Rep. Levin - Extending Unemployment Compensation The House has just passed the Emergency Extended Unemployment Compensation Act, HR 5749. The legislation will immediately provide up to 13 weeks of extended unemployment benefits in every state to workers exhausting the 26 weeks of regular unemployment benefits, providing much-needed relief to 3.8 million unemployed workers to assist them with rapidly rising gas and food costs, while they continue to struggle to find work in the slowing economy. Rep. Sandy Levin spoke in favor.

Rep Levin on the Small Business Paperwork Mandate "Let's be clear what the issue is today. The issue is not repeal of this provision of 1099. We on this side not only favor repeal but all of us who were here last session voted for it. We voted to repeal it. It failed because only two people on the then-minority side voted for the bill. They didn't like the pay-for. Mr. Camp mentions the NFIB. They supported our effort last year to repeal 1099. So again, the issue is not repeal, we have made that clear in the past. The effort to repeal was blocked on the Republican side last session. The reason they did not vote yes, they said, was because they did not like the pay-for. The pay-for closed tax loopholes. Closed tax loopholes. And they stood up and said, no, we can't vote for the bill because of that. Ironically, most of the loopholes closed in that effort have now become law. So that effort last year to block repeal essentially was to block the loophole effort that has now become the law of this land. So that should be clear, the issue is not repeal. The issue is how you pay for the repeal. The Senate has now voted to repeal 1099. Apparently, the now-majority does not like the pay-for in the Senate bill. So what does this bill provide? Well, in very simple terms, in clear terms, in unmistakable terms, the pay-for is an increase on middle-income families. It increases how much they will have to pay to the IRS if their income increases over what was projected when they would have obtained health insurance."

Unemployment benefits extended by President Barack Obama, locals don't feel better EASTERN IDAHO - Late Thursday night, President Barack Obama signed an $18 billion dollar bill to extend unemployment benefits for another two months. Will this help the unemployed here in Eastern Idaho? Yes and no. It doesn't change the amount of money you can get from unemployed benefits. But it does change how long you have to qualify. "I'm hoping to get a job," said unemployed Derek Moore. "Not so good right now," said unemployed Mike Whitman. You've heard of the Great Depression, well, the Idaho Department of Labor says this is the "Great Recession." "This has been the Great Recession. It really has. It's been a really difficult time for a lot of people," said Mike Whitman, a manager at the Department of Labor. Before the recession, most people wouldn't go 12 weeks without work. But because that number has climbed so high, they've extended those benefits. "We've had some tremendous people with degrees with many years of training that have been affected in this recession. Those individuals it does affect their self esteem when they normally go back to work within 12 weeks and some have gone almost 2 years without returning to work," said Whitman. And Obama's signature on a bill that extends unemployment benefits for two months wasn't much of a cheer-me-up to the jobless here. "I don't see how things are going to pickup anytime soon," said Moore. "It's rough. It's real tough finding a job right now," said Whitman. "What sort of job are you looking for?" I asked Moore ...

Levin on Returning Bonuses to Taxpayers As a result of extraordinary abuses of the public trust by companies rewarding employees with excessive compensation while receiving billions in taxpayer assistance, today the House passed legislation (HR 1586) to hold companies, including American International Group (AIG), accountable for the bonuses that were paid to their executives. The bill will impose a new 90 percent tax on bonuses received by executives who worked at companies, such as American International Group (AIG), that received more than $5 billion in taxpayer assistance. After receiving more than $170 billion in taxpayer funds, AIG paid $165 million in retention payments to executives most of whom have mismanaged their company into near bankruptcy. The top recipient received more than $6.4 million and more than 73 of these executives were paid over $1 million in retention bonuses. After receiving their retention bonuses, at least eleven recipients left the company.

What they are doing is overlooking the needs of the workers of this country. Our committee has jurisdiction over trade adjustment and what's happened this week regarding Trade Adjustment Assistance is really incomprehensible and I think disgraceful. This Congress is going to leave town tomorrow. On Saturday the extension of TAA expires -- the 2009 extension. And what's going to happen: tens of thousands of people laid off because of trade will no longer be able to be certified. Tens of thousands. They will be out of luck when they hit bad luck through no fault of their own.

SHEVIN (United States Supreme Court), 407 US 67 (1972) VIDEO: This brief video features Laura Emerson as Margarita Fuentes and Prof. Robert Emerson as a Dade County police officer. Margarita Fuentes was a consumer who financed appliances and a service contract from Firestone Tire and Rubber Company. The agreement required monthly payments for the appliance principle plus interest, in addition to a service contract for appliance maintenance. FACTS: Margarita Fuentes purchased a gas stove and a record player from the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company (Firestone) in Florida. She bought both items subject to respective conditional sales contracts that specified monthly payment installments over time. The total cost of the two items, including an additional financing charge in agreement with these contracts, was roughly $600. Firestone retained title to the merchandise under the contract, but Mrs. Fuentes was entitled to possession unless and until she defaulted on the agreed payments. Mrs. Fuentes made timely installment payments for over a year until a dispute arose with Firestone over servicing of the stove she had purchased. Firestone responded by instituting a small claims suit requesting repossession of the items, reasoning that Mrs. Fuentes refused to make her remaining payments. Under Florida statutory law, Firestone only had to take two steps to start a repossession claim: (1) Complete and submit the appropriate forms to the court's clerk; (2) Post a ...
