up. This goes contrary to what he was saying about the "Bank of China Credit Card", and the part about paying down "some of this debt". • Strait of Magellan - Estrecho de Magallanes The Strait of Magellan (often referred to as the Straits of Magellan and rarely as the Magellanic Strait) comprises a navigable sea route immediately south of mainland Chile and north of Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego. The waterway is the most important natural passage between the Pacific and the Atlantic oceans, but it is considered a difficult route to navigate because of the inhospitable climate and the narrowness of the passage. Ferdinand Magellan (the original name, in Portuguese, Fernão de Magalhães), a Portuguese sailor in service to the Spanish King, became the first European to navigate the strait in 1520, during his global circumnavigation voyage. Because Magellan's ships entered it on November 1, All Saints' Day, it was originally named Estrecho de Todos los Santos (Strait of All Saints). Later the Spanish king changed the name to Estrecho de Magallanes in honor of Magellan. Since its discovery the Spanish Empire and the Kingdom of Chile saw it as its southern boundary. The first Spanish colonization attempt was led by Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa who founded Nombre de Jesús and Rey Don Felipe on its northern shores. The cities suffered severe food shortages, and years afterwards in 1587 the English navigator Sir Thomas Cavendish landed at the site of Rey Don Felipe and found only ruins of the settlement. He renamed the place Port Famine. Other early explorers included Francis Drake. The strait was first carefully explored and thoroughly charted by Phillip Parker ...
