  • Reconsidering Relevance Google Tech Talks January 7, 2009 ABSTRACT We've become complacent about relevance. The overwhelming success of web search engines has lulled even information retrieval (IR) researchers to expect only incremental improvements in relevance in the near future. And beyond web search, there are still broad search problems where relevance still feels hopelessly like the pre-Google web. But even some of the most basic IR questions about relevance are unresolved. We take for granted the very idea that a computer can determine which documents are relevant to a person's needs. And we still rely on two-word queries (on average) to communicate a user's information need. But this approach is a contrivance; in reality, we need to think of information-seeking as a problem of optimizing the communication between people and machines. We can do better. In fact, there are a variety of ongoing efforts to do so, often under the banners of "interactive information retrieval", "exploratory search", and "human computer information retrieval". In this talk, I'll discuss these initiatives and how they are helping to move "relevance" beyond today's outdated assumptions. Speaker: Daniel Tunkelang Daniel Tunkelang is co-founder and Chief Scientist at Endeca, a leading provider of enterprise information access solutions. He leads Endeca's efforts to develop features and capabilities that emphasize user interaction. Daniel has spearheaded the annual Workshops on Human Computer Information Retrieval ...

I am pretty random throughout the video and some of this (note SOME not all) is because my friend was sitting next to me play Call of Duty: World at War (ugh), he was talking to me and asked me some questions that is why I said the year the game came out and talked about Gungan orgies (sorry about that one)... Hopefully the description actually works this time. Anyway enjoy!

His research focuses on climate and climate change in the geological past. In this short interview Appy Sluijs explains about Open Access journals that have an open reviewing system. Readers can comment on the first version of a paper and with this, the authors can improve the paper for final publication. Appy Sluijs is member of the European Geosciences Union, of which all journals are published Open Access. He talks about the grant he received from the European Research Council, and his obligation to publish Open Access and deposit his data. In his view Open Access is very important, since his publications have very often local relevance. 'I think Open Access is a very good thing, because it provides the opportunity for everybody on the entire world to look at scientific publications for free.' For a project financed by the European Research Council Appy Sluijs also has to publish his data online. He believes that this is the only way to transparency and reuse of science. It's something that researchers should want themselves instead of having to be forced to do this by the ERC. http http

  • 7/9 Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975) From its opening multi-language titles (that sure looks like Swedish) to the closing arrest of the entire Dark Ages cast by modern-day bobbies, Monty Python and the Holy Grail helped to define "irreverence" and became an instant cult classic. This time the Pythonites savage the legend of King Arthur, juxtaposing some excellently selected exterior locations with an unending stream of anachronistic one-liners, non sequiturs, and slapstick set pieces. The Knights of the Round Table set off in search of the Holy Grail on foot, as their lackeys make clippety-clop sounds with coconut shells. A plague-ridden community, ringing with the cry of "bring out your dead," offers its hale and hearty citizens to the body piles. A wedding of convenience is attacked by Arthur's minions while the pasty-faced groom continually attempts to burst into song. The good guys are nearly thwarted by the dreaded, tree-shaped "Knights Who Say Ni!" A feisty enemy warrior, bloodily shorn of his arms and legs in the thick of battle, threatens to bite off his opponent's kneecap. A French military officer shouts such taunts as "I fart in your general direction" and "I wave my private parts at your aunties." Rabbits are a particular obsession of the writers this time around, ranging from the huge Trojan Rabbit to the "killer bunny" that decapitates one of the knights.Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin collaborated on the script and assumed most of the ...
